Our 5th Annual Business Expo was a huge success! A special thank you to the Valley Shore YMCA for allowing us to turn the gym into a “showcase” of our local businesses. The evening offered music, food, and refreshments while members networked with one another. We also had a number of local residents drop by and gather information from the exhibitors. Thank you to all who participated and those who donated raffle prizes.

—SHOP LOCAL— The Shop-Local movement has grown tremendously over the last few years. With American Express behind the “Shop Small” campaign, Small Business Saturday has become a recognizable brand on main streets across the country. But the Shop-Local movement is not all that new—for the past decade, independent businesses have banded together to urge local consumers to spend more of their dollars closer to home. Proponents say doing so helps build vibrant local economies by keeping money circulating in the area rather than elsewhere.

—TOP REASONS TO BUY LOCAL— BUILD COMMUNITY! The casual encounters you enjoy at neighborhood businesses and the public spaces around them build relationships and community. They're the ultimate social networking sites! STRENGTHEN YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY! Each dollar you spend at independent businesses returns 3 times more money to your local economy than one spent at a chain (hundreds of times more than online purchases). SHAPE OUR CHARACTER! Independent businesses help give your community its distinct personality.

And some business owners say that buy-local efforts have even helped insulate them from the worst of the economic downturn. To learn how your business can participate in the “Small Business” campaign, visit www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shopsmall/ for ideas and free resources. You can even create custom signs and online marketing materials, like the graphic at right.

CREATE A HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT! Independent businesses are people-sized and typically consume less land, carry more locally-made products, locate closer to residents and create less traffic and air pollution. LOWER TAXES! More efficient land use and more central locations mean local businesses put less demand on our roads, sewers, and safety services. They also generate more tax revenue per sales dollar. Letter from our Chamber Vice President Dear Chamber Members, I hope everyone is enjoying this gorgeous fall! Last night the Business Expo was held at the YMCA and it was a fantastic event! Special thanks to Judy, Karen, Meryl, Elaine Beame and the committee, the YMCA and all the sponsors and volunteers! While at the Expo I was able to speak with a number of our members and business owners. Here are some of their thoughts regarding their businesses, the Chamber & the Expo. Suzie Beckman, OS Economic Development Director, feels "the Chamber is a great way for her to connect with businesses to see how we can continue to insure their continued success in Old Saybrook." She mentioned that there is some loan money available from the Middlesex County Revitalization Commission for business owners looking to expand, Contact her at [email protected] for more info. Trish Maselli, Clear Cut Bookkeeping Services, Inc. and Qivana Representatiive, shared "the Chamber is a great way to network, I've been a member for about four years and it has always paid for itself." Ruth & Colin Cantalupo, Colin's Tux Shop, first time exhibitors, have recently renovated their store and added a fantastic new men's clothing line. They extended an invitation to the local businessmen to "make

sure they come see us, we love to help you dress for success!" Kati Hensel, Development Director, Middlesex United Way was at the Expo to share information regarding two affinity groups, the Women's Initiative & Young Leaders Society, they are looking to expand their membership to meet the needs of the shoreline community. To contact Kati, you can email her at: [email protected] Kathy Callinan, Essex Savings Bank Branch Manager/ AVP, thought that "the Expo had a nice cross section of businesses in the area and feels that the Chamber communicates well with members (emails, chamber connections, etc.) and you don't have to go to everything, they know how busy the business person is." David M. Royston, Attorney, Dzialo, Pickett & Allen, P.C., shared that they are a general practice law firm with offices in Middletown and Old Saybrook, areas of expertise include personal injury, workmen's compensation, land use, probate/ estates, commercial and residential real estate and more. Bob Potter, SCORE, wants business owners to know that SCORE is the "best kept secret no longer! Contact Score to meet with someone from SCORE and let them help you grow your business!"

From the Desk of the Executive Director

Our 5th Annual Business Showcase was a huge success with nearly 50 businesses exhibiting. A big thank you to Elaine Beame, Beame Realty, Showcase Chair, and her committee: Kara Ganssle, POP Weight Loss, Shannon Timme, Harbor News, Vicky O’Neil and Carol Green, Apple Rehab Saybrook and Chris Pallatto, Valley Shore YMCA for once again producing a terrific event. Many good connections were made and the energy in the room was palpable. Thank you to all who attended and helped make this event a success. Thank you to all of you that have renewed your Chamber Membership. For those that haven’t yet – beware! Renewal could result in increased business. Please renew your membership today.

Have you joined us for one of our Monthly Membership Meetings? If you have, you know the success of this structured meeting. If you haven’t you don’t know what your missing. One new attendee at our October meeting (a member who traveled from East Haven to join us at 8am) shared with us that he was hesitant to come because he didn’t think he’d get much out of it. To his surprise and our delight he told us how wrong he was! He now wants to attend all meetings in the future! Please join us, share your business, make new contacts and potentially gain new customers. You won’t regret it. Next MMM is Wednesday November 19th 8-9am at

Gladeview Rehabilitation and Health Care.

It’s almost Annual Meeting and Silent Auction time! Thursday December 4th – 6pm at Saybrook Point Inn we will be celebrating another year at the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce. It’s hard to believe sometimes how fast time goes. We will also be changing the format this year. A meeting will be held at 6pm followed by the silent auction and cocktail reception. I hope you enjoy the new format – it will provide more opportunity to meet other members and build your network. Why not consider submitting a nomination for our 2014 Annual Awards. These will be presented at the Annual Meeting. It’s always a pleasure to recognize members who have gone above and beyond in their business, organization or volunteer service. Awards are presented to Business of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Rookie of the Year. If you know of a member who fits any of these categories, don’t keep it to yourself! More details can be found on our website. I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you are able to take time to enjoy it with family and friends. All the best,

Judy

Member Spotlight

Wendy Reider, Wendy Rieder Designs 334 Main Street, Old Saybrook I have two businesses, Interior Design and Clothing Consultant. In both businesses, I endeavor to make my customers happier in their personal environments by improving the way they feel about themselves and the spaces they live in and/ or work in. I try to understand their needs & answer them in the most expedient and satisfactory way. What I love most about my work is collaborating with my clients to improve their lives and make them happier in their surroundings or in their own skin. It is very rewarding to build relationships of trust that last for years based on high quality products & service. The Chamber offers a number of events that are created to get business people together. The monthly membership meetings and the women in business meetings are two of my favorites, but I also appreciate the Home Based Business gatherings and the special meetings offering technical information and support. I believe success is derived from genuine caring about what I do and caring for those I try to help by listening carefully, learning continually and keeping an open mind. The Chamber member featured in our Member spotlight is randomly selected at our Monthly Membership Meeting. Our next meeting is November 19th , 8am at Gladeview Healthcare! Register online or call 860 388-3266 to register.
