COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR POSITION OVERVIEW

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the creation of marketing and communication materials that enables the congregation and staff of Westlake United Methodist Church to effectively “tell the story” of the church’s mission and supporting activities across digital and print media for promotion within and outside of the church.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Communications Coordinator reports to the Small Group & Welcoming Ministry Associate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Exempt, 10 hours per week. Hours can be flexible and will vary based on church activities and when specific tasks are being prepared. Weekly meeting with supervisor preferably in the church building will be mandatory and established at point of hire. Compensation is established at point of hire. Benefits will be in accordance to the employee manual of the WUMC. There will be an annual evaluation at the request of either party. Employment is at-will, not contractual.

JOB REQUIREMENTS •

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree preferred, prefer degree in journalism, communications, marketing or graphic design.



Experience: Prefer 2 years of experience in a comparable position. Experience with graphic art design, writing and editorial skills to create content across platforms of print, web, digital projection and social media. Require computer knowledge in graphic arts and word processing programs (Publisher, Photoshop, InDesign, Constant Contact, Word or similar); usage of internet, websites, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) and understanding of budgeting.



Must have excellent communication skills to work with a variety of employees and church members to assist them in telling their ministry story and matching the story to the best possible communication vehicles.



Must be a highly organized person who can monitor numerous projects at once and who can prioritize the messages that need to be communicated and work ahead to gather information and inputs needed.



Must be highly creative and stay current with new communication platforms.



Must be flexible to handle revisions, deadlines and seasonality of the work.



Must maintain a strict code of confidentiality regarding “sensitive” information.

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES

1) Responsible for supporting the brand image and mission of Westlake UMC through clear, concise and empowering communication materials designed for the congregation and community: a) Given basic content, the Communications Coordinator creates the monthly Messenger newsletter, weekly email blasts, website updates within CMS platform, worship images, flyers, signage and social media posts in a timely manner. b) Monitors online/social media posts for appropriateness with the church's brand identity, Wesleyan theology and the United Methodist Church's social principles. c) Utilizes resources generated by United Methodist Communications and other sources to augment in-house resources. d) Writes press releases as needed. e) Supports the Pastor, staff and committee/team leads with their communication needs. f) Works closely with the Office Coordinator to hand off materials for in-house publication, email distribution or volunteer work to assemble and distribute. g) Utilizes the communication gifts within the congregation (graphic designers, writers, etc) for projects as needed. 2) Give input into the annual communication plan that is developed by the Senior Pastor and Small Group and Welcoming Ministries Associate that will drive seasonal messaging. a) Suggest new practices that enable the church to keep relevant with its messaging 3) Represent Westlake UMC effectively and respectfully to the staff, congregation, and the public. 4) Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Pastor or SPRC. 5) Help to make disciples of Jesus Christ (reaching out to new people). 6) Help to mature disciples of Jesus Christ (deepening relationships with Christ and others).
