Case study – Collaborative Outcome No – 5 coach development / 3 increased participation – 13 – 18 year olds / 2 increased membership -Club – School Links SW Strategy – Lead the development of a collaborative project within Whanganui/Rangitikei and Ruapehu Secondary Schools to achieve increased participation by young people, 13 – 18 years. Work towards 80% of young people, 13 -18 years participating in organised sport, lifting our NZSSSC census from 61%. The project has a strong focus on capability building and a large measure of the resource is coaching and coordination 10 schools 10 codes

Need – Schools were working in silos and had limited understanding of both the sport interests that their students had and how they might go about engaging codes with the students. They had limited code experience or teachers with the ability and confidence to coach other sports

Issues -

Limited ability to develop or manage meaningful Kiwisport projects for the benefit of students

-

No effective collaboration in SS to share knowledge, resources and code connections

-

No new initiatives aimed at lifting the participation rate of young people, 13 – 18 years

-

Limited by lack of specific skills (strategy/planning / funding / coach development / H.R)

-

Schools and Sport Coordinators unable to cope with increasing demand (coaching and resources)

-

Limited availability or ability to use teachers

-

Declining regional population rates leading to a reduction in the fiscal and HR resource in schools and subsequently reducing hours allocated for sport coordination

Process – Engage with WSS sports network, discuss and promote benefits of collaborating as a group rather than individual schools, promote concept to funder – KS, link WSS young people research with codes, make connection with codes, lead the project planning, roll out and manage progress, assist with options as issues arise (mentoring), evaluate year one, implement changes in strategy, negotiate continued funding, engage new codes and schools, ongoing monitoring and reporting, use collaborative to shape and inform new initiatives and outcomes for 13 – 18 year olds.

Desired outcomes 

Young people – Ability to engage in and enjoy / achieve at desired sport

Sport(s) / Schools – Ability to grow participation, connect meaningfully with young people, re-define and therefore increase membership

SW – Increased capability for sport and outcomes for members

Other – Funders / sponsors – Making a meaningful difference in the local community

Linkages – As noted above links to a number of related outcome areas and programmes / strategies

Influence – Providing the strategy, collaboration, structures, up skilling, mentorship and support for schools. In addition to this providing codes with the ability to remain informed and connected to young people, 13-18 years Partners – SW / Schools / Codes / Funders Key learning’s - Codes / clubs especially smaller codes need assistance across the spectrum of governance, planning, structure, development, HR, mentoring and partnering. Where some or all of this is provided many of the issues / barrier to club development disappear

Successes / Evidence – Growth in non-participant engagement in sport Increased funding to schools for sport, consolidating resource for sport coordinators role Additional schools involved in year 2, now ratio 11/12 WSS Increase in NZSSSC census rate Increased engagement between schools/ codes

Sustainability / Growth – Schools have stated an ongoing commitment to initiatives for nonparticipants in sport. Codes involved have expressed desire to remain involved and grow the resource time they provide. KS funding secured for another 2 years. Alternate “Tournament Week’ sports and levels of ability planned. Schools have engaged teachers with other sport skills and will continue to look for this capability resource.
