Communication Tip Sheet: Pearls for Your Practice

Focus not only on objective aspects of the disease, but also the patient’s subjective perspective of his or her symptoms, functioning and performance

Run through the major manifestations of the disease and the potential effects on the patient’s life

When addressing life expectancy, frame the discussion with respect to the patient’s treatment

Structure your conversation about prognosis

At each visit, touch base on a different particular aspect of the disease and review it with the patient in a sequential manner

Ask the patient whether you have discussed too much, what they heard you say or whether they have any questions

Encourage patients to always bring a significant other or friend to the appointment to help them with the information about the disease

Suggest that patients record the discussion with their phone, which can be helpful for digesting a significant amount of information over time at home

Suggest patients take notes during their appointments

Encourage participation in clinical trials

Refer patients to support groups so that patients can share their experience with peers
