A Safe and Spooktacular Halloween

From the candy to the costumes, Halloween is a fun-filled time for kids and parents alike. But it’s also a holiday that can pose dangers to young revelers. To help make this year’s festivity a trick-free treat, follow these simple safety tips: Adorning Your Little Ghouls • Choose a light-colored costume or add glow-in-the-dark tape to the front and back of the costume so your kids can be easily seen. Not Available Online • Don't buy a costume unless it's labeled "flame-retardant." This means the material won't burn. • Make sure wigs and beards don't cover your kids' eyes, noses, or mouths. • Don't let your children wear masks — they can make it difficult for kids to see and breathe. Instead, use nontoxic face paint or makeup. Have younger children draw pictures of what they want to look like. Older children will have fun putting the makeup on themselves. • Put a name tag — with your phone number — on your children's costumes. • Avoid oversized and high-heeled shoes that could cause your kids to trip. • Avoid long or baggy skirts, pants, or shirtsleeves that could catch on something and cause falls. • Make sure that any props your kids carry, such as wands or swords, are flexible. Pumpkin-Carving Precautions • Clean up your mess. Pumpkin flesh is slippery and can cause falls and injuries when dropped on the floor. Layer newspaper or old cloths under your carving workspace, and clean up spills right away so no one slips or trips. • Don't let kids handle knives. Have them draw their designs on the face of the pumpkin with a black marker — then you do the (Continued on Page 3) Willowlake Community Newsletter - October 2007

Willowlake Community Newsletter - October 2007

If you are at least age 25 or older and working, or worked in the past, it's very likely you have received a Social Security Statement in the mail. Your Statement is an easy-to-read, personal record of the earnings on which you have paid Social Security taxes during your working years. A summary is included of estimated monthly benefits you and your family may receive as a result of your earnings. Social Security provides the Statements in two ways: automatic annual mailings to workers and former workers age 25 and older and any time to workers who request them. Social Security suggests you keep your statement with other important papers and use it in the following ways: FIRST, the benefit estimate in your Statement can play an important role in your financial planning. When combined with your savings, investments and other pensions, your Social Security monthly benefits can help build a secure future for yourself and your family. SECOND, the Statement can help you make sure your reported earnings and other important information, such as your name and date of birth, are correct on your record. The sooner you identify any discrepancies, the easier it will be to correct them. THIRD, the general information on the Statement tells you all about the protection you are earning under Social Security. Many people think of Social Security only as a Retirement program. The Statement shows how even young workers are building valuable protection in case they become disabled or died before reaching retirement age. You can expect to receive your Statement about 3 months before your month of birth. As an example, my birthday is in October and I receive my Statement in July. You WON'T receive a Statement automatically if: • You are under age 25 • You are already receiving Social Security monthly benefits on your record, • Social Security cannot get a current mailing address for you • You are age 62 or older and receiving Social Security benefits on someone else's record (spouse, parent, child, etc.) • You are a Medicare beneficiary • You requested a Statement within the last 11 months. You can request a Statement online from www.socialsecurity. gov or call the toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. After you receive a form to complete (SSA-7004) and mail it back, your Statement will be mailed to you. You will receive your Statement in about 2-4 weeks, if requested electronically or about 4-6 weeks after you mail the request. Remember to review your earnings history and personal data when you receive your Statement. You want to make sure Social Security has your name and date of birth correctly and has earnings posted for each year you have worked and paid Social Security taxes. The estimates given on your Statement are including projected future earnings up to your full retirement age. If you are planning to retire early, say age 50 or 55, you will want to request a Statement which would then give you an estimate using earnings up until you plan to stop work. The earliest you can receive monthly Retirement benefits from Social Security is age 62. In wrapping up I would like to share a few interesting statistics with you. In 2007 almost 50 million people will receive over $585 billion in Social Security benefits. There are 34 million retired (Continued on Page 5) Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc.

Willowlake Social Security Statements - (Continued from Page 4) workers and dependents receiving monthly benefits, with an average for the worker of $1050.00. There are 8.7 million disabled workers and dependents receiving monthly benefits, with an average for the worker of $979.00. There are 6.5 million survivors receiving monthly benefits with an average of $1012.00. Among elderly receiving Social Security benefits, 21% of married couples and about 43% of unmarried persons rely on Social Security for 91% or more of their income. There are an estimated 163 million workers in the workforce, 96% are covered by Social Security. Unfortunately, 52% of the workforce has no private pension coverage and 31% has no savings set aside specifically for retirement. You can see it's critical to make plans for yourself and your family. Your Social Security Statement can be a valuable tool helping you understand your financial future!

A Safe Halloween - (Continued from Page 3) raisins and dried fruits are good choices. • Avoid giving out or letting your kids have: o hard candy, especially suckers and jawbreakers — they dissolve slowly, coat teeth with sugar, and can chip teeth and cause choking o sticky candy — caramels, taffy, and gummy candies can be harmful to braces, retainers, and fillings, and can get Notdental Available Online trapped between work. Plain chocolate pieces aren’t as hazardous to dental work and are easier to brush away.  o regular bubble gum — it circulates cavity-causing sugars throughout the mouth and teeth and can also be harmful to dental work. Instead, offer sugar-free gum to help reduce tooth decay and cavities. • Once your trick-or-treaters have returned with their Halloween goodies, spread out their bounty of candy by letting them have a treat or two a day, instead of making Halloween morsels accessible by keeping them out in big bags or bowls for kids to sample throughout the day. Take these quick and easy precautions to help your little ghosts and goblins have a hauntingly happy and safe Halloween.
