CHURCH 101: Worship & the Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:1-3 Pastor Jason Dennett’s notes

NKJV - "Now concerning spiritual [gifts], brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." NLT - "Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don't want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit." "Now concerning spiritual [gifts], brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: • "pneumatikon" - meaning "spirituals, spiritual action/energy, manifestations of spiritual power." • Paul doesn't want us to be "ignorant"; this is the Greek word "ἀγνοέω" or "agnoeō" meaning "to be without knowledge, to be without understanding." The apostle doesn't want the Church to be lacking understanding about the things of the Spirit, the Person of the Spirit, and ministry of the Holy Spirit...

• Paul makes this statement conceding 5 New Testament truths: ◦ G ifts of the Spirit.. ◦ R apture of the Church.. ◦ I srael in God's prophetic plan.. ◦ T ypology in the Old Testament.. ◦ S piritual Warfare in this life.. 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, • The gentile idols couldn't really communicate with the worshippers...they were dumb, mute, and fake!! • Truth #1 - By contrast, the Holy Spirit can speak to us, and He even desires to speak through us. • Truth #2 - The Spirit of God is... a Spirit, that is to say an immaterial, non-physical, invisible Mind/Person • Truth #3 - He is actually GOD Himself. The Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Trinity. He is equal in power, majesty, knowledge to the God the Father, and God the Son. and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." • Truth #4 - The Holy Spirit of God is precisely that....Holy!! He is morally clean, completely pure, absolutely perfect!! (Isa 6:3; Rev 4:8) • Truth #5 - The Holy Spirit always seeks to speak of and to glorify Jesus Christ! One of the Holy Spirit's main ministries is to testify to the world, of the Person and the Work of Jesus Christ: ◦ John 16:13-14 NKJV - "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own [authority], but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare [it] to you." GOD, the Holy Spirit is held in a very prominent position in the OT: • Gen 1 - The Spirit is CREATOR, and Who fashioned the universe, alongside the Father and Son. • Gen 2 - The Spirit the LIFE-GIVER..Who breathed life into the being

of Adam in Garden. Jud 3 - The Spirit is like a WARRIOR..as He empowered the Heroes of Israel to coquet their enemies. Isa 41 - The Spirit is like LIVING WATER, giving life and refreshment in the desert, to all who come to Him. Eze 37 - The Spirit gives RESURRECTION to the dry bones of Israel, causing them to live again as a people. Zech 4 - The Spirit is the SOURCE OF POWER for the servant of God, to accomplish the work of God. Even JESUS relied completely, exclusively, and desperately on the strength and power of the Holy Spirit during His ministry: John 5:30 NKJV - "I can of Myself do nothing." John 5:30 NLT - "I can do nothing on my own." Then HOW was Jesus Christ, as a Man, so incredibly effective and so mightily used of God?? John the Baptist tells us: John 3:34 NLT - "..He speaks God's words, for God gives Him the Spirit without limit."

Acts 1:4-5 NKJV - "And being assembled together with [them], He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," [He said], "you have heard from Me; 5 "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." • "Deep sea divers enter the water with oxygen tanks on their backs. These tanks contain oxygen. The purpose of these tanks strapped to their backs is so that they can survive in a foreign world. Water is not their natural habitat; it's not the normal place for them to live, so in order for them to survive in this foreign world of water, they need to be connected to a life source from their world. In order for them to make it in world of water, they need air from their world. In other words, if they get disconnected from the oxygen of their world, they won't last long in that world. There connectedness is the key to their survival, because they weren't meant to live in water. So they borrow from their world, in order to live in that world. The true LIFE SOURCE for a Christian is the HOLY SPIRIT. God has given the Christian a Life Source because this world, to the Christian, is foreign territory. In order to live here and make it,

you need to be connected to the LIFE SOURCE from Heaven. If you get disconnected from the LIFE SOURCE, you won't make it in this world as a follower of Christ. You'll be gagging for air that this world doesn't offer because its foreign territory. This LIFE SOURCE is the Holy Spirit, and we need to be filled by Him constantly, to have life and power in this world!" - Tony Evans • Since He was ascending to Heaven, Jesus knew that His disciples didn't need new principles.. they needed a new Person to empower them, and guide them - God, the Holy Spirit! • The word "baptized" is the Greek word "βαπτίζω" or "baptizō" which means "to immerse, to submerge, to overflow" We can have 3 different relationships w the Holy Spirit: John 14:16-17 NKJV - "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." • With you..("para") - God, the Holy Spirit is with EVERY man, woman, and child on the earth. He is constantly and faithfully speaking to them of their need for Christ, and seeking to draw them to Him. • In you..("en") - This is when the Spirit of God comes into a person in SALVATION. When they accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour, the Spirit of Christ comes INSIDE of them, to cleanse them, forgive them, bring them NEW LIFE spiritually. He lives in them FOREVER after that. • Upon you..("epi") - This is an experience in which to Holy Spirit comes upon a person to give them power, strength, and ability to live like Christ, boldly witness for Christ, and live in holiness as Christ. He give us great power by coming upon us...if we invite Him to! ◦ "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in

Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” - Acts 1:8 Speaking to a large audience, D.L. Moody held up a glass and asked, "How can I get the air out of this glass?" One man shouted, "Suck it out with a pump!" Moody replied, "That would create a vacuum and shatter the glass." After numerous other suggestions Moody smiled, picked up a pitcher of water, and filled the glass. "There," he said, "all the air is now removed." He then went on to explain that victory in the Christian life is not accomplished by "sucking out a sin here and there," but by being filled with the Holy Spirit.- Today in the Word, September, 1991

We constantly have a need for more POWER in many areas of daily life: • Our cars...must be refilled with gasoline REPEATEDLY!! • Our precious phones...have to be re-charged DAILY!! • Our bodies...vitally require more energy and food CONSTANTLY!! • SO.....why do we so often neglect our spirits...our walk with Christ?!? We also desperately need a PERSON to help us through life, and guide us into God's will, and to teach us God's ways..the Holy Spirit!! The Holy Spirit is a Person who desires intimate friendship and communion with YOU. He deeply wants to: • comfort you.. • speak to you.. • teach you.. • help you.. • guide you.. • love you.. • and empower YOU...just like in the book of ACTS!!

Just ASK Him to come upon you... • Luke 11:11-13 NKJV - "If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if [he asks] for a fish,

will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 "Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" ◦ D.L Moody said, "I believe firmly that the moment our hearts are emptied of pride and selfishness and ambition and everything that is contrary to God's law, the Holy Spirit will fill every corner of our hearts. But if we are full of pride and conceit and ambition and the world, there is no room for the Spirit of God. We must be emptied before we can be filled." And then, KEEP ON asking regularly... • Ephesians 5:18 AMP - "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit." ◦ Moody was to have an evangelistic preaching campaign in England. An elderly pastor protested, "Why do we need this 'Mr. Moody'? He's uneducated, inexperienced, etc. Who does he think he is anyway? Does he think he has a monopoly on the Holy Spirit?" A younger, wiser pastor rose and responded, "No, but the Holy Spirit has a monopoly on Mr. Moody." Charles Finney, an Evangelist from the 19th century, tells the story of one night when he was filled with the Holy Spirit in a beautiful way: "I returned to the front office, but as I turned and was about to take a seat by the fire, I received a mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost...the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to come in waves of liquid love; it seemed like the very breath of God. I wept aloud with joy and love."
