Alumni Corner Letter to the alumni community and calendar of upcoming events

UPCOMING Calendar of Events

Hall of Fame Dinner Dance

Dear fellow Hayesmen,

March 19, 2016

I wish you and your loved ones many blessings in 2016. The mission statement of the Cardinal Hayes High School alumni relations department is, “To add value to the professional and social lives of our alumni and students”. This simple yet powerful mission inspires me each day. It provides direction as traditional and new initiatives are developed to add value to the roles and goals you have in life. With the benefit of having now spent a year in my position, I can say without hesitation that leveraging the alumni base for the mutual benefit of alumni and students is the most important thing we can do to live out our mission. Alumni want to give back by mentoring, teaching and tutoring, and providing internship and employment opportunities. From our own experience as Hayesmen, we know students seek mentoring and direction during their teenage years. It is a time we all remember as exciting but also often filled with angst as to what to do next. In this new year, my hope is to bridge the gap between those with the noble need to help and those with the crucial desire to be helped. Alumni also want to aid other alumni. In 2016, we will work on initiatives focused on creating professional affinity groups wherein Hayesmen can coalesce around shared professional interests and opportunities. New resources are being assessed to make this process more streamlined for the benefit of all. I look forward to sharing more details in the coming months. Another important element of our work is to continue to develop ways for alumni to connect with one another. With traditional events such as the Hall of Fame dinner

WHAT WILL YOUR LEGACY BE?

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY WITH CARDINAL HAYES

When you are looking for ways to help Cardinal Hayes sustain its reputation as one of the nation’s premier Catholic schools, you shouldn’t feel like you are choosing between your philanthropic goals and financial security.

One gift that allows you to support Hayes while receiving fixed payments for life is

a charitable gift annuity.

Not only does this gift provide you with regular payments and allow us to further our work, but this gift also allows you to receive a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction. For example, if Jack, 70, and Mary, 68, want to make contribution to Hayes that will support our work for generations to come, but they also want to ensure that they have dependable income during their years, they can establish a $50,000 dual life charitable gift annuity with Hayes. Based on their ages, they will receive a payment of $2,250 each year for the remainder of both of their lives. They will also be eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $14,332* when they itemize. Finally, they will know that after their lifetimes, the remaining amount will be used to ensure the success of Hayes students.

Timothy Poindexter, Marco Perez, Ikponmwosa Pat-Osagie, and four students from Cardinal Spellman High School had an in-depth discussion concerning some of society’s most pressing issues. Over 300 million listeners from across the globe heard our Hayesmen debate about topics ranging from the death penalty to immigration. The students reflected on how the Pope’s visit brought a better understanding of some of the challenges we face as a nation. “It’s always nice to have a middle ground. Pope Francis is like a bridge. He connects the political world with the traditional world, so that we can have a stronger sense of communication. Our main goal should always be about

Marco Perez believes that this was an exceptional opportunity. “It was amazing having my voice heard among the younger generation. The Pope’s statement,… ‘I am an immigrant,’ shows that he is a man of the people. His words act as a beacon of hope for all us.” For Ikpownmwosa, it was a joy to just be heard as a teenager. “We discussed all the topics that the Pope talked about. Just to have millions of people listening is huge. I barely can get my parents to listen to me, so having millions of people listening to my opinion was amazing.” The four Hayesmen walked away from this experience with a great sense of pride. They represented Cardinal Hayes as strong, intellectual, and principled young men.

COVERAGE OF THE POPE’S 2015 VISIT TO NYC

Pope Francis Inspires Hayes Seniors during Visit to New York City — BY JACKINA FARSHTEY

Pope Francis’s historic visit to New York City has left a profound impression on all of us. Thousands of New Yorkers lined the streets of Fifth Avenue, 34th Street and Central Park West to get a glimpse of the 78-year-old pontiff. People of different religions, cultures and ethnic backgrounds came together to hear his heartfelt words. His universal message of peace, unity and love captivated audiences wherever he went. Despite the demands of his schedule and formal speaking engagements, he made it a point to meet with many of his young supporters. The young men of Cardinal Hayes enjoyed a special role in the papal visit. Senior Daniel Afrifa represented the Hayes community with poise and distinction. Afrifa was interviewed by the Daily News, CNN, CBS 2 New York and other media outlets. Afrifa went on to meet Pope Francis at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Harlem, where he witnessed firsthand the Pope’s charismatic appeal. Seventeen-year-old Carlos Ramos was selected to say a decade of the rosary with the pontiff at Madison Square Garden. Timothy Poindexter, Ikponmwosa Pat-Osagie, and Marco

Perez took part in an hour-long BBC discussion about the Pope’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly. Our Hayesmen demonstrated their thoughtfulness by providing insightful comments on various topics ranging from human rights to the current ecological crisis. Their considerate examination of these topics shed new light on these issues.

For a few days, New Yorkers stepped away from their frenetic schedules to pause and hear the Pope’s message of inclusion and tolerance. Whether it was the interreligious speech at Ground Zero or the Papal Homily at Madison Square Garden, Pope Francis connected with us in a way that few can and used his visit to try and bring us all closer together.

THE FRATERNITY

— BY JACKINA FARSHTEY The House that Hayes built was rocking at the 2015 Fall Sports Rally! The entire Hayes community gathered in the gym to be introduced to the members of the fall sports teams, and show Hayes’ tremendous school spirit. Brother Sherlog energized the crowd with an electrifying speech about the power of cardinal and gold. This event signals the beginning of the fall sports season, and there were plenty of fans ready to show support for their teams. The H-Line and the band kept the momentum going for the audience. For junior Kristoff Robinson, music is the perfect channel through which to express his support. “We all have a voice, and we express ourselves differently. For me playing the drums is a form of self-expression and showing my respect.” As the morning went on, we all witnessed the power of brotherhood, friendship and mutual respect. Justin Covington, captain of the varsity football team, addressed the school with words of perseverance and determination. “These people are family to me. They showed me so much love.” Covington spoke eloquently about the importance of doing your best in every aspect of your life.

He went on to express his gratitude for the unwavering support that he has received from faculty and his fellow Hayesmen throughout the past four years. Timothy Poindexter, co-captain of the football team, is ready for the season and humbled by the camaraderie. “Being part of the varsity team is a great honor. We have a real strong team going forward.” For many of the senior players, this rally was bittersweet. “This is my last time doing this. I’ve connected with these guys for several years. This is so special to me,” said football player Raheem Wilson. Brandon Rodriguez summed it up best. “The rally brings the spirit of Hayes to every student.” If this event is any indication of what is to come, our rivals will surely lose. Our Hayesmen are ready to dominate!

Hayesmen Raise Funds

16 |

WINTER

2016

In the United States one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

This statistic is a reminder that early detection and screening are crucial tools in the battle against this disease. On Sunday, October 18th, twenty Hayesmen from the Student Activities Committee (SAC) helped raise awareness at the 2015 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Orchard Beach. For some Hayesmen, this event hit particularly close to home. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Martinez has seen the devastating effects of cancer on his own family. “There are two of my family members who have breast cancer and several others are battling different types of cancer. I am here today to help put an end to cancer and find a cure.” Mikal McKay single-handedly raised $680 for the campaign and knows how difficult it is to live with chronic health problems. “This event is so significant to me, because I have Sickle Cell Anemia. I know the pain of going to the doctor every three months and dealing with harsh symptoms. You don’t have to donate money, but I encourage people to give their time.” For the past twelve years, the Making Strides

“It is very important to raise awareness, especially in our community. In the Bronx over 800 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Against Breast Cancer Walk has attracted over 11,000 participants each year. In 2014, the organization raised more than $500,000. Marlene Medina, the Community Manager of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer stressed that education is a key factor in helping to combat the disease. “It is very important to raise awareness, especially in our community. In the Bronx over 800 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. It has been proven that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.” At the end of the campaign, SAC raised $2,085 in support of the fight to find a cure. Everton Rodriguez, a member of SAC since his junior year, would like to help increase the survival rate through more research. “We lose so many women to breast cancer every year. If we cure it, then we can celebrate more birthdays.”

URBAN FARMING AND BEAUTIFYING THE CONCOURSE BY JACKINA FARSHTEY

18 |

WINTER

2016

WITH A GROWING POPULATION AND DEPLETING FOOD RESOURCES, THE WORLD IS AT A CRUCIAL MOMENT IN HISTORY. FOOD SUSTAINABILITY IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR SURVIVAL, AND FINDING WAYS TO MAINTAIN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IS A DAUNTING TASK FOR SCIENTISTS. According to a report by the United Nations Population Fund, by 2030, the majority of the world will be living in urban areas. In the South Bronx and other cities around the country, residents are using urban farming as a way to address this challenge.

Four Hayesmen who are members of the Cardinal Hayes Environmental Club are taking a proactive approach to dealing with this problem. They help manage the New Roots Community Farm, which has become a source of pride for the area.

WINTER

2 0 1 6 | 19

Daniel Afrifa, who has been part of the club since his sophomore year finds the work rewarding. “Here in the South Bronx, gardens are not something that you frequently see. I think public green spaces and vegetable gardens enrich the community and enable people living in the city to experience nature.” Seventeen-year-old Edwin Dominguez enjoys seeing the end result. “We grow basil, tomatoes and other fresh vegetables. It’s really interesting to see how nature works and you get to see first-hand how all your hard work pays off.” Since 2012, The New York Botanical Garden—Bronx Green-Up Program and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) have partnered to provide onsite technical training to members of the local community, students from various schools and recently arrived refugees from many countries. This initiative has been instrumental in helping to strengthen the urban agricultural movement throughout the borough. Susan Katz, Community Horticulturist for The New York Botanical Garden—Bronx Green-Up Program was impressed by the level of dedication and focus demonstrated by the students. “They were enthusiastic about the project. As they got more involved, the students realized they were helping the neighborhood thrive. This instills a strong sense of ownership.” Kathleen

McTigue, New Roots Program Manager believes the involvement of the younger generation is important. “It was an eye opening moment for me to see how this has helped the young men. They are always respectful and willing to help.” Brother Chiulli, who is the moderator of the environmental club, is proud of students’ accomplishments. Our students have developed a certain level of maturity and teamwork. This program has also fostered more curiosity.

For Raymundo-Alvarez, this experience has a deeper meaning. “I feel good about being a part of this program. I believe I am making my community a better place to live and I take pride in the food that I’ve helped to produce. This is my lasting contribution to society and that is a great feeling.” Another initiative that is important to the environmental club is the beautification of the South Bronx. On Columbus Day, Mr. Terence Mulvey and Mr. Winston van Buitenen led several members of the club to trim bushes, mulch flower beds and plant a colorful array of Chrysanthamums on

the traffic islands in front of the school. The students are doing their part in creating a cohesive environment and extending the Cardinal Hayes Campus. Victor Gautreaux was pleased to be part of the project. “It was satisfying to see all the wonderful results of our hard work. If we don’t have any trees it will lessen the oxygen content in the air, so it is important to take care of our environment.” Sixteenyear-old Xavier Nunez was grateful that community members supported the clean-up. “We had a number of residents who thanked us while we were working. I felt happy that people cared about what we were trying to accomplish.” Prince Hunt, who recently joined the club, believes that setting a good example will help. “As a Hayesmen we live by a certain standard of success and discipline. Proper appearance is important and that is why we wear a suit and tie. If we must look presentable, so must our school.”

“I believe I am making my community a better place to live and I take pride in the food that I’ve helped to produce.”

BY JACKINA FARSHTEY

Since the French Royal Court of Louis XVI first established the rules of etiquette, the code of conduct has evolved over the years, but the basic principles of being polite and well-groomed has remained the same. Being unaware of these social graces can leave an individual socially clumsy. Sharon-Frances Moore, an Etiquette Coach has helped many clients over the years learn the nuances of proper social skills. Moore emphasizes that etiquette is of concern for everyone, not only professionals. Etiquette helps develop confidence. It is about personal empowerment and career advancement.

hange didn’t come easy for seventeen-yearold Nathan Smith. As a triple jumper for the Cardinal Hayes High School track team, setting the pace required him to take a series of detours before he finally found his path. Already a

member of the track team as a sprinter, Smith was not at all interested in triple jumping; then, one day, Coach Craig Joseph became aware of Smith’s raw potential. It took stern warnings, time in JUG and the guiding but firm hand of Coach Joseph for Smith to begin to see the importance of his talents. Through countless hours of practice at the Armory on East 168th Street, Smith began to perfect his craft. Those long practice sessions were a major turning point that would change his work ethic and the course of his life. All his hard work paid off on December 9th, when he signed a national

Coach Joseph saw I had potential and I owe it all to him. He kicked me off the team for a week and told me if I wanted this to be a part of my life to come back when I was truly ready. After I went a couple of days without being on the team, I realized I had to change.”

Smith also credited the culture of support and brotherhood at Hayes for his new found success. “When I came to Hayes I changed as a person, I started being more respectable. Hayes became so much a part of my life that I could not live without it.” Nathan Smith is now a self-assured and confident young man ready to embark a new and promising journey in his life.

well designed space can have a significant impact on productivity. The newly constructed Guidance Resource Center at Cardinal Hayes High School is a sleek and modern

space where students can feel comfortable while working to become inspired. The room is a nod to minimalism with stainless steel stools and splashes of contemporary pastel colors and slate grey flooring. The modern style allows students to sit comfortably while writing their college entrance essays or perusing various educational websites for internship opportunities. The space has garnered positive responses from students. Senior Jonathan Torres was happy to see this dramatic makeover.

hen you get Donald and David Almeida into the same room, you witness the unparalleled connection that they have as twin brothers. They are swapping stories and reminiscing about the carefree moments of their adolescent years. Beneath this jovial and light-hearted banter are a passion and commitment to strengthen the Cardinal Hayes legacy. This story began long before their successful careers in the upper echelon of corporate America. Growing up in Northern Yonkers in a large family, the brothers developed a strong work ethic that would sustain them far beyond their teenage years. Every summer, they worked at their father’s construction business learning the importance of hard work, discipline, and determination. The brothers also developed strong relationships with neighborhood friends, who eventually helped with their decision to attend Cardinal Hayes High School. Traveling from Yonkers, New York to the Bronx was a memorable trip. Donald remembers it as a time of self-reliance that created a feeling of empowerment.

“YOU BECOME INDEPENDENT VERY QUICKLY WHEN YOU COMMUTE BY TRAIN AND BUS.” At Hayes, David played a variety of sports, including baseball and tennis, and was a dedicated member of the band. As time went on, he began to understand the role of Hayes in his own life. “There was an abundance to push forth the building of a Hayesmen. The school did a good job to prepare us for life. They pushed you enough and directed you to the right place.” For Donald, the Hayes experience prepared him for the intellectual rigors of college life. “My time at Hayes allowed me to get accepted to Fordham University.”

What matters is adult role models and mentorship, which is a crucial element. If alumni got more in touch with the students, then they would in turn be more in touch with the school.” In the early 1980s, David took a prominent role in urban education. “I became more serious about inner city Catholic Schools and Hayes. Helping the kids is an important part of the work that we are doing. I cannot tell you how much respect I have for them. To this day, I am a proponent of Hayes. They do a great job and teachers are wonderful.” Although times have changed, the goal remains the same. Like the Almeidas, our Hayesmen see education as the pathway to a world brimming with infinite possibilities. They hope to inspire the next generation of Hayesmen to continue the strong tradition of brotherhood and support. he rivalry between Cardinal Hayes High School and Mount Saint Michael Academy has spanned 69 years. When the rivalry began, Franklin Roosevelt was President of the United States, Rodgers & Hammerstein debuted Oklahoma!, and Bing Crosby topped the music charts with his iconic song “White Christmas.” What does this tell you? Well, that rivalries never fade; they only grow stronger with time. The Mountaineers held the Turkey Bowl Championship title for decades before The Cardinals recaptured the crown in 2013. For the past three years, Hayes has become a force to be reckoned with on the field. With Coach CJ O’Neil at the helm, the Varsity Football Team has remained victorious.

It’s an opportunity to get the student body together to see old friends.” For Murray, the last few victories were incredibly special. He remains committed to cheering on our Hayesmen-- win or lose. “The loyalty of the Hayesmen is tremendous. The guys always had a deep appreciation for the opportunities that Cardinal Hayes gave them.” Murray also has some sound advice for the younger generation.

IN MEMORIAM MONSIGNOR

DELANO

JOSEPH C.

COWAN

ANSALDI

On November 20th, the Hayes community remembered

The Hayes community is saddened by the passing of

Delano Cowan. In a moving memorial service, students,

Monsignor Joseph Ansaldi. As a devoted educator, mentor,

faculty and staff gathered in the Regis Philbin Auditorium to honor and celebrate the life of a young man who had so much potential. Cowan’s family was present to witness the outpouring of love and support. “Our Brother is here with us. He is in every Hayesmen in this building,” said Father Tierney. The spirit of brotherhood was alive and well when Delano’s friends and teammates spoke about the impact he had on their lives. As a member of the Varsity Football Team, Cowan was a defensive tackle who demonstrated team spirit and a love for the sport. Coach CJ O’Neil remembers the sixteen–year-old

and priest, Monsignor Ansaldi touched the lives of many who knew him.

HE WAS KNOWN AS A FAIR AND DEDICATED ADMINISTRATOR WHO WORKED HARD TO MAKE CATHOLIC EDUCATION MORE AFFORDABLE FOR FAMILIES. At the time of his death, he was Principal of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School in Staten Island where he spent 27 years in service. From 1963 to 1978, Monsignor Ansaldi was a history teacher at Cardinal Hayes High School. In 1990, he was named Monsignor by Pope John Paul, II. The following year, Cardinal John J. O’Connor named him co-vicar for

as a determined young man. “He was a nice student who was

Staten Island. Monsignor is survived by his siblings and

very coachable and a hard worker. He was a young man that

several nieces and nephews.

helped your program get better.”

CLASS 1945 COACH CRAIG JOSEPH, WHO COACHED DELANO FOR TWO YEARS ON THE JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM, REMEMBERS HIM FONDLY.

“DELANO WAS REALLY A GOOD STUDENT. HE PRESENTED HIMSELF WELL AND WAS DOING WELL IN SCHOOL. HE WAS THE TYPE OF YOUNG MAN THAT ASPIRED TO DO A GREAT DEAL WITH HIS LIFE AND BECOME A DIFFERENCE MAKER.” It is clear that Delano Cowan will live forever in our hearts as a brother, a friend, and a great Hayesman. Rest in peace. # DC90Forever.
