Attending the class Caring for Your Aging Parents was a tremendous benefit to me. My mother has Alzheimer ’s disease and my father was and is struggling from the burden of caregiving. They were losing the battle in their farm home. Learning about the resources available to help us navigate this life transition was a blessing. We all are faced with this reality— if not for a parent, for preparing ourselves and reducing the burden placed on our loved ones. My family engaged the service of one of the presenters whom Pam connected me with to help facilitate getting our parents to agree to move off the farm and into a supportive new environment. Having knowledgeable, experienced and emotionally detached support is a huge benefit in negotiating this transition. “There are so many There are so many resources available, resources available I never imagined even existed. Case ... Case managers, managers, Medicare, Medicaid, trusts, Medicare, wills, psychological counseling and Medicaid, trusts, facility placement resources are all out there. The few evenings of class were wills, psychological a great investment. Getting a personal counseling and link to further resources and a chance facility placement” to ask questions is a true opportunity to break the barriers of fear and ignorance, allowing us to move forward. We just tapped another resource this week to facilitate needed emotional support for mom’s transition to memory care. Members of our Southwood family I visit with every Sunday were going through similar issues. Just connecting to the support of others in my faith community is a blessing. I’d encourage anyone to take this class!

`` DivorceCare (8 wks)

Led by Connie Arends and Dave Huber

Are you separated or going through a divorce? Does it feel like no one understands? Find help and healing through the support of others going through a similar situation. Colbi Schuster, a past participant of DivorceCare, shared the following about her experience. At the time I was divorced, I crawled my way through a lengthy maze of conflicting and confusing human emotions, certain I was the only one experiencing such a struggle. I had been divorced over ten years when Pam reached out to share Southwood’s new Divorce Care series. I declined at first thinking I had been divorced so long already—what good would come of it after all that time and was equally concerned I would re-open scars of the past. The next session that came along, Pam again reached out and I felt a gentle spiritual nudge, so I decided to give it a try. I thought, perhaps I could learn something new, or climb over the last remaining bumps that would carry me out of the past and into the present for good. The very first session, we watched a video that touched every corner of my heart. I had never felt so understood and validated. The rollercoaster of emotions I had been riding—were NORMAL! While no two divorces are the same, there are commonalities. Southwood’s divorce care class is a safe, private, caring environment offering much needed support for those experiencing this life changing event. As a result of attending the class, I’ve experienced healing and gained new friendships. I’m thankful for Southwood’s Divorce Care Ministry! Visit southwoodlutheran.org/events to register.
