Cariology  Section  Mission  Statement       “To provide a venue within ADEA to discuss and enhance the teaching of Cariology- the science related to the disease and management of dental caries- within North American dental and allied dental programs, with the aim of providing evidence based care, surgical and nonsurgical, for patients of all ages. The Cariology Section will work with all relevant sections of ADEA, from basic sciences to clinical sciences, to develop teaching programs and treatment protocols that apply the science of cariology to enhance the quality of care to the public.”

Curriculum  Efforts  

ì  Dr.  Margherita  Fontana   Recommended “Caries Management” School Competency: On graduation a dentist must be competent in evidence-based caries detection, diagnosis, risk assessment, prevention, nonsurgical and surgical management, both at the individual and community level, and be able to re-assess the outcomes of intervention overtime

2-23 At a minimum, graduates must be competent in providing oral health care within the scope of general dentistry, as defined by the school, including: a.  patient assessment, diagnosis, comprehensive treatment planning, prognosis, and informed consent; b.  screening and risk assessment for head and neck cancer; c.  recognizing the complexity of patient treatment and identifying when referral is indicated; d.  health promotion and disease prevention; e.  local anesthesia, and pain and anxiety control; f.  contemporary caries management g.  tooth-preserving restoration of teeth; h.  communicating and managing dental laboratory procedures in support of patient care; i.  replacement of teeth including fixed, removable and dental implant prosthodontic therapies; j.  periodontal therapy; k.  pulpal therapy; l.  oral mucosal and osseous disorders; m.  hard and soft tissue surgery; n.  dental emergencies; o.  malocclusion and space management; and p.  evaluation of the outcomes of treatment, recall strategies, and prognosis. 12
