With HCU Junior Chorus Guests: Yorkshire Young Musicians

This concert features some of the most sparkling, vibrant works Handel wrote.   Dixit Dominus is a virtuosic showpiece, designed to showcase the composer to Italian society and to allow him to compete with the brilliant writings of Vivaldi and Corelli. The piece is full of dramatic contrasts, a

Britten wrote his famous Ceremony of Carols on a boat crossing the Atlantic in 1942, at the height of the 2nd World War. The texts were inspired by The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, a collection of medieval texts he found while in Nova Scotia.

simple underpinning theme and detailed and brutal word painting depicting the crushing of enemies.   The Coronation Anthems were Handel’s first act as a British citizen, written for the coronation of King George II. These pieces are most famous for the opening ritornellos, heard in films and on TV numerous times, featuring arpeggiated strings building to the choral fanfare Zadok the Priest - the grandest of music for the grandest of occasions.

The work treats the listener to a wide variety of styles, from chant to angular haunting modern melodies. The text depicts the baby Jesus, Adam and Eve and triumph over evil and the setting of the accompaniment, using solo harp, paints vivid pictures of bells, fluttering birds and the freezing winter wind.

HAYDN: Nelson Mass BACH:

Magnificat In D Soloists Sarah Helsby-Hughes - soprano Hannah Mason - mezzo soprano Nicholas Sales - tenor John Cunningham - bass Haydn’s Nelson Mass was written when the composer was at the peak of his powers. Originally titled “A Mass for troubled times” the piece was first performed around the time Lord Nelson defeated the French at the Battle of the Nile. The work has flashes of the sound world of Mozart’s Requiem and the drama of Don Giovanni and its militaristic feel is highly unusual for a mass setting.   Bach’s highly dramatic Magnificat was originally written for a Christmas service while he was Kantor of St Thomas, Leipzig. Its splendour and grandeur, 5 choral parts, soloists and an unusually large orchestration, places the work as the forerunner to the great choruses of the Mass in B Minor.
