Chamber Hosts Eggs and Issues Jeff Whitehead Director, EKCEP

Community leaders discuss regional workforce development.

The Chamber hosted their membership breakfast, Eggs and Issues, on October 14. This event is dedicated to education and networking. The event provides a great opportunity for members, new and existing, to network with other attendees and to become more informed on the selected ‘issue’ that is affecting the region by hearing experts from the field. The issue discussed at the October Eggs and Issues was regional workforce development with Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Director of College Relations, Josh Ball, and Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program’s Executive Director, Jeff Whitehead. Ball spoke on what BSCTC is doing and will do to improve the regional workforce. Big Sandy is participating in the Build Smart program, which is a public-private partnership to provide funding for the top capital project at each Kentucky Community and Technical College. BSCTC’s top capital project is the construction and expansion of the Pikeville Campus. Ball announced that the planning phase is underway to expand the building’s footprint to over 120,000 4 | BUSINESS CALL

square feet. Renovations include a new parking structure that will not only serve the students but the city of Pikeville as well. The expansion of the campus will also allow an expansion of existing programs and the opportunity to create new ones for students. Ball finds this endeavor imperative in helping the regional workforce. “If we do not educate and plan for the students of tomorrow, then we will not have a future,” Ball said. Whitehead presented data on the state of the region’s workforce and what EKCEP is doing to help. Although unemployment rates were down in August 2014, there were 11,600 fewer people working compared to August of 2013. Whitehead explained what the solution of this problem should be and how regional organizations can participate in developing a qualified workforce to grow our economy. “We can’t just try harder,” Whitehead said. “We have got to stay focused on job creation and workforce development. It has to be done differently in eastern Kentucky than anywhere else because our problems are unique.” His suggestions for improving job creation and workforce development

Joshua Ball Director of College Relations, BSCTC

were to create better workforce intelligence, continue to work towards partnering with industry, and work and develop community-based collaborative innovations. Eggs and Issues was presented by Life Care Centers of America’s Mountain View Health Care Center with RE/MAX Legacy Group as the small business sponsor. It was hosted at Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Pikeville Campus. For more information on BSCTC’s expansion visit their website at www.bigsandy.kctcs. edu. First class of Patton Leadership Institute with Angie Woodoward (far right).

Opening Retreat at Jenny Wiley State Park The Patton Leadership Institute’s inaugural class met this month for their first of nine monthly professional development sessions. Twenty-four community and business leaders took part in the two-day opening overnight retreat at the Jenny Wiley State Park. The class’ opening session was full of leadership development activities and seminars to help the professionals get to know themselves as leaders and each other. Angie Woodward led team building activities, personality assessments and leadership seminars throughout the two days. Woodward is currently directing the statewide initiative: Kentucky Community of Sharing, a project using the AssetBased Community Development process to discover skills, talents and gifts of local residents in communities across the Commonwealth. The class had a roundtable discussion with Northern Kentucky University President, Geoffrey Mearns. Mearns shared

with the group his career of leadership roles and lessons he has learned from working as a federal prosecutor, law school dean and professor, senior vice president of academic affairs and provost, and now NKU president. Mearns discussed how education has played a vital role in his career and how critical an educated workforce is to moving Kentucky and the nation forward. The class also received an overview of Jenny Wiley State Park and its impact on the local economy by Park Manager, Julian Slone. Members of PLI were challenged by the retreat and excited for the sessions to come. “I have been fortunate enough in my job to work with leaders who have a vision for what we can achieve and who know how to put that vision into actions that move our region forward. What I see in the inaugural class of the Patton Leadership Institute is a group of leaders who are ready to pick up the mantle of progress and carry it on into the future. I am hum-

bled to be a part of it,” PLI Member and Administrator of Operations for the City of Pikeville, Sean Cochran, said. Patton Leadership Institute began this year as a restructure of the Chamber’s leadership program with an updated curriculum and mission. The program was named after Gov. Paul and Judi Patton to recognize their leadership and impact in not only our region but the entire state of Kentucky. It is designed to find, develop and educate emerging talent from throughout the Chamber’s eight-county footprint about regional differences, opportunities and challenges. The program hosts nine sessions between October and July with each session focusing on the different resources eastern Kentucky possesses and how each community contributes to the whole of the region. Alongside each session’s focal topic, PLI’s curriculum focuses on leadership professional development topics specific to emerging leaders seeking meaningful growth needed to advance both professionally and personally. They meet and network with current regional community and business leaders, who discuss topics specific to PLI’s curriculum. PLI is sponsored by Appalachian Wireless, Food City, and the University of Pikeville. For more information on the Patton Leadership Institute, visit www. pattonli.org. BUSINESS CALL | 5
