Domedion If you look at the calendar it will tell you that fall officially started on Sept. 22, but there are better “nature signs.” Have you noticed that suddenly the hummingbird numbers have really dropped? I believe the old birds head south earlier The velvet will be coming off soon! starting with the males as the few hummers left now seem to be this year’s birds. I keep my hummingbird feeders up until Oct. 1, as in the past I have had some late hummers passing through and I figure they could use the extra boost on their trip south. It is important to continue to keep the feeder fresh and clean, but with the cooler weather you can probably go a little longer between refills and cleaning. At this time there is no need to completely fill the feeder, only enough to make it last five to seven days. Usually there are about seven feeders hanging up around my house and the same at camp, but now the number has been reduce to just a few to accommodate the few birds that remain. They have given us a lot of entertainment this summer, so we need to look after them up until the last minute. A friend and I rode our motorcycles down to camp last week and you could see a slight change to the color of the leaves across the valley from my cabin. As the color and thrill of the hummers leaves us, Mother Nature is setting up another of her wonders for us. Fall foliage is always a favorite time for me and the camera with each year being different, with some better than others. Usually dry conditions mean less spectacular colors so I’m thinking this fall may be a little less “wow.” Right now the Canada geese we are seeing are resident birds, but starting next week I feel migrating geese will be moving into the area to help announce the arrival of fall, and shortly afterwards new ducks will be moving in. Of course the martins and swallows have moved on, and many of the other small birds are gathering for their trip south. Beavers and muskrats are busy building feed beds in the water for this winter, and raccoons are starting to put on as much fat as they can for the coming winter. This is the month when the deer begin to replace their summer reddish coats with heavier brown winter coverings. The bucks will also be losing the velvet on their antlers and becoming a little more sly about wandering out into the open areas. Another event that signals fall in September is Hunting and Fishing Day. The DEC at our Region 8 Office in Avon dropped the event a few years ago which attracted a HUGE crowd every year, but sportsman’s clubs have stepped up to carry on the tradition. It is a important event not only for the sportsmen, but also to those who really don’t hunt or know a lot about our great outdoors. It gives them a chance to see what inspires us hunters, trappers and fisherman (and nature photographers). It also gives these folks, who are not sportsmen, a chance to show their children what it is all about. Sportsmen get to see new equipment and tell each other about their past adventures (and tell wild stories) and formulate plans for the upcoming seasons. Personally, I have not attended a Hunting and Fishing Day event in quite a while, but I did this year. By chance a good friend was working at the one being conducted at Godfrey’s Pond in Genesee County just northeast of Batavia. I had heard of this private conservation club, but knew nothing about it or even its exact location. I found out this past weekend when they had their 6th Annual Hunting and Fishing Day weekend. There are about 800 acres of club grounds and the membership is around 1,000 right now. This is not a new conservation club: it started in 1909! I was in total shock at what I found and recommend it as a place to get acquainted with. I was given a complete tour of the place by a club member in a UTV and as mentioned before was in complete shock as to what I saw. The lake is about 46 acres and has bass, blue gills, perch and pike, with a separate 4.5-acre trout pond that is stocked by their hatchery. There are about five miles of trails to hike on, two archery ranges, a pistol and rifle range for target practice, a clay pigeon shooting range and a camping area. There are many things that the young folks will enjoy too, such as a playground with swings etc., a shallow beach area with a lifeguard, an aviary with some pretty exotic birds with some of our more common game birds. There are canoes, row boats, paddle boats and kayaks that can be rented for a very nominal fee, a primitive camping area, several pavilions and a clubhouse. In the fall they stock pheasants from September through February on adjacent farms for membership hunting and of course there is ice skating, ice fishing and sledding in the winter. Rebecca Lynn “Becki” Dieter, 41, of Medina, N.Y., went to be with the Lord on Mon., Sept. 19, 2016, at her home. Born on Aug. 21, 1975, in Newfane, N.Y., she was the daughter of Rosemary M. (Robarge) and the late Hugh J. Dieter Jr. Becki graduated from Medina High School in 1993 and enlisted in the U.S. Airforce, serving as a air traffic controller. On returning home, she worked as a Department Manager for Home Depot in Michigan and New York. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed the outdoors, especially watching wildlife. Besides her mother, Rosemary of Medina, she is survived by her three children, Ryan Lopano of North Carolina, Jaden and Jaylani Dieter, both of Medina; five siblings, Patrick Dieter of Texas, Steven (Marcy) Dieter, John (Katie) Dieter, Anne Mangold, Mary (Eddie Ortiz) Dieter, all of Medina; along with several nieces and nephews. Besides her father, Becki is predeceased by a brother, Brian Dieter. Relatives and friends may call on Mon., Sept. 26, 2016, from 5-8 p.m. at the Bogan & Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St., Medina, NY 14103. Mr. Donald E. “Pete” Myhill, of Medina, passed away on Fri., Sept. 16, 2016, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home. Mr. Myhill was born in Medina on Oct. 17, 1923, a son of the late Earl and Ruth (Gage) Myhill. A graduate of Medina High School, class of 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force on Feb. 16, 1943. After basic training, he was sent to Armament School in Colorado, then Gunnery School in Texas. He was assigned to T.G. Olsom’s Crew as a Ball Turret Gunner on a B-24 bomber. After completing bomber and photo recon training, he was assigned to the 5th Air Force, 6th Photo Group, 20th Combat Mapping Squadron based in Nadzab, New Guinea, on May 22, 1944. Later he was based on Biak Island in Northern New Guinea and Leyte Island in the Philippines. He flew on 47 missions on a B24(F7) and was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, with 4 battle stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon; and the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross with three Silver Cross Devices gunner wings. He was discharged on Oct. 25, 1945, with rank of S/Sgt. On Sept. 21, 1949, he married the former Virginia M. Britt. Mr. Myhill was employed by New York Telephone Company for 38 years. He served 30 years in management, nine as a building foreman and the balance in outside plant construction, retiring in June 1985. He was a Life Member of Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion, Lincoln
Post #1483, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Telephone Pioneers of America and a former member of Medina Lodge #336, F & AM. Survivors include three children: Larry (Pam) Myhill of Hampstead, N.C., Donna Myhill (Joy Gartland) of Rochester and Kirk (Lori) Myhill of Medina; four grandchildren, Katie (Johnny) Benson, Anne (Tyler) Krantz, Justin and Erika Myhill; four greatgrandchildren, Jalen and Kelcey Benson and Hailey and Hannah Krantz; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, on Sept. 17, 2007; and his brother, Preston Myhill, in February 1990. Friends attended his Memorial Service on Sat., Sept. 24, 2016, at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. Pastor Erik Olsen officiated and interment was in Boxwood Cemetery, where military honors were accorded by members of Lincoln Post #1483, VFW and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. Besides his father, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer (Erick) Mateo of Albion, and Michele Wolfe of Lockport; grandchildren, Jamelis, Ariana and Eva Mateo; six siblings: Darlene (Michael) Zeliff, Larry Wolfe, Bonnie (Thomas) Heck, all of Lyndonville, Mario John Ramos, Ernie Ramos, both of Florida, and Antonio Ramos of West Virginia; his former wife, Donna Wolfe of Medina; and several nieces and nephews. Medina StudentS Meet WreStling ChaMpion Two Medina students, Dominick and Logan Callara, had a chance to meet a wrestling legend recently; Jordan Burroughs, who is an Olympic Gold Medalist, World Champion and National Champion. Mr. Burroughs was recently at a wrestling clinic at the University at Buffalo (UB) where the two boys, who are in the modified wrestling program at Medina Clifford Wise Middle School and coached by Christian Held, had the chance to meet him and Dominick Callara, Jordan Burroughs and get his autograph. Logan Callara. Mr. Held says that the modified wrestling program is for seventh- and eighth-graders and has 20 athletes participating this year. “Modified wrestling teaches basic wrestling skills and the rules of wrestling. They compete in shorter matches, but follow all standard wrestling rules. Our main goal of our modified program is to prepare new and young wrestlers to compete at a varsity level when they get to high school.” Mr. Held invited all this athletes to attend the wrestling clinic at UB where Mr. Burroughs spent two hours showing wrestling moves and answering questions from the audience. Dominick was thrilled to have the champion sign his headgear. “It was a great clinic,” says Mr. Held. “It was an honor to learn new things from one of the greats in our sport. Most consider Mr. Burroughs to be the greatest wrestler in the USA right now.”

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking a few simple questions: 1) Ask the person to SMILE. 2) Ask the person to TALK AND SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE. i.e. It is sunny out today. 3) Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS. 4) Ask the person to STICK OuT HIS TONguE. If the tongue goes to one side or the other, that is a sign of a stroke. OTHER STROKE WARNING SIGNS • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don’t delay! On Sept. 16, 2016, at about 8:30 p.m., a southbound pickup truck struck and seriously injured a 14-yearold female. Reports from witnesses said that the pickup truck continued southbound and did not stop. Mercy Flight transported the victim to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. Approximately one hour later the operator of the hitand-run vehicle returned to the scene and turned himself in to Sheriff Deputies. Cody L. Buzard, 23, of 2559 Redman Rd., Hamlin, N.Y., was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. Buzard was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired By Drugs; Drove Across Hazard Markings; Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree; Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident; and Vehicular Assault 2nd Degree (Felony). Buzard was arraigned in the Town of Murray Court, and bail was set at $25,000 cash/$50,000 Bond. Buzard was scheduled to return to court at a later date. The Orleans County Sheriff’s office later spoke with a family member of the victim who reported that she was being treated for a broken femur, shattered pelvis, and a laceration to her spleen and will not begin to walk again for three months. Medina Police Department charged Paul W. Bearss Jr., 43, of Medina, on Sept. 16, 2016, with Criminal Mischief 4th Degree. Bearss was issued an appearance ticket and was scheduled to return Sept. 12 to Shelby Town Court. Medina Police Department charged Autumn L. Gonzalez, 23, of Rochester, on Sept. 18, 2016, with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Gonzalez was issued an appearance ticket and was scheduled to return Oct. 6 to Shelby Town Court. Medina Police Department charged a 17-year-old on Sept. 12, 2016, with Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree. Then youth was arraigned and was scheduled to return Oct. 6 to Shelby Town Court. Medina Police Department charged Jacob W. Grier, 18, of Medina, on Sept. 16, 2016, with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Grier was issued an appearance ticket and was scheduled to return Oct. 6 to Shelby Town Court.

Gold, silver and other precious metals have been used as currency throughout history. Paper money is a relatively recent method of payment, one that requires a certain level of faith among consumers. But that faith in paper currency has waned in recent years, and there are many people who are once again investing in gold and silver. Gold and silver still have a position of great financial importance in today’s market. With the value of a dollar fluctuating, precious metals may make a more stable investment. But investors who plan to investigate gold and silver should consider a few things before making their decision. • Look into bullion. Gold and silver bullion are made from 99 percent of the total metal. This helps stabilize the cost and is not dependent on some of the fees or price fluctuations resulting from coins issued by various government institutions. Keep in mind that investing in bullion can be expensive and will require a high initial investment outlay. Also, you will have to find a secure method of storing and protecting the metal. Also, bullion can be more difficult to acquire than other forms of gold and silver, so it may require more leg work for investing. • Purchase coins. One of the easiest and safest ways to invest in gold and silver is to buy coins. These will be minted from pure metals and are often issued through government-backed mints. Although gold coins aren’t widely circulated, silver coins contain enough whole silver mixed with other alloys to make them valuable. • Consider mutual funds. Rather than purchasing gold or silver outright, you can invest in mutual funds that then allocate a bulk of the fund’s investment into the purchase of gold or silver. This requires less knowledge of metal markets and also less work. However, it still enables you to invest in gold and silver. • Sell scrap jewelry. While you may not get the full value of the jewelry, you can take advantage of the rising rates of gold and silver by selling off items you may not use. Selling extra jewelry requires little work on the part of the seller. n

But people who are unsatisfied with plain old pumpkin pie can add something new to their repertoire this fall by cooking up the following recipe for “Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust,” courtesy of Lori Longbotham’s “Luscious Creamy Desserts” (Chronicle Books).

Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust Serves 8 to 10
Crust 1 1/2 cups gingersnap cookie crumbs 1/2 cup finely chopped hazelnuts 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1/4 cup sugar Filling 1 1/2 pounds cream cheese, at room temperature 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 cup solid-pack pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie mix) 1/2 cup créme fraîche, or sour cream 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Lightly butter an 8- or 81/2-inch springform pan. 2. To make the crust: Stir together all of the ingredients in a medium bowl until the crumbs are moistened. Press the mixture over the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Bake the crust for 10 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack. Increase the oven temperature to 425 F. 3. To make the filling: With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the cream cheese, brown sugar and granulated sugar in a large deep bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and then the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the flour and pumpkin pie spice and beat on low speed until just combined. Add the pumpkin purée, créme fraîche and vanilla, and beat until just combined. Pour the filling into the shell. 4. Place the cheesecake on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 250 F and continue baking for 1 hour. 5. Turn the oven off and let the cheesecake cool in the oven for 21/2 hours. Then transfer to a wire rack and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate, tightly covered, for at least 10 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, or for up to 2 days. 6. To serve, run a knife around the side of the cheesecake and remove the side of the pan. Serve slightly chilled or at room temperature, cut into thin wedges with a sharp knife dipped into hot water and wiped dry after each cut. n
