SCLA Board

Invites Nassour lot owners to special meeting January 8th Greetings. This is a cordial invitation to ALL Nassour* Lot owners to attend a Special Nassour meeting with the SCLA Board of Directors. This Special Nassour meeting is for the purpose of discussing the important topic of mandatory membership to the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association for ALL Nassour lot owners. The 2010 BOD has given this agenda item thorough discussion and consideration, along with obtaining legal advice, in an attempt to fairly structure association tasks and goals with the knowledge of the imbalance between Nassour lot owners and non-Nassour lot owners, that is, between mandatory membership and voluntary membership. Certainly, all Sunset Canyon residents are invited to attend this open meeting. The Special Nassour meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 10 AM at the Sunset Canyon Baptist Church. The single item on the agenda is a discussion on an appropriate resolution to meet the SCLA responsibility to both mandatory AND voluntary members. As a corporation, the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association is accountable to both groups, however, the contradictory membership status has been creating an imbalance that has hindered association and community progress and cohesion. Two options for consideration at this meeting are: • (1) Nassour Lot owners call a motion to amend the Nassour Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions to remove Article III, Restriction #6 which requires mandatory membership to the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association. OR • (2) SCLA 2010 BOD would apportion the existing SCLA funds between the Sunset Canyon Landowners Association and a new organization. The Nassour members’ funds would remain with the SCLA and the remainder would be transferred to a newly-created voluntary Sunset Canyon Homeowners Association. Voluntary memberships would also be transferred to the new organization. A new Sunset Canyon Homeowners Association would be a voluntary Sunset Canyon community organization that would continue the customs and traditions set forth by the original SCLA members, open to all Sunset Canyon homeowners, without the imbalance of membership commitment or lot distinction. Please make every effort to join us Saturday morning to collaborate and resolve this issue that has stalled community involvement and unity, in an attempt to become a strong presence, as a community and organization, within the city of Dripping Springs and its future development. On behalf of the Board, respectfully, Teresa Carbajal Ravet, SCLA 2010 President *NOTE: To verify your lot/address as a Nassour Lot please visit the SCLA website, http:// www.sunsetcanyon.org/news.html, under the Documents tab, in the left-hand column. January 2011

From the Editor-In-Chief When we moved to the Hill Country, our builder told us, “First thing ya do is cut down all a them cedars!” For a variety of reasons, we never quite got around to it. As time has passed, we have developed a love-hate relationship with the ubiquitous cedar. We hate that they thickly blanket far too many hillsides, obscuring views and interfering with all manner of competing vegetation. On the other hand, we love the older specimens for their distinct and unique form and character. We have gleaned from those who are knowledgeable that they do have a rightful place and purpose in nature’s Hill Country scheme. As in many of life’s miracles, achieving détente with Mr. and Mrs. Juniperus Ashii is nothing short of a wonderful, virtuous act. Hence the sort-ofalmost ode as this month’s humble poetic offering. Wishing you and yours a great 2011, until next time…John Hoag

Canyon Call From the SCLA President… Happy New Year Neighbors & Friends. The 2011 New Year has begun with much anticipation and motivation to continue the positive growth in Sunset Canyon’s community involvement and care. The SCLA 2010 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs achieved a worthy start in garnering community cohesion and collaboration. This is a public thank you in appreciation for the time and energy volunteered by each member of the 2010 BOD and Chairs. Please give them your support and appreciation the next time you see them out in the SC community. They are; Kim Ort, Tammy Reed, Ben Fletcher, Mark Glass, Mary Clarkson, Michael McGown, Heidi Scholz, Cynthia Southerland, Gary Hale, Sandy Hale, Robert George, Matthew Wilcox, Phil Auldrigde, and John Hoag. To the many other SC families and friends that supported each of these valuable volunteers, a much deserved gratitude for the patience and extra relieve offered wholeheartedly. A brief year in review highlights the priority by the 2010 SCLA, which was to bring together the diversity of the Sunset Canyon community in a collaborative effort for the good of Sunset Canyon. The 2010 BOD and Chairs initiated work to strengthen the association by having a full nine member board, formalized

committees, and ratified current SCLA Bylaws. Community communication has strengthened with a monthly newsletter, updated website, community Google discussion group, and entrance boards. Community unity continued as traditional, annual events have been passed down to a new generation of homeowners to experience and invigorate as new residents take the lead in future volunteering and organization. Lastly, work is ongoing in relationship building between residential homeowners and commercial owners within Sunset Canyon. I strongly recommend thoughtful consideration to community participation and volunteerism. It doesn’t pay in dollars, however the recompense is inwardly valuable. As for me, I am thankful for the learning opportunity the position of the SCLA President has afforded. It has broaden my community knowledge, provided an array of friendships, and enhanced my volunteer experiences. It did not come without some struggle. However the community experiences and accomplishments far surpass the aches and pains. I look forward to a positive and continued involvement in the Sunset Canyon community. Respectfully, Teresa Carbajal Ravet SCLA 2010 President
