Choices: To Honor or Harden Against God? 1 Samuel 5 and 6

Pew Bible Page 145 Textual Study Chapter 5: The Power of God Bearing the Ark like a trophy of conquest the Philistines took it first to the temple of Dagon at Ashdod, laying it at Dagon’s feet. The next morning Dagon lay prostrate “before the Ark.” It was uprighted, but the following day Dagon again lay in submission, with __________ and _____________ broken off. The Lord sent a plague on the Philistines which was possibly carried by mice or rats and resulted in large _______________ on their bodies. In complete despair they sent the Ark to Gath, resulting in the same disaster. Sending it to Ekron, where the plague had preceded the Ark, they quickly rejected it, ultimately determining to send it back to its own land. Chapter 6: The Holiness and Response to God The Philistine lords asked a number of questions about the God of Israel. The accounts of God were known, so they chose to honor God and test whether their circumstances were mere chance or God’s ______________. The Israelites were overjoyed to see the Ark. But they disobeyed God’s commands resulting in the death of some. The Ark was moved again to Kiriath-Jearim, about 10 miles from Jerusalem. Applications The Bible is the story of God’s dealings with humanity from the beginning. Jesus made clear He was not one way, but He was _________ _________! Acts 4:12; John 14:6; I Timothy 2:5; John 3:18 For believers, obedience is better than works. Believers make ____________________ every day that either honor God or harden our hearts against Him. I Samuel 15:22; I John 1:7; Romans 6:16; John 14:15 Sin has consequences and can ultimately lead to death. I Corinthians 5:5; Acts 5:1-11; James 5:19-20; I Corinthians 11:27-30; I John 5:16-18

Next Sunday we will celebrate the service of our deacons as we introduce those deacons who have twenty-five or more years of continuous service to our congregation and those deacons who now serve as Deacon Emeritus. We are grateful to these men and their families and appreciate their leadership and service in our church. A luncheon for the deacons and their families in the Family Life Center will follow the late service next Sunday.

If you are interested in serving during FaithKidZ week (June 17-21) please email Jo Ann Larimore at [email protected] or talk to Jeff White, Beth Edfeldt or Doug Burton about your interest. There are many areas in which to serve during this week long event for children in our community.

Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall we will enjoy a Night of Praise and Worship that will include former Minister of Adult Discipleship Darrell Brown (who is now Director of the Wichita-Archer-Clay Baptist Association) and youth intern Tyler McMurry sharing concerning their ministry and what God is teaching them as they serve Him. It will be a great night of music and testimony that will replace all 6:30 p.m. age-group activities for this one week (preschool care through age 1 provided).

Any individual licensed to carry a concealed weapon is asked to register with the Administration Office (692-4220 or [email protected]) if you plan to carry while on the church campus. Our church knows that open-carry handguns are legal in Texas, but in order to avoid distractions, as a courtesy to our church, we ask that you please conceal your weapon. Thank you for your cooperation.
