The Service for the Lord’s Day Fifth Sunday in Lent

April 7, 2019 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Gluten free wafers are available in the narthex and Jane Bell Gathering Space.

Greeting One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. One: Let us prepare for worship.

Karl Zinsmeister

Please note: On April 14 & April 21 worship times will be 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.

Preparation for Worship

Everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness keep us from doing it; that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prelude - Ruhig bewegt from Sonate II

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)

Christian Welcome and Announcements

Please pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor and include all requested information.

Call to Worship from Psalm 126 One: Let it be said among those who believe, “The Lord has done great things.” All: The Lord has done great things! One: Even in mystery, God is goodness, fullness, and righteousness. All: May those who sow tears, reap shouts of joy. One: This is a day that the Lord has made, a day for fellowship, praise, and prayer. Let us worship God, the Creator, Sustainer, and Savior of our lives. *Hymn 171 - A Sower Came from Ancient Hills stanzas 1 & 2, choir; stanzas 3 & 4 all

SEACHRIST

*Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and others in thought, word, and deed. We have done wrong things. We have left right things undone. The more we sin, the farther we fall away from you. Sometimes we think that our work is complete, save us from this error. Help us remember that the kingdom building work of your church and its people is not complete until the Savior reigns and grace abounds for every man, woman, and child. Help us remember Jesus, his powerful call and his singular death. Forgive our sin, in the name of our Savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen.

Many Sundays we begin worship with the words of a Psalm. In this we remember the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” Thus we begin worship with eternal words leading us forward.

Related to the spirit of Psalm 126 and the parable of the sower, this modern hymn reminds us that Jesus was a sower. He planted seeds to bear fruit in the world. What fruit have we each been called to bear?

WE PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD Old Testament Lesson - Genesis 2:1-4

pew Bible, p. 2

New Testament Lesson - John 19:28-30 Today we continue our preaching series on the “Seven Last Words of Jesus.” These texts are both about completion -- the completion of creation and the completion of the crucifixion. How do we know when God’s work is finished? How do we know when God’s work is a call to continuation?

At White Memorial we have an “open table,” meaning that whatever your worship tradition or church relationship, you are welcome to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. Here we welcome all who are baptized and who trust in God through Jesus Christ.

pew Bible, p. 107

(11:00) A Time with Young Disciples

Following our time together, four-year-olds through first graders will meet Livia Colvin at the door near the baptismal font, to be joined by Liisa Ogburn from the OnPoint service, for Worship Enrichment in L201.

8:15 & 11:00 - Communion will be served in the pews. Please hold each element until invited to partake together. As you pass the elements, remember that by the grace of God, Christ calls us and equips each of us to minister to one other. 9:30 - Communion will be served by intinction. The elders will stand at the four corners of the Sanctuary. Ushers will direct you from the side aisles to the station nearest you to receive the elements. Return to your pew by way of the center aisle. Those seated in the balcony and chancel will begin. Any who cannot come forward will be served in the pew.

REMEMBER ME

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Anthem (8:15) Ave Verum (Jesus, Word of God Incarnate)

Edward Elgar (1857-1934)

(Sung in Latin) Jesus, word of God incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born, on the cross for us thy body suffered pain and cruel scorn. By the blood and water cleanse us, flowing from thy pierced side; with thy broken body feed us, when in death we must abide. O sweetest, O kindest, O Jesus, son of Mary, O hear us.

Andrew Lloyd Webber (b. 1948)

(Sung in Latin) Merciful Jesus, Father, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, Father, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest everlasting.

Anne Lafferty, soprano; John Thagard, Roman Mock; trebles

*All who are able may stand.

*Hymn 220 - Go to Dark Gethsemane

(11:00) Annual Meeting of the Congregation

Join us after the 11 a.m. service in the Sanctuary for our Annual Congregational Meeting. The purposes of the meeting are: the election of new church officers, the election as the next Churchwide Nominating Committee, the approval of pastor terms of call and the presentation of the 2018 Annual Report.

*Charge and Benediction

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

(9:30 & 11:00) Pie Jesu from Requiem

The past few weeks we have been using words from the PCUSA Study Catechism for our affirmations of faith. Catechisms are teaching tools in question and answer form. They help us learn the faith of the church as they teach us about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. They are wonderful tools. If you want to read or study the catechism, it easily can be found via the internet by searching for “Presbyterian Church (USA) The Study Catechism.”

WE GO IN GOD’S NAME

Music During Distribution Hymn 227 - Jesus, Remember Me

From “Cross Shattered Christ” by Rick Beerhorst The inscription INRI stands for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” in Latin.

*Affirmation of Faith from PCUSA Study Catechism One: If God’s love is so powerful, why is there evil in the world? All: No one can say why, for evil is a terrible mystery. Still, we know that God’s triumph over evil is certain. Our Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, is himself God’s promise that suffering will come to an end, that death shall be no more, and that all things will be made new. One: What do we believe when we confess our faith in Jesus Christ as “God’s only Son”? All: No one else will ever be God incarnate. No one else will ever die for the sins of the world. Only Jesus Christ is such a person, only he could do such a work, and he in fact has done it. One: What do we affirm when we say that Jesus was “crucified, dead and buried”? All: From Christ’s lonely and terrible death we learn that there is no sorrow he has not known, no grief he has not borne, and no price he was unwilling to pay in order to reconcile us to God.

This hymn mentions Gethsemane. Gethsemane is an ancient garden of olive trees so sacred that it is still preserved today. Just outside of the gates of Jerusalem, the gospels tell us that Jesus prayed in Gethsemane through the night immediately before his arrest. This 19th century hymn is haunting and points our worship towards Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ death, itself.

*Chiming of the Trinity

The worship service ends with the Chiming of the Trinity. Please be mindful of those who remain to listen to the postlude.

*Postlude - Little Prelude in g minor

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) ***

While you will notice differences in music, location and worship leadership among our different services, what unites us in our worship is our liturgy. All services use the same Call to Worship, Prayer of Confession, readings from Scripture and Affirmation of Faith. Over the course of the next several weeks, the water lines to the new building will connect to those under Colonial Road. Access to the Colonial parking lot will be from St. Mary’s Street. McDonald Lane will be accessible, but under construction. Be aware that the traffic pattern may change from day to day until this phase of our construction is complete. Thank you for your patience and assistance as we make progress on our new facility and renovations.

Jim Ferry

*Assurance of Pardon *Passing of the Peace
