PASSING ON THE GIFT CAMPAIGN

®

Nearly 805 million people around the world don’t have enough food to eat—more than the combined populations of Canada, the United States and the European Union. Though extreme poverty has been cut in half since 1990—encouraging progress, for certain—one in eight people still go to bed hungry every night. Out of this population, 98 percent live in developing countries. In our more than 70-year history, Heifer International has addressed this problem by helping more than 22.6 million farming families build sustainable livelihoods.

OUR MISSION:

TO WORK WITH COMMUNITIES TO END WORLD HUNGER AND POVERTY AND TO CARE FOR THE EARTH. www.heifercanada.org

In some places, 22 generations of Heifer animals can be traced. On average, Passing on the Gift® lasts for at least nine generations, no matter the project.

A PROVEN HISTORY Heifer’s work started during the Spanish Civil War. As relief worker Dan West ladled rations of powdered milk to refugees, he realized that this simple form of aid would never be enough. Five years later, West—a farmer and member of the Church of the Brethren—formed an organization dedicated to ending hunger permanently. In June of 1944, the first shipment of dairy cattle left the United States bound for Puerto Rico in what would become a campaign that would change the lives of millions. Today, we continue to empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity. We work with smallholder farmers, many of them women, and their communities, by providing them with the right tools, training and livestock. The animals provide these families with both food and reliable income through agricultural www.heifercanada.org

products such as milk, eggs, cheese, honey and wool that can be traded or sold at market.

Dan West, founder of Heifer International

It means more mothers and fathers are able to feed their children and that those children are healthy and able to go to school. It means that where once, whole communities were living in poverty— lacking adequate nutrition, income and resources—those communities now have strong and successful economies. At the heart of our model is Passing on the Gift, which stipulates families share training they receive and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This concept of “paying it forward” helps build participation in each project, enables each community to become self-sufficient and ensures the positive impact of the gift is felt for generations.

For the last four years, Heifer International has been one of the top four international aid non-profit brands according to the Equitrend® Rankings from Harris Interactive, a leading U.S. market research firm.

12 CORNERSTONES Heifer International projects are built around the 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development. These 12 principles serve as the foundation that guides families and whole communities into lives of selfreliance. These mainstays of community development stimulate group wisdom and personal insights and keep hearts, minds and actions balanced, focused and productive.

PASSING ON THE GIFT

GENDER AND FAMILY FOCUS

The nature of our work allows families to become the cycle of positive change; those who received Heifer gifts become donors and pass on the possibilities.

Women and men are encouraged to share in decision making as well as in the benefits the animals and training bring.

ACCOUNTABILITY We are responsible to the communities we serve.

SHARING AND CARING

GENUINE NEED AND JUSTICE Those most in need are given priority in receiving animals and training.

IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENT

We can solve the world’s problems if everyone commits to sharing resources and caring for others.

Sustainable farming techniques, reforestation and tree-saving fuel alternatives are important components in all of our projects.

SUSTAINABILITY AND SELF-RELIANCE

FULL PARTICIPATION

The families we work with strive for sustainable, self-reliant lives so that they will continue to thrive on their own.

Everyone is expected to work together to bring about community transformation.

IMPROVED ANIMAL MANAGEMENT Our farmers learn how to keep their animals safe, healthy and productive.

NUTRITION AND INCOME Farmers reap rewards from their gift animal through the consumption and/ or sale of products such as milk, eggs, meat, cheese, honey and wool. www.heifercanada.org

TRAINING AND EDUCATION Participants learn nuts-and-bolts skills such as how to build sturdy pens and grow fodder. They also receive in-depth training in all 12 Cornerstones.

SPIRITUALITY Our common belief lies in the value of all life, a sense of connectedness to the Earth and a shared vision of the future. 4

TOGETHER, WE HAVE POWER OVER HUNGER AND POVERTY Heifer International has committed to moving millions of families completely out of hunger and poverty and to an income level that allows them to feed themselves every month of the year, educate their children and have proper housing, water and hygiene. Heifer International Canada is joining the effort to end hunger and poverty worldwide while caring for the Earth. We work as a part of the Heifer International global network to provide livestock, trees, seeds and training in environmentally sound agriculture to families in more than 30 countries. www.heifercanada.org

Heifer Canada launched the Passing on the Gift Campaign in 2015, and has committed to raising $1 million for three projects that focus on providing livestock and training to move 294,000 families out of poverty in communities in East Africa, Cambodia and Nepal. We believe all people deserve dignity, opportunity, and a future free from hunger. Together, we have power over hunger and poverty and we invite you to join in this journey to help transform the lives of these families.

Heifer International’s work is an example of best practices in development. They bring generations together with community building, and help families build knowledge and resources for sustainable progress out of poverty.” – Ford Foundation

EAST AFRICA DAIRY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Empowering Dairy Farmers in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda

Much of the economy of East Africa is based on the agriculture of smallholder farm families with few resources, and about half subsist on less than $1 a day. Women are responsible for 80 percent of food produced in Africa, but they frequently have the fewest resources and are particularly affected by poverty. However, opportunity exists for farmers and there is a growing demand for processed milk and dairy products in East Africa. The region is also home to half of the cattle in Africa. The East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project is designed to capitalize on these opportunities through work with smallholder farmers. In 2008, EADD, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, provided extensive training on dairy productivity, business practices and operation, and www.heifercanada.org

dairy product marketing to 179,000 farming families in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The project established 82 producer organizations and grew into a leader in market-oriented development initiatives in eastern Africa. Participating farmers have earned more than $131 million in milk sales. In some places, family incomes more than doubled. The second phase of EADD, with help from a $25.5 million grant from the Gates Foundation, will work with 136,000 farmers to improve dairy production and access to markets, continuing work in Kenya and Uganda and expanding into Tanzania. Through dairy cattle and access to training and business resources, women and their families can grow their farms, start new businesses and claim their own voice.

IMPROVING INCOME AND NUTRITION THROUGH COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT The Power of Poultry in Cambodia

About one-third of Cambodians suffer from hunger, and the country’s malnutrition rates are among the highest in Asia. Domestic violence, human trafficking and a lack of education prevent women from realizing their full potential. Through this project, farmers— especially women—will be transformed into powerful smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs selling meat and produce in organized markets. Poultry are a key component of the project’s plan because they serve as a quick source of protein, do not need to be refrigerated after slaughter, can be quickly sold at www.heifercanada.org

market for income, require low investment capital for feeding or housing, and require little upkeep that can be taxing on the family’s time and resources. They also regularly produce eggs, which are a good source of nutrition. Members of this project will be trained to provide agricultural and veterinary services to their communities at an affordable price, and the formation of cooperatives also will provide income-generating opportunities. This project will help us bring our work in Cambodia to exponentially more families than ever before in the country.

EMPOWERING WOMEN FARMERS Building a Path Out of Poverty for Nepal

Nepal is among the least developed countries in the world. Nearly one-third of Nepal’s population lives below the poverty line with more than 85 percent of the population living in rural areas, lacking access to food, water, shelter and clothing. The situation for many Nepali women feels particularly hopeless in the face of poverty, harsh conditions and the caste system. Heifer International is empowering 138,000 Nepali women and their families so they can attain dignity and self-reliance and break out of a life of hunger, poverty and hopelessness. www.heifercanada.org

For farmers—especially marginalized women—to thrive on small farms, they must work together, have higher-quality animals, be trained in better farming methods and be connected to formal agricultural markets. The project helps women realize their potential to succeed, transforming them into powerful smallholder farmers, livestock owners and businesswomen who can feed their families while helping create stronger communities throughout the country. The project specifically focuses on goat production for both meat and dairy.

HOW YOU CAN HELP The Passing on the Gift Campaign is an opportunity for you to help end hunger and poverty one family at a time. You have the power to give a smallholder farmer the resources and training it takes to feed their family; to give a young girl a chance at an education; to empower a woman to have a voice in her community. Our goal is to raise $1 million to help lift 294,000 families out of poverty and keep them out of poverty. Together, we can change the world, one family, one community, at a time. And it all starts with your support. Financial commitments can be made over three years, and all donations are eligible to receive an official charitable income tax receipt. www.heifercanada.org

You are encouraged to designate your donation to one of the three projects in the Passing on the Gift Campaign.
