The Right Person Myth AUG. 17/18, 2013 JASON STRAND

Introduction Our culture doesn’t tend to align with God’s plan for love and relationships. Culture tells us the Bible’s guidelines are outdated and obsolete. However, if we look at God’s plan, we see wise and practical information on dating and marriage. Whether you are single or married, use the scripture references and discussion questions below to uncover the right person myth.

Discussion Questions 1

The Bible tells us not to follow our heart as it leads to destruction. How does this go against what our culture tells us? Read Jeremiah 17:9 and share if there have been times in your life when your heart may have led you in the wrong direction.

2

If you are single or married, what changes would you need to make in your life to give God your undivided attention? What could be the potential outcomes if you tried to live your life this way? Who could possibly benefit from your full commitment to Christ?

3

Read Matthew 6:33. What does God promise if we seek him first in all we do and live righteously? What does that mean to you today and what could it mean to your future?

4

Discuss what it means to be equally yoked. What are the consequences of marrying someone who is not yoked equally with us?

5

What traits do you desire in a potential mate? What traits did you desire in your mate when you were single? Consider the difference in having a list of what you want in a spouse versus how you could become the kind of person you would want to marry. How does that change your character, behavior or decisions?

Think About It Jason said, “Marriage is less about finding the right person and more about becoming the right person.” Whether you are married or single, what areas of your life can you focus on this week to become more like the person God created you to be?

Commit to memory “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who calls you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16
