2007 Willowlake HOA Annual Meeting Recap

Once again, I would like to take an opportunity to thank the residents of our subdivision for taking the time to send in proxy forms and even more so for attending our Oct. 25, 2007 HOA Annual Meeting. Whether you realize it or not, holding an annual meeting is a requirement of our Willowlake Subdivision By-Laws. Thus, having to reschedule another meeting, if we do not meet the required quorum, is simply wasteful spending of your assessment fees. Please do your part so that we may avoid this situation.   Speaking of assessment fees, we are glad to inform you that there will be no increase to the 2008 HOA Assessment fee. It will remain at its current amount of $600. However, unless we are able to contain our community costs or perhaps even reduce some services, it’s possible that we may see increases in the future. Please allow me to provide a brief recap of some of our discussions:   Garbage pick-up via Royal Disposal is expected to increase for 2008. Obviously, one of the factors leading to the increase is the cost of fuel to run and operate the garbage trucks. A second consideration is the increases in dumping fees for landfill incurred by Royal Disposal. A question that we’re considering is, should we consider going to (1) pick-up per week to maintain current costs? We’ve also looked into other trash pickup vendors, but we the Board, feel that Royal Disposal is providing the best value & service for our money.   The Gazebo & Park lights were finally restored in late Sept. or early Oct. Unimaginable as it may seem, we had a difficult time securing a vendor to come out to do the work. One company cited the unusually large amount of rain we received over the summer as a reason for his/her back load of electrical work. As of this writing, some of the park lights have gone out again. Please be assured that the outage is being looked at again and hopefully will be restored as soon as possible.   We have had a rash of late or incorrect mail delivery from our Post Office substation over the past year and perhaps even longer than that. Since the Willowlake HOA has no direct control over this problem, we ask that you contact the Willow Place PO Substation supervisor (Carla West) at (281) 890-2392.   Vandalism, unfortunately, is still present in our community. This Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc.

past year, we have incurred some damage to our pool house (namely, the exhaust vent & electrical meter) and graffiti painted onto our gazebos. We continue to ask that you report any vandalism you see occurring, but would strongly suggest that you not approach the person(s) committing these acts. Please contact the Sherriff’s Dept. at (713) 221-6000. And finally, last but not least, we voted in a fifth person to serve on the Willowlake HOA  Board of Directors. Please join me in welcoming Annette Rathgeber to the Board. While the five positions on the BOD are currently filled, there are many other opportunities to serve in our community. Please contact any Board member or SCS for further information if you would like to volunteer your time to make Willowlake a great subdivision to live in.

Wishing you a Holiday full of surprises

Willowlake Happy Holidays!

It’s time to get up in those attics, look in the corners of your garage and untangle all those extension cords. Yep, that’s right, it’s holiday decoration season again. Last year our neighbors did a fantastic job decorating and did a great job adding to the holiday season. As with most years, the Yard of the Month Committee (along with your help) will be judging holiday decorations on Monday December 10th from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 or 9:00 P.M.. So if you want your house to be up for consideration we encourage everyone to have their lights on and their spirit flowing! Just a reminder, here are last years category winners:

Willowlake Black-eyed Pea Dip My Mother-in-law is a firm believer in starting the New Year off with a little good luck. So every New Years Day she makes a big batch of Black-eyed Peas for her family. They all loved them, because they are good, except her youngest son, my husband. He would not eat them no matter how she tried to serve them (kind of like Green Eggs and Ham). When I married him she told me, it is up to you. If you want good luck get him to eat his New Years Black-eyed Peas. I cooked them every way I could, but nothing worked. Then one day about 5 years ago I found this recipe for a dip using black eye peas. I made it, but did not tell him what was in it. HE LOVED IT. Now I make this dip every New Years, and his Mom is happy.

Melt margarine and cheese in medium bowl in microwave for about 1 minute. Stir to blend and set aside. Drain peas, saving liquid, mash them and add to blended cheese with the rest of the ingredients. Use reserved liquid if needed to achieve the right consistency. Serve with your favorite cracker.
