National Night Out - 2010

National Night Out (NNO) events will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Most of the block parties will be from about 6-9 PM but this may vary. Some individual families are having parties and some parties consist of several neighbors getting together to have a party. Parties are both simple and elaborate. Meals are served at some parties and others have pot luck meals. Some homes have ice-cream parties. Others serve hot dogs and dessert. This is a great way to meet your new neighbors or to renew old friendships. Parties are usually held by streets or sections of streets. The usual number of families invited could be from 10 to 30 or more. Sunset Canyon ALWAYS has a great turnout for NNO. We usually have more NNO parties than any other neighborhood. We will have 14 or more parties held in all five sections of our neighborhood this year. We will try to arrange for the sheriff or fire department/EMS to make a visit to each party. Plan now to attend. If you get an invitation, please reply with a YES and attend your neighbor’s party. You will be glad you did. This is a nationwide event and it is planned to make you aware of local neighborhood programs such as crime watch and neighborhood watch. It is also a great way to get to know your closest neighbors. Help keep Sunset Canyon a great and safe place for our families to live. Next year YOU could volunteer to host a party in your area. We would like to have at least 20-25 parties in Sunset Canyon!! We should be able to host at least five or more parties per section. Let us know if you are interested by contacting a SCLA board member. If you need more information about this year’s events, here are the people to contact: Section 1 - Phil & Dorothee Auldridge 5170055 or [email protected]; Section 2 & 3 - Debbie Rothschild 476-2377; Section 4 - Kim Ort [email protected]; Section 5 Gary and Sandy Hale 858-5637 By the way: According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Department, we have one of the safest and most crime free neighborhoods in Hays County. We need to work to keep it that way. Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

October 2010

A word from SCLA President, Teresa Carbajal Ravet… Greetings Sunset Canyon Neighbors: I hope this finds you enjoying the lower temperatures and the bit of rain that we have experienced lately, I know my family has. Summer has been winding down and fall is slowly awakening. Before the year quickly comes to an end, I want to thank all the SCLA community volunteers for the work that has been done behind the scenes that are not necessarily noticed by the general community. These individual thanks are not in any particular order, all are equally appreciated and recognized. Thanks to Brooke Johnson for sharing the name of her gardener, José, with the association. If you haven’t noticed the north and south entrances to Sunset Canyon are being maintained on a regular basis, with José caring for the greenery and Infrastructure Committee Chair, Gary Hale, caring for lighting and irrigation. The SCLA has not forgotten about the west entrance and the issue is still on the agenda. Thanks to Phil Auldridge for taking it upon himself to fill in pot holes along Hidden Hills Drive. Gary Hale had put in several calls and work requests at the County office to no avail. It is nice and helpful to have neighbors assist our community when a need arises. Keep up the great volunteering! At the SCLA Google group I continuously observe neighbors helping each other out by posting lost or found pets, searches of missing bicycles, and general advice. Thanks to our neighbors the community is doing a great job on safety. Big thanks to those neighbors that will be opening up their homes for the National Night Out 2010. Scheduled for Tuesday, October 5th, NNO 2010 is the occasion to get out and meet your new neighbors, renew old friendships, and commit to maintaining the community one of the safest neighborhoods (Continued on Page 3) Sunset Canyon - October 2010

From the Editor-in-Chief…

There has been a lot of ballyhoo recently over the appearance of several new kids on the block, to wit, H.E.B., Walgreens, Home Depot, Chase Bank, McDonald’s, Broadway Bank, Whataburger, as well as several more “local” type businesses, among them Pioneer Bank, Flores Mexican Restaurant, a re-vitalized Hill Country Kitchen, the Koi Lantern and others. In spite of the departure of two hardware stores, as well as the seemingly inevitable turnover of many of our local eateries, the net influx of business into the Dripping Springs community has been nothing short of remarkable, especially against the backdrop of difficult economic times. One might question whether there has been a net gain to the community with all this growth, and I for one give that a resounding “Yes.” You can probably tick off the negatives, like maybe more traffic, a lot more asphalt and cement, fewer trees, the absence of more desirable architectural features. On the other hand, I’m guessing we all like very much not having to drive all the way to the Oak Hill Y or Brodie Lane and beyond for some of our home improvement, grocery and other purchases. On a more global front, the added sales tax revenue will be very good for our community, as well as additional jobs and yet another influx of new businesses as the satellite shops which are certainly to follow begin to appear. We should consider also the financial impetus this has provided in getting the city moving on wastewater disposal (every pun intended). One interesting element is that, for the most part, the new jobs created seem to have been filled by neighbors. Or if not yet neighbors, they are soon to be. Personally, it strengthens my sense of community knowing that the majority of the people I interact with at these new places of business live right around here, same as you and I. Makes it awfully easy to reach out with a big Texas “Howdy!” and know that when someone says “Have a great day!” they most likely really mean it. Until next time… John Hoag

Canyon Call From the SCLA President - (Continued from Cover Page) in Hays County. A list of section hosts will be posted on the SCLA Google group, however there is no obligation to keep within your section. Venturing out to other sections is welcomed. Lastly, the SCLA Events Committee is busy organizing a renewed Oktoberfest celebration. Slated with all new activities and performances, Oktoberfest 2010 will be the place to be on Saturday, October 23rd, from 11 AM to 3 PM. Community vendors will have their wares’ out for the start of your holiday shopping, along with local musicians, children’s activities, and best of all, hot BBQ plates with all the fixings. This is a community appreciation event for all the SCLA volunteers that have gone unidentified throughout the year but certainly recognized for their value. All Sunset Canyon neighbors are welcomed, current SCLA members are invited at no charge, non-members are invited and have the option to join the association with a $35.00 membership fee per household or the option to pay for the BBQ lunch & drink at $13.95/plate. A last personal thank you to the Board Officers, the Committee Chairs, and the newsletter editor, for having volunteered a huge amount of talent, energy, and time in order to strengthen the association. Community work continues and volunteers are always needed and welcomed!

The Junk Drawer

Most never think about it, though it’s there for all to see. A part of every well run home. You bet. A certainty. I’m referring to your Junk Drawer, filled with bits of this and that. Set aside quite carefully, so you’ll know just where it’s at. There are thing-a-ma-jigs and what-nots in this chaotic space. Waiting patiently to take their turn, if needed, “…just in case.” A stranger might say “What a mess of useless junk, I swear.” But just you wait ‘til something’s broken. To fix it, look in there. It doesn’t matter that half this stuff has seen much better days. These odds and ends, this Junk Drawer stew, a pack-rat’s scrambled maze. From broken-pointed scissors to batteries out of date, Could you get along without it? Now don’t go tempting fate. - John Hoag

As always, Teresa

Canyon Call NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S RECESSION… We have all been affected one way or another by the downturn in the economy. This ranges from being slightly inconvenienced to more-than-slightly unemployed. Our roving reporter was at yet another neighborhood gathering recently and wound up in the midst of a lively discussion about alternatives to the bread line when one gets the proverbial axe, you know, the sack, the old heave ho. First, it seems one has to put aside those feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy, bruised ego and all, and turn that near empty glass into one that is at least half full. One such story emerged, that of one of our neighbors, Steve Harrington. It seems Steve has been employed for some years in high tech industry, having built an impressive arsenal of useful and marketable skills, allowing him to provide well for his family. Economic disaster changed all that. Steve, a big, friendly bear of a guy, once he got over the shock, started to look around for exactly what he might do with the rest of his life. Turns out that over the years he has had an ongoing love affair with woodworking, furniture making and the like. He also found that the surrounding Texas landscape provided some unusual opportunities with its own unique flavor of natural wood products, among them that pesky Mesquite. After doing some basic research and a lot of soul searching, Steve decided to stir all this together and settled on the goal of producing hand crafted mesquite furniture and similar items for sale, both to re-users, contractors and the general public. Not to be accused of being faint of heart, he jumped in with both feet, laying out several thousand dollars for first rate equipment, upgrading his shop to handle the most challenging projects. Then the fun began… Steve set about defining his product line, lining up sources of supply, refining his word working techniques, developing a web presence (http://www.harringtonsmesquitewoodworks.com/) , and turning out his initial flow of products and samples. Turn the clock ahead several months, and Harrington’s Mesquite Woodworks is still a work in progress, so stay tuned for the next chapter. Will it be a hit or a miss? Over here we’re rooting for resounding success. In the meantime, the point of this story is that if you, too, are feeling

the financial sting of economic setback, you might give Steve a growl. Over a Shiner Bock or two, he will most certainly offer his own brand of encouragement and wisdom, well sprinkled, of course, with anecdotes about the beauty and functionality of that good ol’ hand rubbed Texas Mesquite. Editor’s Note: Steve’s work and that of many other fine artisans may be seen at the upcoming Texas Mesquite Festival in Fredericksburg, October 8-10, 2010. October Astronomical Happenings… Oct 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionid meteor shower is the second of two showers that occur each year as a result of Earth passing through dust released by Halley’s Comet. The point from where the Orionid meteors appear to radiate is located within the constellation Orion. The Orionids generally begin on October 15 and end on October 29, with maximum generally occurring during the morning hours of October 20-22. The Orionids are barely detectable on the beginning and ending dates, but observers in the Northern Hemisphere will see around 20 meteors per hour at maximum, while observers in the Southern Hemisphere will see around 40 meteors per hour. There are other, weaker meteor showers going on around the same time as the Orionids. The Orionids generally appear
