“ The Bears have a pretty experienced group this year. We have 23 Seniors and the majority of those guys have significant roles. That group specifically sets the tone for everything we do. The key to the success of our program this season is the mindset and preparation habits they bring to the table. They have been working extremely hard this summer. This is a great group of guys that play and prepare with a lot of passion, and they are very fun to coach. Two young guys in particular have been battling to get into the mix: Sophomore Wide Receiver Saylor Clark and Sophomore Cornerback Ricky McCleary. Both of those guys really impressed us during the spring. Every year we hope that we can stay injury free. Our expectations never change - we expect to compete at the highest level every single week. The biggest gg effect our schedule changes g have is that we have a lot less travel. We are excited to be ab able to play a few of the new teams coming com into our ou distict, as well as baack a few non-district n bringing back old rivalries. I think inn coaching you learn something aboout your team tea all the time. With new about ticular grou this part particular group, they are going to play with relentless reelentless effort eff for four quarters. Last year, y we saw the fight that our kidss had every week regardless of ouur opponent, opponent and that’s exactly the our a this program is built on. ” attitude

“ The Raiders will have several key players for 2017: Romeo Wykle (SS/WR), Chase Oliver (OLB), Caleb Flickner (DE), Logan Strickland (ILB), Treasure Johnson (Corner), Logan Stutzman (DB), Victor Dodd (DL), Kevin Martinez (OT), Wilson Benefield (Corner), Alex Williams (TE/DL), Keegan Jones (RB), Micaleous Elder (RB/Slot), Alex Higgins (OG), and Jackson Moore (QB/Hback). Jordan Hickey could have a breakout season because of a positive change in attitude. He has great skills and size with speed. He can play Running Back, Wide Receiver and Defensive Back, but as of now his focus is Running Back to allow us to split Micaleous or Keegan out at slot some.

C L E V E L A N D

Kellye Cawood at Quarterback could also al have a breakout season. He moved to South Pitt after the th freshman season at Cleveland, but he has moved back now. n He has a live arm and is aaccurate. Our te eam’s stre team’s strengths are speed obvio ously. Our biggest concerns obviously. are the t depth on defensive line. Offe ensive line doesn’t have much Offensive but Defensive Line is thin. On ou ur schedul our schedule this year, I think our toug toughest hest oppo opponent in our region will be Maryv ville. They are always very Maryville. fundamental and tough tough. ”

“ The 2017 Mustang football team will have a lot of new faces this year and some returning players playing in new positions. How good this season is will depend on how quickly they pick up on their positions. Kolten Gibson returns to QB this year after being named Region 3 5-A Player of the Year. He threw for 3,000 yards plus ran for around another 1,000 yards. Zeke Wesfield should see a lot of work at WR along with Luke Wallace who took a year off as a sopho sophomore. They will be joined by Brock Gibson who has been part of the Mustang Basketball Team, but not a member of the football team until this yyear. Kole Ha sp and Hallll had a real good spring expeected to be the starting start RB. At is expected thee FB position, Sam CClements and Cody Duggan will share that spot along with playing onn the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers will be replacing the majority of their experience. We lost 23 seniors off last year’s team, and most of them were our main contributors. There is a large learning curve. Some of the key players this year will be Hunter Powers (QB). He was last year’s starting quarterback, and he has been a good leader this off season. Also, Will Guy (LB) played a lot of ball for us, and he is also another good leader. Some talented young players coming to the team this year are Nate Austin (WR/DB) because is is a good, all-around athlete, and he looks to get the ball in his hands as often as possible. Also, Jordan Ledford (RB/LB) is a good athlete that loosk to get a good bit of playing time on both sides of the ball. The expectation for this year is to be competitive in all our games and be in the hunt for a playoff spot at the end of the season. We havee moved back to our traditional region and have have dropped a couple of tough non-conferencee games in Rhea and Notre Dame, so wee are more in line with what a rural rurral 3A school should be playing. ”

“ The Cherokees will have several key players this year. Martin Pierce (61) is our best player. He will have to anchor the defensive line after graduating four starters on a 4-man-front. Our most experience players are linebackers Will Wright, Austin Arnett and Tabre Abernathy. They were all starters a year ago. With sophomore Jalen Sharpe backing up Wright, and Dakota Moses behind Arnett, it is the deepest position too. Secondary is similar to the defensive line, all four starters have moved on from last year’s team. Senior Andre Smith will have to be great at his position to give others time to catch up. Offensive line and running backs should be our deepest and most experienced positions on offense. It is a plus to have four offensive starters returning to the line and fivee se seniors o s playing p ay g that position. Also, Tabre Abernathy, Ezra Markle, Jalen Sharpe, S Cam Johnson, Noah Brown and Jale Jalen H Hunt earning playing time should make runningg ba backs a deep position.

Miix 104.1 Mix M 104.1 ‘Southeast Tennessee High h School Sch Football’ highlights outstanding players from the past decade h

When one ruminates about the South in these beloved United States of America, images are conjured immediately of sweet tea, Sunday church, backyard grills, yes ma’ams and no ma’ams, and yes sirs and no sirs. Y’alls and thank you’s are everywhere. But right around the time that calendar clicks over to August there is something else ubiquitous in the air: The cracking of football pads. This year is no different in Southeast Tennessee, and the air of expectation for our young athletes and favorite schools is starting to heat up like an August day on the Ocoee River. As we celebrate ten wonderful years of covering local football action, here is a look back at some of the athletes who have made their mark.

American Bowl that helped to lead the East to a 17-14 win at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Sanders played a big role in the East’s 41-20 victory in the East-West All-Star Classic. Entering his senior year at UT, he plays primarily as Tennessee’s punt protector. Sanders is the son of Marc and Jennifer Sanders. He is majoring in Psychology. He was a recipient of the Wade & Virginia Travis Athletic Scholarship Endowment and a recipient of the Forrest L. Preston Athletic Scholarship.

W. Michael Lawson Jr. is a Co-Host for The Sports Drive/101.3 FM The Buzz, the Editor/Sr. Columnist for ATL All Day/ Fansided Inc., and a columnist for The Chattanoogan.

James Stovall played for the Bradley Central Bears under Head Coach Damon Floyd. During his high school career, he was two time 6A all-state selection. He made 47 catches for 681 yards as a senior. He led the Bears to their second straight playoff appearance. Stovall was a member of the Chattanooga Times Free Press Dynamite Dozen. “Stovall and Sanders are two of the best that ever played here at Bradley. They are everything that we want our program to represent. They took care of business in the classroom and were very hardworking, dedicated teammates that we loved to coach,” said Coach Damon Floyd. As a junior in high school, Stovall made 76 receptions for 1,085 yards and nine TDs. He set a state playoff record in 2010 with 19 receptions for 181 yards in a loss to Oak Ridge. Stovall also set numerous school and meet records in the triple jump and won the 2012 TSSAA state title. He was the 2012 Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps Track & Field team. Stovall enters his senior year playing for the UT Chattanooga Mocs. He has played in 31 games with 22 starts. He was preseason first team All-SoCon. James is the son of Michael and Fana Stovall. He is a Business major. He made the Dean’s List his freshman year, and he made the A.D. Honor Roll last fall.

“ Some of our key players for the Golden Eagles well be: Doug White (DB), Ty Goodwin (OL), Christian Simon (RB), Jay Graham (DB), Jaden Austin (WR), Zach Pemberton (QB), and Chandler Kaylor (LB). Doug is one of our more versatile defenders, which makes him a key player. The biggest attribute Doug has is the “neverquit” environment that he creates around his teammates by how he hustles day in day out. Ty will be one of our anchors on the Offensive Line this year. With a lot of playing time over the past few years, Ty will be looked at to be one of our leaders for this year’s team. Christian was one of our leading rushers on last year’s team. Jay is one of our vocal leaders. The way Jay approaches every day makes everyone around him better. Jaden has had a big impact on his teammates. Jaden shows his teammates how to work hard and good things will happen. Zack leads by example; he come in everyday does his job, works hard, and displays consistency in all aspects of being a team leader. Chandler is always encouraging but demands excellence every eve day, every practice, every rep. Chandler not only demands that th from his teammates but demands d it from fro himself.

R H E A C O U N T Y

Our schedule will show our team that every day counts. It will show that every ev learned rep counts. We learne ed last year that th no matter what comes c our way wa -- positive or neg gative -- during durin negative the course of a sseason, we have ha to keep working to our goals and finish! We will build build on all our positive aspect aspects ts of last year year, learn from an and nd forget our negative as spects, and keep ke aspects, working ttowards our team te goals. ”

Beecher’s Bleacher

A Hug from Sweetness by Beecher Hunter alter Payton was one of the greatest running backs ever to play football. He spent his entire professional career with the Chicago Bears. He was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Hall of Fame NFL player and coach Mike Ditka described Payton as the greatest football player he had ever seen - but even greater as a human being. His heart and compassion are described in a story by Christy Gutowski, titled “Payton’s Was a Shoulder to Cry On,” published in the Daily Herald. “After 10 seasons as a placekicker with the Bears, Bob Thomas was notified by the management that he was being cut. Thomas, a Christian, waited until he knew the locker room would be emptied of players to clear out his things. He didn’t have the emotional strength to face the players he had grown to love. His celebrated teammate, Payton, another believer, learned about Thomas’ termination and waited alone at the kicker’s locker.

When Thomas saw Payton, he buried his face in the running back’s chest and allowed his friend to comfort him. After Payton’s death in 1999, Thomas recalled that emotional moment in the locker room: ‘To share your grief with a Hall of Fame running back with that kind of compassion, empathy and ability is really my fondest memory of the guy we called Sweetness,’ he said.” What about you today? Is there a teammate, classmate, family member or someone you may not even know very well who is going through a tough time and who needs a shoulder to cry on? Someone you can comfort and encourage? That’s a tender moment with great healing power. Walter Payton and kicker Bob Thomas were teammates in Chicago. Thomas is now an Illinois Supreme Court justice.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Beecher Hunter is president of Life Care Centers of America and a former editor of The Cleveland Daily Banner. In his first newspaper job with the Cookeville Herald Citizen, he wrote a sports column called “Beecher’s Bleacher.” That title is resurrected for this article.)

Where Are They Now? BRADLEY CENTRAL As a follow-up to last year’s “Where Are They Now?” and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this magazine, this year we’ll feature a few of the most well-known and beloved football players in the 100-year history of Bradley Central. The great stories of these featured players are excerpts from the book, “One Hundred Seasons of Black and Gold Glory,” by Gary Ownbey. The 360-plus page hardback book can be purchased for $30.00 at the Bradley County Trustee Office of Mike Smith, The Town Squire, WCLE MIX 104.1, at BCHS home fooball games or from the author. Contact Mr. Ownbey via email at [email protected]. All proceeds from the sale of the book go directly to the Bear football program.

Jimmie Lovell

Head Coach 1917-1938 Also served as Athletic Director and Head Coach Boys’ Basketball and Baseball during his tenure

Coach Lovell came to “Central High School,” as the school was first named, when it opened in 1916. He was a very recent graduate at the time of his beloved University of Tennessee where he was a four-sport letterman in football, baseball, basketball and track. He still holds the coaching record for longevity (21 seasons) and most wins (123). Bradley Central’s playing surface was designated as Jimmie Lovell Field in 1940 and retains that name today. Coach Lovell retired to his home town of Mount Pleasant, TN, to farm which was his true love. He returned for the field dedication in 1940 and again in 1969. He was scheduled to return for a dedication ceremony as the Bears opened the 1974 season in the new Bear Stadium. Unfortunately, he passed away just four days prior to that ceremony.

#14 Steve Sloan

Quarterback and Defensive Back

Perhaps the most recognizable name in the rich tradition of Bradley Central sports was the m multi-talented Steve Sloan. Sloan helped lead the Bears to their first football state championship in 1961 and also led the basketball Bears to their third state title during the same school year in the winter of 1962. He also lettered in baseball and golf at Bradley Central. He was named All-State in football and basketball and signed to play college football with Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama. At B Bama, Sl Sloan led l d the th Crimson Ci Tide Tid to back-to-back national championships in his junior and senior seasons. He replaced a suspended Joe Namath in his sophomore season and led the Tide to a 12-7 upset of Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. The opportunity in his junior year came about when starting quarterback Namath was injured and the Tide, with Sloan at quarterback, finished unbeaten during the regular season. They were named National Champions even though they lost to Texas 21-17, in the Orange Bowl. At that time the national champion was named before the bowl games were played. Sloan became noted later as a “player’s” coach that restored moribund programs to a higher level when he coached at Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Ole Miss and Duke. At Duke he was followed by another Tennessean, Steve Spurrier. He wound down his working career as the Athletic Director at Alabama, North Texas, Central Florida and finally at UTC before retiring. He currently resides in Orlando, FL, with his wife Brenda.

#69 John ‘Rex’ Dockery

Offensive Lineman

The Dockery family, beginning with father John “Red” Dockery (BCHS class of 1938) became synonymous with success at Bradley Central. Red was a standout, multi-sport athlete and was the father to Pam Dockery Mull and John “Rex” Dockery. 48

John ‘Red’ Dockery w ith son ‘Rex’ Dockery

After a standout career as a Bear, including the unbeaten 1959 Bears, which some proclaim to be possibly the best in Bear history, Rex played for the UT Vols. After graduation in 1965 he coached at Harriman and Morristown East where he led the Hurricanes to the 1969 AAA State Championship. He followed his good friend, Steve Sloan, to Georgia Tech as an assistant coach and later moved to Vandy with Sloan. He moved with Sloan to Texas Tech and became head coach when Sloan left for Ole Miss. Dockery was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1977 and after three seasons at TTU moved to Memphis State University (now known as Memphis University). He was tragically killed in a plane crash along with three others when they were caught in a violent storm on their way to Lawrenceburg, TN, on December 12, 1983. He was to be the keynote speaker at a banquet honoring the Tennessee High School Player of the Year.

#54 Marvin ‘Dale’ Jones

Outside Linebacker

Want to send a chill down the spines of Bradley Central and Tennessee fans? Just mention the name of Dale Jones and you’re sure to hear many stories about the drive and desire that Jones exuded as an “under-sized” player to fight his way to become a legend for the Big Orange. After being named All-State twice as outside linebacker for the Bears, Jones would see his dream of playing for Tennessee put on hold. He wasn’t “big enough” at 185 lbs. to play defense in the rugged SEC according to the coaches. After spending a season at TMI in Sweetwater and doing everything a person could do to gain weight, he was rewarded with a chance to run through the “T” in Neyland Stadium. And he took advantage of that opportunity to become an All-American and was quickly known for numerous “big hits” during his career in Knoxville. His most acclaimed play came in 1986 against Alabama. With the Vols clinging to a shaky 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter, Jones tipped Bama QB Mike Shula’s pass and pulled it in for an interception as he fell to the ground sealing a Big Orange victory. He will also be forever remembered for the 1986 Sugar Bowl rout of the high-flying Miami Hurricanes. Behind QB Vinny Testaverde, the ‘Canes were one win away from being proclaimed National Champions with only Tennessee standing in the way. Alongside All-American teammate, Chris White, another former Bear, Jones led the devastating defense in a 35-7 humiliation of Miami. He has been a defensive coach at Appalachian State in Boone, NC, for 21 seasons where he has coached 17 All-Americans and 35 All-Southern Conference players.

#69 Bob Johnson

Center

The four Johnson brothers left an indelible mark in Tennessee football history and it all started right here at Bradley Central High School. The brothers, Bill, Bob, Tom and Paul (Cleveland High), would conclude their high school careers by signing with the Big Orange. The most successful, football-wise, was the second brother, Bob, who garnered All-State honors at Bradley Central before enrolling at UT on a football scholarship with Coach Doug Dickey. He was named an All-American for the Big Orange and also named the Jacobs Award winner for the best blocker in the SEC and was named All-Southeastern Conference in 1966 and 1967. Johnson also, remarkably, finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting which is almost unheard of today.
