SCLA Ushers In Big July 4th. Your Board Just Keeps On Rollin’

Greetings from the SCLA President, Teresa Carbajal Ravet. It’s already midyear and the Sunset Canyon community volunteers continue to press on. However, taking a deep breath one can reflect calmly and recognize all the work, improvements, and community events that Sunset Canyon has delightedly experienced. Volunteerism is flourishing and it is a most appreciated vista! The SC community continues to grow as new home construction resumes and new families move into the neighborhood. The SCLA is the place to get acquainted with the community and start making friends. Visit the SCLA website to learn more about community events, services, how to join the association and to volunteer your talents and energy. Everyone is welcome! The Board of Directors and Committees are working diligently to bring the association up to date. Progress is slow yet noticeably enhanced. Rest assured that these volunteers are deliberating a thoughtful and considerate process with the community in mind, ensuring that the operation of the association is done professionally and knowledgeably. Two independent professionals were consulted to guarantee that the work the Board is undertaking is done justly and successfully. Ms. Kim Vitray, SPHR, gave a presentation on parliamentary procedure which was invaluable. It refreshed and enlightened, and lastly, it unified the group in deliberating fairly and effectively. Following membership approval in May, the Board sought the advice of attorney Patrice Arnold and is now in receipt of her Opinion Letter. Although the letter arrived in time for a brief review at the June Board meeting, officers felt the need for additional opportunity to absorb and discuss its contents, and the manner in which the SCLA will proceed to ensure compliance with the governing documents of the association. Upon completion, a full report will be available to the SCLA membership. Work continues to preserve and improve the natural and uninhibited character that is Sunset Canyon. Your contribution is essential and needed, consider joining the association and volunteer to be a part of this prosperous community. Respectfully, Teresa Editor’s note: Due to our publishing schedule, you may receive your Canyon Call either before or after the July 4th weekend. In any event, we wish you all the very best as we join hands to celebrate the proud heritage of this great country. Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

From the Editor…

Hi to all. John Hoag here, newly installed Editor-In-Chief of the HOA official newsletter (the big title helps offset the lousy pay). First off, a big “Thank You” to Phil Auldridge for getting this set up and launched. Also, we are indebted to Peel, Inc. for doing a first-rate publication which, in case you were wondering, is at no expense to the Association. That’s correct, zero cost to us. The other side of the coin is that advertising revenue enables this arrangement, thus it is in our interest to encourage potential advertisers to support this effort. At the same time, we believe it is a pretty good deal for the advertisers, as over 700 copies of Canyon Call are distributed to homeowners right here in the neighborhood each month. The purpose of this, my first editorial, is to implore each of you to spread the word among potential advertisers and encourage their financial support. In turn, it is imperative that we patronize these advertisers and let them know we appreciate their participation. It is a simple truth that this publication cannot endure without these key elements. So, if you have a business, please consider an ad in Canyon Call. Please encourage your other acquaintances and businesses you deal with to likewise advertise with us. We think it is a win-win all around. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to share your ideas and concerns. It is my sincere wish to pass along timely, relevant and interesting information to the Sunset Canyon community. Until next time, John Hoag ([email protected])

Birds of a Feather… Oh, Mr. Hummingbird, how fleetly you flitter. Ah, Mr. Sparrow, how sweetly you twitter. Yes, Mr. Cardinal, decked out in red glory, And here’s Mrs. Mourning Dove, telling her story. There are Finches, Nuthatches, an occasional Starling, A few tiny Chickadees, which really are darling. Mr. Scrub Jay, so bossy, everyone gets up tight. They’re all so relieved he decides to take flight. Mr. Woodpecker hangs as if on a trapeze. But still gets his fill. To heck with the trees. And up overhead soars an ugly old vulture. Don’t ask him to dine…so lacking in culture. The big ones, the small ones, and some in between We relish each guest who is “making the scene.” Yes, our bird feeders serve as a source of nutrition, And our fine feathered friends are a welcome addition. - John Hoag

Canyon Call Hey! Everybody Into the Pool! Summer Plans, by Sadie Witkowski. The advent of the summer months means more than freedom from the tedious school day, it means the beginning of a new lifestyle. I personally go through the transformation from full time student to a seasonally employed part of the work force. You have no doubt been wondering what the youth of America plan to do with their summer. Our roving reporter posed that very question to Sunset Canyon resident and graduating senior, Sadie Witkowski (below). She is a busy young lady, and we thank her for taking the time to share with us. To highlight a few of her activities, she was named one of the Top Ten Graduates of the Dripping Springs High School class of 2010, has been a long time member of the Tiger Band Color Guard, and recently participated in the DSHS UIL Academic competition. Should be no surprise the Tiger Band voted her the Band Sweetheart, as well. Here’s what Sadie had to say.

Though some might claim that the work available is mere drudgery, I get a sense of satisfaction that I’m “earning my keep” and being productive. I’ve spent the last three years (as well as this current summer) working as a lifeguard at the Founder’s Pool. It’s often that I hear people express the stereotype that guards are only there to “get a tan and pick up chicks.” But in all honesty, it’s much more work than expected. There are bathrooms to clean and pool chemicals to monitor and adjust and those aren’t even the primary responsibilities. When on stand, I have to be on constant alert and ignore any possible distractions like visiting friends. While all that may seem wearisome in the extreme, it actually keeps me from falling into a summer lethargy. I enjoy keeping some semblance of organization and order. Not to mention, it gives me the chance to stay in shape via swimming laps before or after shifts. So while most teens are off traveling to Europe and Russia or going backpacking or on an orientation for college or simply sitting around the house playing video games, I’ll be up in the guard stand, sweating in the summer heat, yet loving every minute of it! ******************* The American Red Cross reminds us: “Summer is a great time to relax - except when it comes to water safety.” With Independence Day kicking off a long, hot summer, the Red Cross is reminding revelers about the essentials of water safety during poolside and beachfront fun. Outdoor activities are often the highlight of summer festivities but children and parents especially shouldn’t take a vacation from safety. “Playing it safe in and around the water and following a few simple guidelines will prevent many accidents.”

Canyon Call How is Your Lighting IQ?

“For literally years, our neighbors’ two lights above their garage door have cast an unwelcome bright light across the canyon into our space. If we leave the drapes in our bedroom open at night, the room is illuminated by these two lights, even though they are at a considerable distance.” The above quote is but one of several comments expressed at a recent neighborhood social gathering when the discussion turned to the wonder and beauty of the stars. Everyone could recount at least one experience where the spectacular nighttime display by Mother Nature left an indelible impression on their psyche. Often this was on a hunting or camping trip, or at some other venue where the intrusion of man-made lighting was minimal. On the other hand, if you were old enough, you might recall when observing the beauty of the stars was an everyday occurrence from right in your own front yard. The discussion soon turned to the sad fact that “city” lights have made it increasingly difficult to observe the night skies. Even worse, many observed that right here in our own neighborhood, there are residential and commercial lights which intrude unnecessarily into our field of vision. Genuine anger and frustration was expressed by more than one homeowner. So, what to do? First, quell the urge to extinguish the offending lights with a grenade launcher; an educational effort is a far more civilized alternative. A better understanding of the dynamics of proper lighting might go a long way toward decreasing the disruption of our night sky. There is a wealth of information available which makes the case for intelligent use of light, not only from an aesthetic

perspective, but from the standpoint of cost and security. Check out The International Dark Sky Association www.darksky.org . The City of Dripping Springs also has its own lighting consultant. And there is at least one commercial lighting company in our area which embraces intelligent lighting. Here is a quote from their web site, “Effective outdoor lighting has many benefits. However, the way that many outdoor lights are designed and installed neither takes into account the nature of the human eye nor current scientific knowledge. Poorly designed or installed outdoor lighting wastes billions of dollars each year in energy costs. It also reduces safety, jeopardizes security, diminishes property values, irritates neighbors, damages our immune systems and interferes with plants and wildlife. The cure is easy…” So, stow those grenade launchers for now and encourage your friends and neighbors to educate themselves about good lighting practices. Remember, “Love your neighbor as yourself. Put bad lighting on the shelf!” - John Hoag ([email protected])
