Catch the Spirit

January 23, 2013

I read a great book over Christmas that I’d like to share with you. Now stay with me on this…although Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes was purchased for our two year old grandson, I found a profound message in it and one I needed to hear. And surprisingly, it came from a four-legged feline! Here’s how the story goes… Pete, the cat, goes out for a walk one day in his brand new white shoes. He loves his shoes and sings a special song about them as he goes along his way. But as Pete walks, he experiences a few misfortunes that alter the appearance of his white shoes. And as a result, his beloved shoes change from white to red to blue to brown to WET. What does Pete do? After each mishap, Pete keeps strolling along and singing his song because as Pete knew, “it is all good.” Pete was content no matter what. In adult terms, “life” happens to Pete. He had no idea when starting out for his walk, what he would experience along the way. Sound familiar? We walk along our way in life just singing our song when suddenly events occur we didn’t anticipate. “Life” happens. Clouds appear, rain occurs, and sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of a relentless storm. Our walk can falter and our song start to dwindle. We all long for the absence of problems in our lives. Jesus, however, promises us something else…in this world we will have trouble. We never know what the day may bring. But the good news is—we have Jesus by our side never leaving us or forsaking us. He has overcome the world! And someday, He promises to give us an eternity of problem-free living. He simply asks us to trust Him as we walk along our way and to look to Him each day for the guidance and strength needed. As I look ahead to 2013, I hope to take a different view of trouble. I hope to be more like Pete…to be thankful and content no matter what. Because when I focus on Jesus and what He is reserving for me someday, it is all good! May you know the peace of Jesus this year and keep on strolling along and singing your song no matter what the day may bring!

Celebrate Recovery at Central Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program that helps us deal with life’s “hurts, habits, and hangups.” The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the eight recovery principles found in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-11) and the Christ-centered 12 steps. Central is proud to offer this program on Thursday evenings in the Student Ministries Building beginning March 7th. Another component to the Celebrate Recovery program is the weekly Step Study. These gender-specific groups meet each week to go deeper into the 12 steps and 8 recovery principles. Central will begin the Step Study portion of Celebrate Recovery on January 24th with womens’ groups available at 12:30 p.m. in CAC Sideroom 5, and 6:30 p.m. in SMB 201, and men’s groups meeting at 1:00 p.m. in CAC Sideroom 4, and 6:30 p.m. in SMB 210. Park Friendly It has come to our attention that a number of our older adults are struggling to find ample close parking on Sunday mornings which is resulting in challenges for them to be able to attend worship. If you are able bodied and regularly park in our surface parking lot, we would ask that you consider using the parking deck or parking at Auto Zone or Washington Elementary school in order to create more parking in our surface parking lot for our older adults. We appreciate your help with this. Choir Opportunities! It’s a new year! If you enjoy praising God through music, you are invited to check out the Sanctuary and/ or Senior Saints Choirs.
