First Santa and The Sheriff event held fireplace and Sheriff Hodge read the CHRISTmas Story, knowing some of these children, and the adults that attended, may have never heard the story before. Cookies from Candi’s Cookies were eaten as all eyes and ears were opened to the “Greatest Story Ever Told”. Soon after, Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by to personally deliver some gifts, picked out specifically for the children. The children’s eyes were as wide as their smiles in some truly magical moments. The children also had a time of arts and crafts where they decorated their own CHRISTmas trees on canvas, they also made thumbprint ornaments and created CHRISTmas cards to be given to the sweet residents at local nursing homes. Delicious food was enjoyed by everyone, and the evening wasn’t over until every child had taken home their personalized CHRISTmas stocking, a food basket for the family and a new backpack and school supplies. There were tears, there were smiles and both came from a place of love and appreciation. Submitted A building that has housed specialized training for members of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and others from across several states, a building that has been the center for public awareness forums for church and personalized safety, a building that has opened its doors to new recruits and said farewell to those that have moved on became a CHRISTmas Wonderland for 19 children from around Jones County on December 15, 2015. Sheriff Alex Hodge, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Santa himself, hosted the very first “Santa and the Sheriff” event. It has been a tradition for the Sheriff and his Department to meet a new group of children at CHRISTmas and help fulfill their wish lists. This practice has normally taken place at a large local “box” store. “The kids enjoyed the shopping spree, but I couldn’t help but think there was something missing,” said Sheriff Hodge, “CHRISTmas is so much more than the filling up the space under the tree, it’s more about filling the space in your heart.” The transformation of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department’s Training Center began with a beautiful setting with a mantle, fireplace and CHRISTmas tree. The children were selected based on various criteria, the majority having had experienced more despair than any child should witness and already had a relationship with the Deputies and Investigators in 2015. The evening began with every child receiving and changing into a new set of pajamas. Everyone gathered on the rug in front of the

By Linda Cranford Newly elected Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Sam Britton was sworn into office Tuesday, December 29, by Jones County Justice Court Judge Billie Graham. The Jones County courtroom was filled with Britton’ s family and friends for the ceremony. “Most of you here in this room, today, have had something to do with me being elected,” said Britton. “Getting elected has been a humbling experience.” Britton added, “You’ve done your job, now it’s time for me to do my job.” “Sam and I have been friends for a long time,” said Graham. “I am honored to be asked to perform his swearing in.” “Sam and I have met so many good people across the state during the campaign,” said Britton’s wife, Robin Robinson, who according to Britton played a huge role in his campaign. “He’s been reading and studying to prepare for his first meeting, which is January 5. He wants to do a good job for the people of Mississippi, and I know that he can.” Britton will officially take office at 12:01 on January 1, 2016.
