Chapter 6: Energy Section 1: Energy Changes

What is Energy? The word ENERGY means ACTIVE in Greek.

IMPORTANT!!!! need to know

I- Energy is the ability to cause change

**II- Energy can be transferred from one object to another When you push a chair, your energy is being transferred to the chair so you can move the chair.

**III- Energy can be transformed from one form into another. EX: chemical to kinetic (movement) Eat – chemical energy from your food will be transformed into energy that will allow you to move and do several things. Kinetic Energy is movement energy

**IV- The law of Conservation of Energy

ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS: • An energy transformation occurs when one type of energy turns into another. • These transformations happen constantly, around us and also inside our bodies.

• Page 164 – Read “Food is Chemical Energy”

Kinetic x Potential • Energy comes in different forms **All types of energy can be classified into: Kinetic or Potential

Kinetic Energy *Is the energy that an object has, due to its motion. *Kinetic energy depends on the mass and the speed of the object. • Higher speed – more Kinetic Energy • Bigger the mass of a moving object – more kinetic energy.

Transferring Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy can be transferred from one object to another when they collide.

The energy to drop the dominoes is coming from the finger. After the last domino, the energy will be absorbed by the table.

• A car in motion that hits a car that is parked, will transfer kinetic energy to the parked car, that will move.

Potential Energy Objects at rest have energy too!!!!

*Potential energy is energy that is stored in an object. *It depends on the object’s position. When you lift an object, you transfer kinetic energy to this object and you increase its potential energy You are also transforming kinetic energy into potential energy

• Potential energy can be transferred into kinetic energy Fig 7 page 166

When an object falls Potential Energy turns into kinetic energy.

When the potential energy is at its maximum, the kinetic energy is at its Minimum - see fig 8 page 167
