Camp SOS Island Elective FAQs What is expected of teachers? Teachers need to have a written lesson plan, make a list of supplies (if needed), and teach an elective or run an activity for an hour and fifteen minutes. Your class can be just for fun, i.e. games, water fun, etc., or it can be a skill you want to teach, i.e. fishing, knitting, cooking, jewelry making, etc.

What is a lesson plan? A lesson plan is a basic guide of what will be taught in the elective each day. We provide an easy-to-fill-out form that will be turned back in when completed. Your lesson plan will include a list of supplies, any room preferences, etc., that you will need for your class. It does not need to be anything fancy, just something to get your mind working and that we can use as a description for our brochure. This is also important info in case you are unavailable to teach one day.

What is my budget? It is impossible to pre-plan a budget for each class. Some, like swimming, need hardly any supplies. Others, like cooking, require LOTS of supplies.

Who do I talk to if I need supplies? Teachers will gather their class supplies as follows: 1. Take your list of supplies and check in the Trinity Kids Resource Room for items in stock. 2. Prepare a list of additional supplies that will need to be purchased and get your list approved by Cindy or Terry, BEFORE you purchase them. All purchases must be approved by Trinity Kids in advance to be reimbursable. 3. Save all your receipts and submit to the Trinity Kids Office with a “Request for Reimbursement” form (from Cindy or Terry) no later than the last day of camp. Also keep in mind that the Trinity Kids Office may be able to order certain items more cheaply than one can buy in a store. You may want to order through Trinity Kids to get the best deal and resources. Please try to limit supplies to what is necessary. We have many classes that need supplies. Discuss your list with Terry/Cindy if you are uncertain about this process.

How many kids will be in my class? This depends on interest in an elective. It can be up to the discretion of the teacher to limit the size of the class based on the elective being taught, but do keep in mind the needs of Camp SOS Island. Many kids are signing up for electives and we would like to offer classes to a minimum of 12 kids per elective. Activities that are taught outside, such as active electives, tend to be larger in number (15+ kids).

What if I feel overwhelmed with my class size? Please note that you will be given counselors, based on the needs of your elective, to help you each day. We will always take safety into consideration when we assign counselors to an elective. You can also find an approved co-teacher to help you lead your elective. We want you to enjoy your time with the kids and not be overwhelmed.

What if I have left over time in my class and have nothing to do? By drawing up a lesson plan, you should be able to see where the holes are in your day. For the unplanned extra time, come up with a few back up plans of extra activities. You can have a side project that pertains to the elective, or for the younger kids, you could have coloring pages, games, etc. Be creative! For specific ideas, discuss your elective with Terry or Cindy.

What if I have a child that is not camp age? We provide childcare for children that are kindergarten and under, subject to availability and provided you submit a childcare application. Sixth grade is Camp Trinity Kids “gap year.” If you are teaching an elective, your sixth grader may help in your class during your class time, subject to approval from Camp SOS Island Director, Kim Simons.

What is the closing program? The Camp SOS Island closing program is attended by staff, campers, and their families. This program gives campers the opportunity to perform or display what they have been doing all week in their electives. If your class is participating, you need to be the one to organize their participation. If your class is not participating, you do not have to attend, but it is encouraged. It is your final time during the camp week to connect with your class, meet parents, and see what the other electives have been doing all week.

If you are involved in an elective that is performance-based, please note that campers love to perform the final product for friends and family. Due to time constraints, we must limit amount of time and sometimes need to decide which classes are able to participate live, on stage. Camp Administration has the right to approve or disapprove performances.
