Pastoral Search Process Update Change can be difficult, even painful at times. The more comfortable or content we are, the more challenging even relatively minor changes can be. Undoubtedly, Central Presbyterian Church is currently passing through a season of change, and one that may be causing anxiety or concern for some, sadness and a sense of loss for others. Despite these very real feelings, change can also bring a sense of excitement, adventure, and even opportunity. It is with this realization that we embrace and plan for what lies ahead in the coming months. Whether we anticipated them or not, we can take refuge in knowing the changes to Central’s pastoral staff are all part of God’s design. He continues to use Central in mighty and miraculous ways, and as a means of sharing the Gospel to countless people locally, nationally, and around the world. The Lord has been faithful to our congregation throughout our history, and He will remain so. As we prepare for the coming departure of our Senior Pastor, Dan Doriani, Central’s Elders have begun laying the foundation to help ease those feelings of concern while making sure as a church we continue to carry out our mission. In the early Fall, the Session will call a meeting for the congregation to select the Pastoral Search Committee. When this congregational

C.S. Lewis on Change “Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing....But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

committee is selected, the formal search will begin. Between now and then, the Session has formed a Transition Team to serve the congregation in preparation for that effort. This team consists of nine members representing the congregation, the Session, and the staff: Bob Burns, Hillary Coffee, Stacy Fitzgerald, Mark Hutton, David Klotz, Ed Koehler, Linda Lockwood, Brian Middendorf, and Laura Rebbe. The Transition Team has been charged with three core responsibilities: 1. To serve the congregation, session, and staff by lending leadership, resources, and expertise to this transitionary period. The Transition Team will play a vital role as our church prepares for the formation of a search committee and formally launches our search for a new senior pastor. 2. To facilitate communication, improve transparency, and ensure effective processes during this transitional period. In short, the Transition Team is charged with making sure each group - the congregation, the session, and our staff - is heard and can fulfill their roles well. 3. To assure proper alignment with the mission, vision, values, and goals of Central Presbyterian Church. Central will not go into a “holding pattern” while we wait for a new pastor, and the Transition Team will work with each of our ministries to ensure we continue to work together for the good of our church and the spreading of the Gospel. The Transition Team will begin with an initial sixmonth time-frame for their work. Should the Session consider it helpful, the term for the Transition Team may be extended. It is the hope and prayer of the Session that this initiative will be a valuable step forward for Central.

Transition Q & A Q: Why do we need a Transition Team? A: The purpose of the Transition Team is to serve the congregation, the Session, and the church’s staff as a resource, helping to prepare and equip each group for the search process, while ensuring the voice of each group is heard. Q: Is the Transition Team the same as the Search Committee? A: No. The Search Committee is selected by the congregation. The Session will call a meeting in the early Fall for this purpose. Q: Who decides which names are on the slate of candidates for the Search Committee? A: The Evangelical Presbyterian Church “Book of Order” says the Session may identify a slate of candidates for the Search Committee of a Pastor. All persons slated will be consulted before the congregational meeting to confirm they are willing and able if selected. Q: Will the congregation have the opportunity to submit names for the slate of candidates for the Search Committee? A: Absolutely! We anticipate that there will be an “open period” prior to the congregational meeting for congregation to review the suggested slate from the Session, and, if desired, nominate additional persons. It will be strongly encouraged that any additional recommendations be vetted in advance with the person to gauge their interest and availability. Q: When will the actual search process begin? A: The formal search for a new senior pastor will begin once the Search Committee has been formed.

Planning for the second annual Labor of Love 5K race and 1-mile fun run/walk to raise money and awareness for the Micah Project is well under way. Last year’s event was super successful, with more than 350 people participating, including Michael Miller and several Micah grads. More than $13,000 was raised for the Micah Project. Our goal this year is 500 participants!

Thank you for the great feedback so far on the Central Pres app for iPhone, iPad, and Android! This new offering is designed to help keep you up to date, give easy access to recent sermons optimized for delivery on a mobile device, and enable you to have Scripture at your fingertips, including an audio Bible option. The app is free, easy to download, and provides a great tool for sharing the Gospel with friends and family.

This fun, family-friendly event will be on September 2, 2013 at Tower Grove Park. Race time is 8 a.m. The race will be professionally chip-timed by Big River Running Co., and runners of all abilities as well as walkers will enjoy the flat, shady course. For the success of the event, we rely upon generous donations from individuals and businesses. Would you consider supporting the Labor of Love event this year? If interested, please email Tiffanie Upshaw, race director and Micah board member ([email protected]). Your support truly makes a difference. “HEY! What are those things?” Those weird black and white squares are “QR Codes” (short for "Quick Response"), a type of matrix “barcode.” There are a variety of scanner applications which can be downloaded to a smartphone, enabling the phone’s camera to operate as a scanner. The QR Code contains data, such as a web link, which can be read by the scanner.

Nominations for Church Officers It is once again time to nominate elders, deacons, and members of the Officer Nominating Committee of the Congregation (ONCC), and the ONCC needs your input! Please prayerfully consider the men God would have the ONCC consider for officers of Central Presbyterian Church and the men and women the Lord would have serve on the ONCC. For guidance, please read 1 Timothy 3: 1-13, 1 Peter 5: 1-3, and Acts 6: 1-6. Nomination forms and collection boxes can be found in the narthex by the Hanley Road entrance, outside the choir room, on the bulletin board outside Fellowship Hall, and at the reception desk on the third floor. Additionally, forms may be downloaded from our website (www.centralpres.com/about/ officers/).
