Associate Editors As noted in my July 1985 editorial, a number of changes have been made this year to maintain and, if possible, to improve the quality of the published research contributions to our JOURNAL. Although ANALYT1CAL.CHEMISTRY is recognized as the premier journal in our field, there is increased competition for good manuscripts from an everexpanding number of specialty journals. This dictates an increased effort to persuade authors to contribute their strongest research results to our JOURNAL.

A special effort has already been put forth by the Washington editorial staff to improve the peer review system so that authors can count on an early» carefully considered publication decision as well as guidelines to help in carrying out any required revision. Although this program has been successful, it is only a prelude to a major change that I am pleased to announce now. We are establishing for the first time in the 56-year history of our JOURNAL a number of external associate editorships to be filled by internationally recognized scientists. Their main function will be to provide further expertise in decisions regarding the peer review of research manuscripts. We feel that this will improve the peer review system and encourage submission of the best papers. . ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY is a core journal covering a wide variety of specialties, so it is necessary to. provide concomitant diversity of editorial expertise. Because a major portion of our manuscripts fall into the general areas of spectroscopy, separations, and electroanalytical chemistry, we are appointing the following Associate Editors for peer review: Professor Fred Lytle of Purdue University, Professor Klaus Biemann of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Georges Guiochon of Georgetown University, and Professor Ted Kuwana of the University of Kansas. They are highly respected by the analytical community and are prepared to make the objective editorial decisions necessary to guarantee the continued excellence of our JOURNAL. They will work closely with the Washington editorial staff to maintain our rapid publication record and uniform standards for the peer review process. We are encouraging our new Associate Editors to address the challenge of attracting excellent fundamental research papers from authors who would not normally think of ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY as the most appropriate forum for their work. We are enthusiastic about the addition of these new members of our team and anticipate that our authors will welcome this new effort.
