Chandler Chamber News April 2014

Let the Chandler

Chamber of Commerce help your business bloom this spring

President's Letter Terri Kimble

S

pring is here! I hope the beginning of your Spring proves to be an amazing time of prosperity for your personal business ventures. Last month brought the ostriches. The 26th Annual Ostrich Festival was a great success. To those that came out to support one of Chandler’s biggest events of the year, I can’t thank all of you enough. This festival helps the Chandler Chamber of Commerce host insightful networking events throughout the year, like the Women In Business program. In mid-March, we had another amazing Women In Business event with Marcy Maslov, Chief Integrity Builder. She discussed ethics in the workplace and how it can affect a business financially. We also had a number of fantastic ribbon cuttings showcasing new businesses in the area. I truly believe we are stronger as people and stronger as businesses when we unite to support our fellows. Thank you to those who attended our ribbon cutting events this month, your support can empower a new business for great success. Near the end of the month, we welcomed members to stay informed in the economy of Chandler with our Economic Update Series Luncheon. Thank you to both Barry Broome and Christine Mackay for taking time out to ensure this event was beneficial to all who attended.

2 Chandler Chamber April 2014

We also held our Coffee with the Mayor in March. If you haven’t already, I strongly urge you as a member and resident of Chandler to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to let your voice be heard This past month’s edition of Coffee with the Mayor proved to be amazing again as those who attended were able to discuss ideas and business issues with our Mayor. As we move into the month of April, keep an eye on our event calendar. It’s the best way to stay informed on what is going on at the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. Mark dates down in your calendar, so you don’t forget! Remember, always take full advantage of the resources and help that we offer here at the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. It is our pleasure to be able to provide our members with the best possible means of succeeding in their business ventures. Our Small Business Development Center Academy Classes and Small Business Counseling Sessions are great resources for all of our members. Thank you for your continued relationship with the Chamber. Best of luck in the Spring!

Mayor's Letter Mayor Jay Tibshraeny City of Chandler

I

want to thank the many Chandler businesses taking part in my “Health Connect” Expo, on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Tumbleweed Recreation Center, located at Tumbleweed Park (the southwest corner of McQueen and Germann roads). The Chandler business community has plenty to offer in terms of wellness and fitness, and my “Health Connect” initiative compliments that by connecting residents with resources to make sure they also have good mental health, and strong finances. The Tumbleweed Recreation Center will buzz with demonstrations, speakers, and close to 30 local nonprofit organizations and retailers. Demonstrations include cooking, Zumba and other dance work-outs and more. Even if you are not a vendor at the event, I hope you will come out and enjoy the morning with us. There will also be plenty of giveaways and best of all, the event is free!

For more details you can go to www. chandleraz.gov/connect. The Expo is co-sponsored by our good friends at Dignity Health, and Chandler Regional Medical Center. The Recreation Center is located at 745 E. Germann Road within Tumbleweed Park.. Thanks also to all the folks who came out for our “Coffee with the Mayor” event in late March. Nearly 60 people packed the Chamber offices – a record crowd for these meetings. And we had some great discussion that ranged from the City’s future transportation plans, to an update on downtown Chandler, and even the future Tesla plant came up. These are great forums for the Chamber of Commerce membership to learn a little more about what is going on in the community. But it is also a chance for me, a small business owner by trade, to hear what is on your mind. The next meeting is slated for Tuesday, May 20, at the Chamber office. I hope to see you there. For more news on our community, you can follow me on Twitter: @jaytibshraeny.

Your business partner in workers compensation insurance & workplace safety

It’s Heating Up: The Risk of Heat Stress for Outdoor Workers As temperatures in Arizona continue to rise toward the three-digit mark, as they do every year at this time, employers may want to remember to take time and address the potential risk of heat stress to their outdoor workers. Heat stress can occur when employees work in high temperatures that may interrupt the body’s ability to maintain a safe internal body temperature, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). While the body usually sweats to cool off, working in areas that contain high temperatures or are near radiant heat sources may cause employees to lose this ability. Symptoms of heat stress may reduce productivity and result in dangerous health effects – and even death. In Arizona, heat-related deaths are recorded every summer. Hazards surrounding heat-related illnesses may make employers liable for workers compensation claims and fines for violations in the workplace. Industries where workers may be at risk include the agriculture, construction, utility and manufacturing sectors. “If the body cannot get rid of excess heat, it will store it,” OSHA says in describing the toll of heat stress. “When this happens, the body’s core temperature rises and the heart rate increases. As the body continues to store heat, the person begins to lose concentration and has difficulty focusing on a task, may become irritable or sick, and often loses the desire to drink.” Excessive exposure to heat can result in heat-related illnesses. If not treated as they arise, the symptoms may become worse, eventually leading to heat exhaustion and the potentially lethal stage of heat stress known as heat stroke, which requires immediate medical attention. Common symptoms associated with heat-related illnesses include: • Nausea • Heavy sweating • Muscle cramps • Dizziness, confusion • Clammy, moist skin • Pale or flushed complexion • Fast and shallow breathing • Slightly elevated body temperature Exposure to heat also may increase the risk of injuries because of sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, dizziness and burns from hot surfaces or steam. Should employees begin to show signs of heat stress, take these actions: • Place them in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area to rest. • Help them drink plenty of water or other cool, non-caffeinated or nonalcoholic beverages. • If possible, have them take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath. For more information, go to Copperpoint.com to order our heat-related safety cards, or watch our SafetyNet video on heat safety. 3030 N 3rd Street Phoenix, AZ 85012
