GETTING INVOLVED By Douglas H. Domedion As everyone in our area knows there has been a big push to put a stone quarry up on Fletcher Chapel Road next to the Iroquois National Refuge Who doesn’t get thrilled to see an for the last ten years. There are concerns by local eagle over the Shelby area? residents about the effect it could have on the Refuge and rightfully so. The INWR, along with the State Oak Orchard Wildlife Management area and even the State Tonawanda Management Area, could be adversely effected by this kind of project. No one knows for sure what will happen to our water table when the blasting starts or how far its effects can reach. A low water table could drastically affect the marshes in this area and in turn could change the large assortment of wildlife the area presently supports. The network of marshes in these refuge areas are not just something that developed by itself; it took a lot of work, time and money to get them where they are now. It also takes a great deal of management to keep them going as they are with water control being a huge part of this. This dry summer has shown us how drastic the effect the lack of water can be on the marshes, ponds and the Oak Orchard Creek. Low water levels in the refuge areas concentrates wildlife such as great blue herons, great egrets, black-crowned night herons, green herons, eagles and ospreys to the few marshes that have any amount of water in them which in turns makes them more susceptible to predators and diseases. Waterfowl production can also drop drastically because of food shortage and increased predation. Many folks waterfowl hunt on the refuge areas, but the area is not going to hold many ducks if the water levels remain low. Many folks travel to this area, some from a great distance, in both the spring and fall to witness the wonder of the migration. Our refuge area draws a huge assortment of birds that may never stop here if it weren’t for the marshes. In the last 10 to 15 years, I have seen a real increase of such birds as the great egrets, ospreys and eagles that make this area their home in the summer. Even the sandhill crane has taken notice of our area and is now starting to nest here. Personally, I have spend a great amount of time in the refuge area photographing nature and am fortunate to witness many things that other folks don’t often see. As a volunteer for both the State DEC and the USFWS for many years I have seen many great things done to develop and hold on to the real “jewel” we have here. I have hunted, trapped, fished and photographed nature since the age that my parents felt comfortable allowing me to be out there in the “wilderness” on my own, but I still learn something new every time out and still marvel at the soaring of a bald eagle. It is such a marvelous experience out there giving peace of mind and refreshing life and so I ask myself, “Why would anyone want to jeopardize all this for personnel gain?” The fight against this potential threat to the refuge continues, but there is more, much more. What about the quality of life for those of us who live near this proposed quarry? We live here because of the peace and quiet of the rural area. Many of us love to be able to observe a vast amount of nature within a few minutes of our homes; things many others travel great distance to witness. I have lived here in Shelby for over 30 years, many others have been here their whole lives and we stay here for a reason. Blasting, dust, truck traffic and lost of value of our homes and properties are not among them. Recently, an overlay of 3,000 feet out from the refuge areas has been proposed that would prevent blasting, stone quarries, race tracks, junk yards and etc. All aimed to help retain our quality of life and to protect the refuge area. There are few people who don’t like to have government tell them what they can and can’t do on their land. At a hearing at the Shelby Town Hall recently our Town Board mentioned that some of those concerns can be addressed; like the Warrior House developed to help our disabled veterans enjoy the great outdoors and the possible development of a Boy Scout Camp on land next to the west side of the INWR. These are things that do not take away from the surrounding neighbors and actually improve it, much different from all the conditions associated with a stone quarry. No one is trying to take away the rights of large land owners in the area, just preserve what we have. If you feel strongly about this it is important to let the Town of Shelby Town Board know your feelings. This can be done with a written comment delivered at the Town Hall at 4662 Salt Works Road in Medina, a letter addressed to them at 4662 Salt Works Road, Medina, NY 14103 or an e-mail at www.townofshelbyny.org/town-board and don’t forget to let them let them know if you are a resident of this area. If you enjoy visiting the refuge areas here or enjoy the peaceful and quiet life in Shelby you need to do this before October 1.

He was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Harrisburg, Pa., a son of the late James Howard and Grace Viola (Jewell) Engle. Bob was a member of Holy Family ParishSt. Joseph’s Church. He was a retiree of Pfaudler Co. in Rochester and a member of the United Steel Workers Union #1498. Bob enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, or any outside activity. He also loved singing and playing the harmonica. He was predeceased by his siblings Marian Phillips, John Engle, Lloyd Engle, Howard Engle, Richard Engle, William Engle, and Ruth O’Hearn; and his grandson Jason Raymond Post. Hispanic music is vast and nuanced. Certain well-known rhythms and styles are classified as traditional Latin music, but the genre goes beyond the salsas, merengues and tangos commonly seen in dance competitions. Hundreds of styles of music fall under the umbrella of Latin music. The following is just a smattering of the Latin music styles that are popular around the world. Son
Son cubano originated in Cuba and gained popularity elsewhere in the 1930s. Son is a relatively recent musical style and also one of the most influential and widespread forms of Latin music. Son is characterized by the inclusion of Spanish guitar, percussion instruments and African rhythms. While traditional son is seldom heard today, this style of music has been assimilated into other musical genres that continue the essence of son in modern day music. Salsa
This musical style is a blend of sounds from traditional native rhythms. As musicians from various points came together in America, their musical forms fused and mixed to create Latin music hybrids known and loved for decades. One of these hybrids was salsa, and salsa evolved differently depending on geography. However, most salsa is characterized by a fastpaced energy and the heavy use of percussion instruments. Cumbia

Columbia’s best-known contribution to the Latin music world is Cumbia, which presumably began during Columbia’s struggle for independence in the 19th century. Cumbia is traditionally played with tambor drums and large gaita flutes. Horns, brass and other big band instruments were eventually added to the original instruments to market to more areas of America. Cumbia is still very popular in South America, Mexico and Central America. Ranchera Ranchera is one of the most popular forms of Latin American music. It is the traditional music of Mexico and originally was sung and played by only one performer. Traditional rancheras are about love, nature or patriotism. Today’s ranchera has evolved into larger ensembles and can include guitars, strings, trumpets, and accordions. Zamba
Zamba, not to be confused with samba, is a traditional Argentinian music and style of dance. The dance is performed by couples who circle each other elegantly waving handkerchiefs. It is a slow style of music played primarily on the guitar and bombo leguero. Tourists can witness zamba dancing on the streets of Argentina, and it is frequently performed during national holidays
