Official Publication of the Sunset Canyon Land Owner's Association

August 2010

An Important Message from your SCLA President

Greetings Sunset Canyon Community, In May the SCLA Board of Directors called a Special Member Meeting to request approval for budget expenditure to obtain a legal interpretation on the official authority of the SCLA on issues such as voluntary & mandatory memberships, construction reviews, and deed restrictions. A vote granted the hiring of attorney Patrice Arnold of Arnold & Associates to review SCLA’s legal documents. Ms. Arnold completed her review and provided the BOD and the association a summary. Board officers and committee chairs have had time to carefully study, consider, and discuss the attorney overview and recommendations. It is now time for the association and the BOD to “provide a framework within which the landowners of Sunset Canyon can act in matters of common interest.” Therefore, together with Sunset Canyon’s historical quality, the association must decide on its future being cognizant of the legal overview and recommendations. Ms. Arnold’s letter has been posted at the SCLA website, www.sunsetcanyon.org, for review and consideration. The BOD agreed that the opinion of the Sunset Canyon community is necessary in order to proceed with association work. An ad-hoc committee has been created to draft a survey and collect community consensus during the month of August. The survey will be available in both electronic form and hard copy to accommodate all SC community residents. Please make every effort to participate in the survey as all residents’ viewpoints are important. In addition, the BOD came up with five possible objectives with which to begin the association’s future work and solicits community input. To submit possible ideas, solutions, questions, and/or concerns please write an email to [email protected]. The five possible objectives include, but are not limited to,the following. The SCLA

should endeavor to “provide a framework” that, • Maintains the current model. • Unifies the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions of all 5 SC sections into one document and requires association membership for all property owners. • Unifies the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions of all 5 SC sections into one document and amends Nassour property owners to voluntary membership. • Offers association membership to property owners who are willing to subject their lots to the Nassour Declaration. • Transfer powers and duties of the SCLA, Inc. to an all Nassour property owners Board of Directors and form a separate SC Voluntary Organization. Respectfully, Teresa Carbajal Ravet, SCLA 2010 President Editor’s note. From the Editor…

A short time ago, I had occasion to attend my first Board meeting as your new Editor-In-Chief. I forgot to wear my spiffy fedora with the “PRESS” badge attached to the band, no garters on my sleeves either, but I was there nonetheless, armed with the conviction that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. The center of discussion was the attorney’s opinion letter that the General Membership authorized regarding the various restrictions applicable to Sunset Canyon lots and the SCLA’s role and authority related thereto. That sounds like a mouthful, and it is. Being dropped into the middle of this discussion was akin to looking down and suddenly realizing you are standing on top of an anthill. As you might guess, since there were seven Board members in attendance, there were at least seven opinions offered as to what it meant and what action, if any, should be taken. Everyone had their say, including this faithful scribe. Wielding the gavel effortlessly, President Teresa guided the Board through the process of reviewing its options, narrowing its focus, and adopting a plan of action. It was an impressive display of give and take. The result, a unanimous consensus. Bottom line for us, the Members, is that we have an opportunity to express our viewpoint via a survey outlining multiple options. A short version is in the minutes, and we will hear more about this through direct correspondence from the Board. We will also be able to review the attorney’s letter in its entirety on-line. It is not overstated to say that the Board has placed in our hands the opportunity to influence the future direction of SCLA. The ball is squarely in our court. Please go to www.sunsetcanyon.org and make your voice heard. Until next time, John Hoag ([email protected])

Old Burr Oak Temperature, nigh on a hundred Humidity, real high, too. Misery index, off the charts It’s mighty hot, that’s true.

Yes, summer’s here, with a vengeance The heat, it is no joke. That’s when you’ll find me hanging out Beneath our big Burr Oak. Branches arching toward the sky Its canopy spread wide Like all big trees, a constant breeze Blows in from side to side. Its mottled shade is surely welcome As triple digits beckon. That old Burr Oak is man’s best friend. And not your dog, I reckon.

Alert It’s not too early to be making plans to participate in the SCLA OktoberFest. Chairperson Kim Ort advises that the event will be held on Saturday, October 23rd. Kim says “We are looking for neighbors that would like to have a booth this year.  It is a great opportunity to share with the community your goods or services and it is free for the members of SCLA.” Kim ads “For the attendees, it is the time for Christmas shopping and you will be supporting the community by buying local.” So, mark the date and join the fun. If you are interested in having a booth, please send an e-mail to [email protected]

August Astronomical Happenings… August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year’s shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13th, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. The thin, crescent moon will be out of the way early, setting the stage for a potentially spectacular show. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight. August 13 - Triple Conjunction with the Moon. The planets Venus, Mars, and Saturn will all be close to the thin, crescent moon on this evening. Look to the west just after sunset.

Never Had It So Good (Sangria Wine, we mean)…

Well, July 4th has come and gone. Here we are, heading into more of those long, hot summer days. Fortunately, our ever-vigilant roving reporter had occasion to sample some great tasting Sangria at an Independence Day Celebration over at neighbor Clay and Christina Johnson’s lovely Triple Creek home. Turns out the author of this marvelous concoction was none other than SCLA Board Member, Mary Clarkson. Mary graciously agreed to share her recipe with Canyon Call, and we present it here in the hope it will help take the edge off those withering summer days ahead. Thanks, Mary Clarkson, and thanks, too, for serving on our BOD. Mary’s Sangria - Three bottles of dry red wine. I used a pinot noir, and two red tables. Juice of 12 limes mixed with 1 cup sugar and 1 cup of water to make a simple syrup. Add to the wine. Cut up lemon, limes and oranges and put slices in with mixture. Refrigerate overnight.  When ready to serve add one bottle each of club soda and ginger ale. Mary’s final admonition…enjoy!

Little Known Facts

Scott Burns, financial guru and Dripping Springs resident, in his advice column in the Business Section of the Austin American Statesman, tells us today’s wealth index shows that, to be in the 50th percentile of income (that’s right, exactly “middle income”), one needs to have invested savings of $!,845,500. This will generate an annual income of $34,511 at today’s yields. His best advice? Don’t give up your day job just yet.

This allows hummingbirds to flash colors or hide them which is useful for males who want to impress females or threaten other males. And don’t forget to keep that sugar water mixture in your feeder clean and fresh.

Those ubiquitous exploding cedar trees which dump all that pollen into the air, the cause of many a runny nose and itching eye (sometimes referred to as Cedar Fever), is really a member of the Cypress family, officially known as Juniperus Ashii. Whatever you call them, they can sure be a pain.

For over 10,000 years The Pedernales River Valley has been appreciated for its natural beauty, abundant wildlife and fertile soil. Flowing from deep springs in southeastern corner of Kimble County toward the northeast for 106 miles The Pedernales River crosses Gillespie, Blanco, and Hays counties, to its mouth on Lake Travis. The name translates from the Spanish as River of Flint, so named due to the abundance of flint rocks found in the riverbed and frequently quarried by Native Americans to fashion tools. Next time you are out and about, keep an eye peeled for arrowheads or other flint tools.

Hummingbirds. Our bird experts reveal that these fascinating creatures comprise the second largest family of birds in the Western Hemisphere. One astonishing trait is their ability to broadcast color. They radiate like hot coals in the sun. Hummingbird’s color comes from iridescence, not pigment. It winks on and off, depending on the light source and the angle of the viewer.

Canyon Call Calendar of Events…

Bird seed…

During August, the calendar right here in Sunset Canyon is pretty light. On the other hand, depending on one’s interests, there is so much going on in the surrounding Hill Country that it is hard to know what to highlight. Discretion being the better part of valor, we have elected to list a few web sites which do a pretty good job of telling you what’s going on in and around our area. Just click on one of the links below, or cut and paste it into your browser. We hope you and yours are having a great summer. http://drippingsprings.dsbabble.com/ http://www.topix.com/city/dripping-springs-tx http://www.cityofdrippingsprings.com/ http://www.hill-country-visitor.com/Events.aspx?cityId=56 http://roamingthehills.com/calendar-of-events/

“No shells. No mess” on the package it’s stated. They claim it’s the best, and that’s not overrated. We know that it’s true, cause the ultimate test Comes not from the birds. Mr. Squirrel knows best. - John Hoag
