Book Review Understanding Cerebral Palsy: a guide for parents and professionals By Marion Stanton, 2012 Jessica Kingsley Publishers ISBN 9781849050609 The author of this book is a special needs teacher and mother of a child with Cerebral Palsy. The book is very thorough, covering all types of CP from the very mild to the most severe and discussing a full range of aspects from diagnosis, through daily care, to adult life. The author speaks to parents on their level, telling it like it is, being supportive and caring and discussing the kinds of questions that parents of a child with CP want to know the answer to. Reading it feels like having a friend there in the room with you, taking you through everything step by step. There is a very good chapter on Alternatives to Verbal Communication which discusses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in great depth from the low-tech to the specialist communication aids. This is one of the best books supporting parents of children with CP that I have seen and well worth a read. Kevin Thinks ...about outer space, confusing expressions and the perfectly logical world of Asperger Syndrome. By Gail Watts, 2012. Jessica Kingsley Publishers, ISBN 9781849052924

Childre n’s book review

Kevin is a boy with Asperger Syndrome, he has many traits that are common in children with the condition. He has an inability and lack of desire to interact with his peers and is unable to interpret or appreciate social cues, facial expressions or tones in people’s voices. Kevin also has sensory sensitivity to light, noise and scratchy clothes. Many people with Asperger’s have a ‘special’ interest and Kevin loves ‘outer space’, to the exclusion of everything else. Kevin takes everything that is said to him literally and does not understand sarcasm or when people are only teasing. Join Kevin on a journey of insight into the world of a child with Asperger Syndrome.
