Catch the Spirit

February 20, 2013

Are you Sharpening the Saw? In the early ‘90’s, I read the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” It made an impression on me then, and I still find myself reflecting on this book even 20 years later. In his book, the author, Steven Covey, talks about habits that we can build into our lives that will bring about personal change and make us more effective. Covey’s 7th habit is “Sharpen the Saw.” He contends that in order to live lives that make a difference, we must take time and opportunity at self-renewal, to sharpen the saw, so to speak. A dull saw blade is not much good! Each year students and adults go to Mexico to build houses. One of the great unknowns before we get there is, ‘what kind of equipment will they provide?’ Sometimes we get a new miter saw with sharp blades, but other years, all the saw blades are dull, and the little hardware store in this small Mexican town is far away! What a chore it is to work with dull blades! I think about this 7th habit as we find ourselves in the Lenten season, the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter. This season provides us with a good time and excuse to ‘sharpen the saw.’ One way we can be renewed is through making sure we are observing a Sabbath. Maybe your Sabbath is on Sunday, or maybe on another day. Or, maybe we don’t think we can give a whole day, but what about part of a day? Whatever your Sabbath may be, it’s important that we take time to step out of the rat race and be with God, be with family and friends, and just ‘be.’ Jesus had this pattern to his life – ministry, then prayer and rest. (See Mark 1) It takes commitment and intention, but it’s important and worth it (after all, it’s one of the Ten Commandments!). Personal journaling, reflection and prayer are important. So is exercise, smart nutrition (like giving up soda or chocolate) and reading a good book. Sabbath can take many forms, but the bottom line to keeping the Sabbath is making room and time to connect with God, and allow Him to remind us what’s important about ourselves, our lives, and our priorities. What a valuable Lenten commitment, to make a decision to keep the Sabbath, allowing God to sharpen our “blades” and renew us in powerful ways! God bless you on this road to Easter!

Celebrate Recovery at Central Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program that helps us deal with life’s “hurts, habits, and hangups.” The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the eight recovery principles found in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-11) and the Christ-centered 12 steps. Central is proud to offer this program on Thursday evenings in the Student Ministries Building beginning March 7th. Another component to the Celebrate Recovery program is the weekly Step Study. These genderspecific groups are already meeting each week to go deeper into the 12 steps and 8 recovery principles. Womens’ groups are available at 12:30 p.m. in CAC Sideroom 5, and 6:30 p.m. in SMB 201, and men’s groups meet at 12:30 p.m. in CAC Sideroom 4, and 6:30 p.m. in SMB 210. For more information about the Celebrate Recovery program, please contact Rev. Carl Palmer at 442-1806, or [email protected], or you may visit www.celebraterecovery.com.

Christ in the Passover God commanded it. Israel celebrated it. Jesus fulfilled it. Jesus’ Last Supper was actually a Jewish Passover. Jews for Jesus will re-create the traditional Passover service and explain how it foreshadowed Jesus’ death and resurrection in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover” at Central on Sunday, March 24th, at 5:00 p.m. in the Great Hall. You’ll gain wonderful insights on how the pieces of God’s plan of salvation fit together, and you’ll remember this visual display of the Passover pageantry for years to come. Join us for Christ in the Passover from Egypt to Calvary to what what it means for us today. No registration is required and there is no cost to attend. Childcare will be provided. Easter Nursery Volunteers Needed Want to help make Christ Central to Life for someone this Easter season? Consider serving in the nursery during the 9:40 hour on Easter Sunday. This could be a great Easter service opportunity for families! Contact Amber Hutson at 479-442-1826, or [email protected].
