CANY N Volume 1, Issue 3

Call

Official Publication of the Sunset Canyon Land Owner's Association

A Rolling Stone..... The new Sunset Canyon Board of Directors has really hit the ground running. In just 3 short months the recently elected board, all but two of whom are new, have created an astonishing list of achievements. One of the first actions of the new board has been to establish regularly scheduled monthly meetings to more efficiently serve the community. Among other actions taken or underway by the board include:

association By-Laws • Instituted online dues payment facility, and began an overhaul of the association website • Strengthened education efforts and e n f o rc e m e n t o f a s s o c i a t i o n d e e d restrictions • Established a regular, hired landscape maintenance program for our entrances

• Established several new committees to research issues and propose actions on a number of community concerns.

• Worked with business owners along Hidden Hills Dr. to correct unsightly conditions

• Launched a formal program to more aggressively collect dues. This includes mailing invoices and past due notices, especially to owners of "Nassour" lots, whose deed restrictions mandate membership in the association. Greater participation in SCLA membership will help avoid an increase in annual dues.

• Persuaded a refuse collection company to remove a dumpster positioned in the roadway right-of-way, and to keep emptied containers off the street

• Organized a successful Community Garage Sale • Organized a well-received children's Easter Egg Hunt • Began steps to obtain permanent easements for the Sunset Canyon Drive entrance signs (both signs sit on privately-owned property) • Initiated a revie w a n d p ro p o s e d consolidation/modernization of the Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

• Obtained membership approval and began steps to have our association legal structure reviewed by a competent attorney • Obtained membership approval to contract for liability insurance to protect the association and it's volunteers from legal action • Repaired potholes in streets Residents may contact the board by simply emailing: board@SunsetCanyon. org. Email sent to this single address will be automatically forwarded to each individual board member and committee chairperson.

“Look, that one’s pregnant.” No, not another! “What cute brown spots.” I’d drill the mother

And so it goes, on Oakwood Lane “Don’t be so mean.” They’re one big pain

They eat our plants. “They must be starving.” A venison steak I would be carving

Cannot agree It’s pain or pleasure They have no worth “Oh, what a treasure.”

Where will it end, this ceaseless feud “They’re lovely pets.” No, dear. They’re food

How Does Your Garden Grow… How about those tomatoes…

With the rapid progression from Spring to warmer weather, we hope you have managed to get a jump on your garden planting. Around the neighborhood, we observe a variety of garden plots, all shapes and sizes. One thing they all have in common is a nice high fence to keep out the deer. Beyond that, we see raised beds, low beds, squares

and rectangles. We see a wide assortment of vegetable choices, with the ubiquitous tomato plant enjoying first place as to frequency. Speaking of tomatoes, there are many varieties to select from, including choices by size, color, number of days to bloom, optimum season to plant (early or late), and so on. Growers all seem to be hyping their variety for its meatiness or flavor or other unique characteristic. Armed with little knowledge and less initiative, our choices seem to be dictated more by what is available than what might produce the best result. Thus, to you tomato aficionados, we would love for you to share your successes and war stories with our readers.

Unsolicited plug… A stone’s throw down the road, just east of Nutty Brown Rd on the north side of Hwy 290, you will find Geo Growers. We have heard numerous comments about how helpful they are in assisting homeowners to evaluate their soil and planting needs. They have a small but dedicated staff, and the owner is George Altgelt. George knows his dirt! www.geogrowers.net/

referred us to a product called SedgeHammer, so we bought some and spread it around, as directed, of course. We sure hope it works. Here is a link to the manufacturer’s website http://www.gowanco.com/ If you have a favorite gardening tip, our readers would love to hear it. Just pass it along to [email protected]

That pesky nutsedge… We have noticed an increase in the quantity of nutsedge in our yard this past month. Maybe you have too. Before it gets completely out of hand, we asked Russell Simpson of S & S Nativescapes what he would recommend to treat it. He

Canyon Call SAVE THE DATE! Stash the Gin,

Tequila is in…

No doubt many of you have enjoyed an occasional gin and tonic. In these parts, the increasing popularity of tequila and the emergence of our own home grown brands, spurs us to recommend one of our all-time favorite libations, Tequila and Tonic with Lime. It’s a simple formula, basically substituting your favorite tequila (not necessarily most expensive, but assuredly 100% agave) in place of gin.

The Stiletto Stampede for the Cure™ is back at the Hill Country Galleria, Saturday, October 16, 2010! Presented by IdealHeel™ and Dillard’s, the Stiletto Stampede for the Cure benefits the Susan G Komen Austin Affiliate. The Stiletto Stampede for the Cure is a high heel dash (100 yards) with a mission to encourage young women and men to know and understand the risks of breast cancer and empower them to prevent the disease by utilizing overall Breast Self-Awareness through early detection, screening methods and education. More information is available online at www.stilettostampede4thecure.org

Tips for a great taste experience include using lots of ice, a generous amount of lime (yes, do toss the squeezed lime into the glass) and a good tonic water. Our favorite is Diet Schweppe’s, which is not too sweet, and with a nice zing to it. So sit back, put your feet up on the nearest rock or rail, and soak up a great drink and a great sunset. Soon you will grow accustomed to hearing the phrase “Honey, how ‘bout one a them T & T’s!”

Not all had brave

husbands who provided for them and made the family living. Frontier women without the protection of a husband or parents were left to do whatever they could to survive. Many of the men who were outlaws have become legends with heroic stature. The women outlaws are not well known, but many had fascinating lives. These are not the pioneer women with the sunbonnets who organized our churches, but women who made up their own rules and did what they had to do to live in a tough and lonely world. Martha McLain will tell us the stories of these women. Marti’s family has ranched in Sutton Country, Texas for over 100 years. She is a graduate of the University of Texas, did her graduate work in American Studies at the University of Texas Permian Basin, and studied Spanish and archeology in Mexico City and Guadalajara. She has held various offices in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and was named a Honorary Regent for Life in the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is the author of Love Letter of the Old West and April 1, 1902, a columnist, play director (won Best Direction of a Drama award), and speaker.

Austin Currents

The Travis County Greenprint Report was published with little fanfare in 2006 and it contains a wealth of information about where we live and play. In partnership with the Trust for Public Land (TPL), the idea behind the Travis County Greenprint Report is that communities in Central Texas are growing rapidly and many find themselves behind the curve in terms of addressing the growing parks and recreational needs of the population. In Travis County and the City of Austin, cherished recreational areas and parks like Zilker Park and the Town Lake trail are very heavily used, while additional parks and recreational capacity are not being added at the same rate. Investment in maintenance has not kept pace with the needs and many recreational facilities are in severe disrepair. The report covers water quality, recreational opportunities, protection of rare / environmentally sensitive features, and protection of cultural resources, green space and land-use issues. The goal of a comprehensive Travis County Greenprint is to create a unified vision—led by the community with TPL’s help—that identifies the critical parks, recreation, and natural lands protection needs in the county. It is the goal of this effort to assist the City, the County, and the various parks and recreation and natural area conservation organizations to apply the limited resources available to this common vision. The Travis County Greenprint is aimed at helping the Central Texas community leverage available resources more effectively, resulting in a better parks, recreation, and natural areas system in the region. You can download the Travis County Greenprint Report here: http://www. tpl.org/content_documents/tx_travis_greenprint.pdf For more information contact Rich Keith [email protected] (512) 266-8498. - Submitted by Rich Keith

Canyon Call SUMMER HEAT CAUTIONS

Stay Safe This Summer

How dangerous is overheating in the summer months? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1973 – 2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. “Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat,” says Dr.George Luber, extreme heat expert for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Summertime activity, whether on the playing field, running, boating, or just enjoying the great outdoors, must be balanced with measures that aid the body’s cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related illness. Know the symptoms of heat disorders and overexposure to the sun, and be ready to give first aid treatment. Heat Cramps- are strong muscle contractions and usually affect the abdomen and legs. The condition usually improves with rest, water and cooler conditions. Heat Exhaustion- caused by heat and dehydration but the effects are more serious than cramps. Symptoms may include

paleness, dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, and an increase in body temperature. Rest, water and cool compresses (ice water on the back of the neck, etc) can help. For more sever heat exhaustion, IV fluids may be required. Heat Stroke- The most serious of the heat related conditions. Heat stroke is most commonly brought on by strenuous exercise in hot conditions. However, it can also affect non-active individuals if the temperature is high enough. Visual signs include flushed, red look to the skin, the person often stops sweating**. This is one key sign that an individual is in an over heated condition. Also, a person with heat stroke might become delirious, unconscious, or have seizures. Lowering the body temperature and getting fluids into the person as quickly as possible is imperative. Don’t get caught off guard this summer drink plenty of water, wear plenty of sun-screen, and exercise early in the morning. Enjoy the summer season and stay safe. - Submitted by Valerie Salinas
