*LITANY One: All: One: All: One:

Bruce Metcalfe Let us gather to worship our God, the Eternal One, who shepherds the generations. A thousand years in God’s sight are like a watch in the night. But our span of life is soon past. We flourish and we fade. Let us live with awareness of the preciousness of every moment. Trusting in God’s eternal grace, let us learn to invest the gift of time we are granted with wisdom and faithfulness. Let us pray.

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Ancient of Days, your time is limitless, but our days are few. Our limits and our inexperience can lure us toward foolishness. How can we, a short-sighted people, distinguish fruitful work from wasted effort? Help us to glimpse the breadth of your perspective and order our lives accordingly. Keep us from narrow self-absorption. Expand our vision. Enlarge our hearts. Grant us wisdom, that the days of our lives might be well-spent. Amen. *GLORIA

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS (Sanctuary)

Douglas W. Johnson

One: Gracious God, bless these backpacks and the children and youth who carry them as they begin another school year. Give them peace when they feel nervous, a friend when they feel lonely, focus when they feel distracted, and energy when they feel tired. All: And bless those in the ministry of teaching future generations. As educators embark on a new school year, grant them energy, creativity, patience, and discernment as they engage and challenge their students. One: Be ever-present with them in the classroom, on the school bus, on the playground, and at home, and may they feel your loving care in all they do. All: May the cup they receive be a reminder that this congregation embraces their call to teaching and learning and surrounds them with love and care as well. Amen. C3 CHILDREN’S CHOIR ANTHEM (Sanctuary)

“To Music” arr. Betty Bertaux

C3 Choir

Lift every voice to music, to Love’s expression sing; Let music live in mind and heart, let joy and laughter ring! From valleys and from hilltops, from sea to shining sea, Let earth resound with music, and life the richer be. For through this gift to Humankind we each to all belong; It’s music that has joined us in life’s sweet mastersong.

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD READING FROM THE EPISTLES

Elaine A. Matthes

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today. Romans 13:11b-14 … you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. 11b

RESPONSE One: Time quickly passes, drawing us ever closer to God. All: May our lives demonstrate our readiness for the dawn.

RESIGNATION

Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 1For

everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. RESPONSE One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God! SERMON
