Mal 3:1Now I am sending my messenger—he will prepare the way before me; And the lord whom you seek will come suddenly to his temple; The messenger of the covenant whom you desire—see, he is coming! says the LORD of hosts. Isa 40:1Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.

Commentary Mark 1:4-45 1/3/18 PAGE 18

2 Kgs 1:8They replied, “He wore a hairy garment with a leather belt around his waist.” “It is Elijah the Tishbite!” he exclaimed. 2 Kgs 2:11As they walked on still conversing, a fiery chariot and fiery horses came between the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind, Mark 15:38The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.

Mark 3:29But whoever blasphemes against the holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” 30For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Mark 9:15Immediately on seeing him, the whole crowd was utterly amazed. They ran up to him and greeted him. Mark 14:33He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed.

Commentary Mark 2:1-28 1/10/18 PAGE 27

Mark 3:13He went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve [whom he also named apostles] that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons: 16[he appointed the twelve:] 1

Simon, whom he named Peter; 17James, son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus; Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean, 19and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him. 32 Prov 8:30then was I beside him as artisan; I was his delight day by day, playing before him all the while,

Commentary Mark 3:1-35 1/17/18 PAGE 36

You are to recall/reread Mark 1:16-20 and 2:13-17. Mark 5:37He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. Mark 9:2After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, Mark 14:33He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed.

Commentary Mark 4:1-41 1/24/18 PAGE 43 Here is the first Chapter of Joel: The word of the LORD which came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. 2Listen to this, you elders! Pay attention, all who dwell in the land! Has anything like this ever happened in your lifetime, or in the lifetime of your ancestors? 3Report it to your children. Have your children report it to their children, and their children to the next generation. 4What the cutter left, the swarming locust has devoured; What the swarming locust left, the hopper has devoured; What the hopper left, the consuming locust has devoured. 5Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you wine drinkers, Over the new wine, taken away from your mouths. 6For a nation invaded my land, powerful and past counting, With teeth like a lion’s, fangs like those of a lioness. 7It has stripped bare my vines, splintered my fig tree, Shearing off its bark and throwing it away, until its branches turn white. 8Wail like a young woman dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9Grain offering and libation are cut off from the house of the LORD; In mourning are the priests, the 1

2

ministers of the LORD. 10The field is devastated; the farmland mourns, Because the grain is devastated, the wine has dried up, the oil has failed. 11Be appalled, you farmers! wail, you vinedressers, Over the wheat and the barley, because the harvest in the field is ruined. 12The vine has dried up, the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate, even the date palm and the apple—every tree in the field has dried up. Joy itself has dried up among the people. 13Gird yourselves and lament, you priests! wail, ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, ministers of my God! For the grain offering and the libation are withheld from the house of your God. 14Proclaim a holy fast! Call an assembly! Gather the elders, all who dwell in the land, To the house of the LORD, your God, and cry out to the LORD! 15 O! The day! For near is the day of the LORD, like destruction from the Almighty it is coming! 16Before our very eyes has not food been cut off? And from the house of our God, joy and gladness? 17The seed lies shriveled beneath clods of dirt; the storehouses are emptied. The granaries are broken down, for the grain is dried up. 18 How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered! Because they have no pasture, even the flocks of sheep are starving. 19To you, LORD, I cry! for fire has devoured the wilderness pastures, flame has scorched all the trees in the field. 20 Even the animals in the wild cry out to you; For the streams of water have run dry, and fire has devoured the wilderness pastures.

Mark 3:31His mother and his brothers arrived. Standing outside they sent word to him and called him. 32A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers [and your sisters] are outside asking for you.” 33 But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and [my] brothers?” 34 And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 35[For] whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Mark 1:14After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: 15“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. 3

Mark 2:18The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to him and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 57

Mark 14:10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them. 11When they heard him they were pleased and promised to pay him money. Then he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. Mark 15:15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.

Ezek 34:11For thus says the Lord GOD: Look! I myself will search for my sheep and examine them. 12As a shepherd examines his flock while he himself is among his scattered sheep, so will I examine my sheep. I will deliver them from every place where they were scattered on the day of dark clouds. 13I will lead them out from among the peoples and gather them from the lands; I will bring them back to their own country and pasture them upon the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and every inhabited place in the land. 14 In good pastures I will pasture them; on the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down on good grazing ground; in rich pastures they will be pastured on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest—oracle of the Lord GOD. Exod 16:23he told them, “That is what the LORD has prescribed. Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy sabbath of the LORD. Whatever you want to bake, bake; whatever you want to boil, boil; but whatever is left put away and keep until the morning.”

Commentary Mark 6:6:44-7:37 2/14/18 PAGE 61

Job 9:8He alone stretches out the heavens and treads upon the back of the sea. Job 38:16Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about on the bottom of the deep? 2 Kgs 4:42A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing the man of God twenty barley loaves made from the first fruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, “Give it to the people to eat.” 43But his servant objected, “How can I set this before a hundred?” Elisha again said, “Give it to the people to eat, for thus says the LORD: You will eat and have some left over.” 44He set it 4

before them, and when they had eaten, they had some left over, according to the word of the LORD. 2 Kgs 5:1Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a leper. 2Now the Arameans had captured from the land of Israel in a raid a little girl, who became the servant of Naaman’s wife. 3She said to her mistress, “If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” 4Naaman went and told his master, “This is what the girl from the land of Israel said.” 5The king of Aram said, “Go. I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents, six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments. 6He brought the king of Israel the letter, which read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy.” 7When he read the letter, the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed: “Am I a god with power over life and death, that this man should send someone for me to cure him of leprosy? Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!” 8When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king: “Why have you torn your garments? Let him come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel.” 9Naaman came with his horses and chariot and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10Elisha sent him the message: “Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean.” 11But Naaman went away angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand there to call on the name of the LORD his God, and would move his hand over the place, and thus cure the leprous spot. 12Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?” With this, he turned about in anger and left. 13But his servants came up and reasoned with him: “My father, if the prophet told you to do something extraordinary, would you not do it? All the more since he told you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 1 Kgs 17:17Some time later the son of the woman, the owner of the house, fell sick, and his sickness grew more severe until he stopped breathing. 18So she said to Elijah, “Why have you done this to me, man of God? Have you come to me to call attention to my guilt and to kill my son?” 19Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” Taking him from her lap, he carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. 20He called 5

out to the LORD: “LORD, my God, will you afflict even the widow with whom I am staying by killing her son?” 21Then he stretched himself out upon the child three times and he called out to the LORD: “LORD, my God, let the life breath return to the body of this child.” 22The LORD heard the prayer of Elijah; the life breath returned to the child’s body and he lived. 23 Taking the child, Elijah carried him down into the house from the upper room and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, “See! Your son is alive.” 24 The woman said to Elijah, “Now indeed I know that you are a man of God, and it is truly the word of the LORD that you speak.”

65 Isa 29:13 The Lord said: Since this people draws near with words only and honors me with their lips alone, though their hearts are far from me, And fear of me has become mere precept of human teaching,

Commentary Mark 8:1-38 2/21/18 PAGE 75 Isa 52:13See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. 14Even as many were amazed at him—so marred were his features, beyond that of mortals his appearance, beyond that of human beings—15So shall he startle many nations, kings shall stand speechless; For those who have not been told shall see, those who have not heard shall ponder it. 53:1Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; He had no majestic bearing to catch our eye, no beauty to draw us to him. 3He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, knowing pain, Like one from whom you turn your face, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. 4Yet it was our pain that he bore, our sufferings he endured. We thought of him as stricken, struck down by God and afflicted, 5But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. 6We had all gone astray like sheep, all following our own way; But the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all. 7Though harshly treated, he submitted and did not open his mouth; Like a lamb led to slaughter or a sheep silent before shearers, he did not open his mouth. 8Seized and condemned, he was taken away. Who would have thought any more of his destiny? For he was cut off from the land of the living, struck for the sins of 6

his people. 9He was given a grave among the wicked, a burial place with evildoers, Though he had done no wrong, nor was deceit found in his mouth. 10 But it was the LORD’s will to crush him with pain. By making his life as a reparation offering, he shall see his offspring, shall lengthen his days, and the LORD’s will shall be accomplished through him. 11Because of his anguish he shall see the light; because of his knowledge he shall be content; My servant, the just one, shall justify the many, their iniquity he shall bear. 12 Therefore I will give him his portion among the many, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death, was counted among the transgressors, Bore the sins of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

Commentary Mark 9:1-32 2/28/18 PAGE 79

Mark 1:11And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Exod 24:12The LORD said to Moses: Come up to me on the mountain and, while you are there, I will give you the stone tablets on which I have written the commandments intended for their instruction. 13So Moses set out with Joshua, his assistant, and went up to the mountain of God. 14He told the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are with you. Anyone with a complaint should approach them.” 15Moses went up the mountain. Then the cloud covered the mountain. 16The glory of the LORD settled upon Mount Sinai. The cloud covered it for six days, and on the seventh day he called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the LORD was seen as a consuming fire on the top of the mountain. 18But Moses entered into the midst of the cloud and went up on the mountain. He was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Commentary Mark 11:1-12:9 3/21/18 PAGE 1 Macc 13:47So Simon came to terms with them and did not attack them. He expelled them from the city, however, and he purified the houses in which there were idols. Then he entered the city with hymns and songs of praise. 48After removing from it everything that was impure, he settled there people who observed the law. He improved its fortifications and built himself a residence. 49The people in the citadel in Jerusalem were prevented from going out into the country and back to buy or sell; they suffered greatly from hunger, and many of them died of starvation. 50They finally cried out to Simon, and he gave them terms of peace. He expelled them from the citadel and cleansed it of impurities. 51On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the one hundred and seventy-first year, the Jews entered the citadel with shouts of praise, the waving of palm branches, the playing of harps and cymbals and lyres, and the singing of hymns and canticles, because a great enemy of Israel had been crushed. 52 Simon decreed that this day should be celebrated every year with rejoicing. He also strengthened the fortifications of the temple mount alongside the citadel, and he and his people dwelt there. 105 Isa 65:17See, I am creating new heavens and a new earth; The former things shall not be remembered nor come to mind. 18Instead, shout for joy and be glad forever in what I am creating. Indeed, I am creating Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight; 19I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in my people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying; 20No longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, nor anyone who does not live a full lifetime; One who dies at a hundred years shall be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred shall be thought accursed. 21They shall build houses and live in them, they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit;

Isa 55:12 Yes, in joy you shall go forth, in peace you shall be brought home; 8

Mountains and hills shall break out in song before you, all trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13In place of the thornbush, the cypress shall grow, instead of nettles, the myrtle. This shall be to the LORD’s renown, as an everlasting sign that shall not fail. Isa 65:17See, I am creating new heavens and a new earth; The former things shall not be remembered nor come to mind. 18Instead, shout for joy and be glad forever in what I am creating. Indeed, I am creating Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight; 19I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in my people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying; 20No longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, nor anyone who does not live a full lifetime; One who dies at a hundred years shall be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred shall be thought accursed. 21They shall build houses and live in them, they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit; 22They shall not build and others live there; they shall not plant and others eat. As the years of a tree, so the years of my people; and my chosen ones shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23They shall not toil in vain, nor beget children for sudden destruction; For they shall be a people blessed by the LORD and their descendants with them. 24Before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I will hear. 25The wolf and the lamb shall pasture together, and the lion shall eat hay like the ox—but the serpent’s food shall be dust. None shall harm or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the LORD.

Commentary Mark 14:1-72 4/25/18 PAGE 124 Mark 8:29And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.” 30Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. 32He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Commentary Mark 15:33-16:8 5/9/18 145

Psalm 22: For the leader; according to “The deer of the dawn.” A psalm of David. 2 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, from my cries of anguish? 3 My God, I call by day, but you do not answer; by night, but I have no relief. 4 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the glory of Israel. 5 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted and you rescued them. 6 To you they cried out and they escaped; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. 7 But I am a worm, not a man, scorned by men, despised by the people. 8All who see me mock me; they curl their lips and jeer; they shake their heads at me: 9 “He relied on the LORD—let him deliver him; if he loves him, let him rescue him.” 10 For you drew me forth from the womb, made me safe at my mother’s breasts. 11 Upon you I was thrust from the womb; since my mother bore me you are my God. 12 Do not stay far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help. 13 Many bulls surround me; fierce bulls of Bashan encircle me. 14 They open their mouths against me, lions that rend and roar. 15 Like water my life drains away; all my bones are disjointed. My heart has become like wax, it melts away within me. 16 As dry as a potsherd is my throat; my tongue cleaves to my palate; you lay me in the dust of death. 17 Dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet. 18 I can count all my bones. They stare at me and gloat; 19 they divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots. 20 But you, LORD, do not stay far off; my strength, come quickly to help me. 21 Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the grip of the dog. 22 Save me from the lion’s mouth, my poor life from the horns of wild bulls. 23 Then I will proclaim your name to my brethren; in the assembly I will praise you: 24 “You who fear the LORD, give praise! All descendants of Jacob, give honor; show reverence, all descendants of Israel! 1

10

25

For he has not spurned or disdained the misery of this poor wretch, Did not turn away from me, but heard me when I cried out. 26 I will offer praise in the great assembly; my vows I will fulfill before those who fear him. 27 The poor will eat their fill; those who seek the LORD will offer praise. May your hearts enjoy life forever!” 28 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD; All the families of nations will bow low before him. 29 For kingship belongs to the LORD, the ruler over the nations. 30 All who sleep in the earth will bow low before God; All who have gone down into the dust will kneel in homage. 31 And I will live for the LORD; my descendants will serve you. 32 The generation to come will be told of the Lord, that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn the deliverance you have brought. 146

156

Ps 69:22Instead they gave me poison for my food; and for my thirst they gave me vinegar. Isa 63:18Why have the wicked invaded your holy place, why have our enemies trampled your sanctuary? 19Too long have we been like those you do not rule, on whom your name is not invoked. Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, with the mountains quaking before you. 64:1As when brushwood is set ablaze, or fire makes the water boil! Then your name would be made known to your enemies and the nations would tremble before you, Prov 1:7Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline. Prov 9:10The beginning of wisdom is fear of the LORD, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Sir 1:12The fear of the Lord rejoices the heart, giving gladness, joy, and long life. Sir 1:16The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she inebriates them with her fruits. Ps 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; prudent are all who practice it. His praise endures forever.
