The Lord’s Supper is a physical action, instructed by Jesus, through which God acts to nourish, sustain, comfort, challenge, teach, remind, and assure us of God’s redemptive love. The celebration of the Lord’s Supper nourishes our faith and stirs our imaginations to perceive the work of God and the power of The Gospel more clearly. It is an act that helps pave the way for revival and renewal. East Cooper Baptist Church welcomes to the Lord’s Table all who have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior. If you are uncertain where you stand in your relationship to Christ, or are not ready to take the Lord’s Supper this morning, please allow the elements to pass and use this time to seek the Lord in prayer.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER TIME FOR COMMUNION PREPARATION

THE LORD’S SUPPER

MY WORTH IS NOT IN WHAT I OWN My worth is not in what I own Not in the strength of flesh and bone But in the costly wounds of love At the cross My worth is not in skill or name In win or lose, in pride or shame But in the blood of Christ that flowed At the cross I rejoice in my Redeemer Greatest Treasure, Wellspring of my soul I will trust in Him, no other. My soul is satisfied in Him alone. As summer flowers we fade and die Fame, youth and beauty hurry by But life eternal calls to us At the cross I will not boast in wealth or might Or human wisdom’s fleeting light But I will boast in knowing Christ At the cross Two wonders here that I confess My worth and my unworthiness My value fixed - my ransom paid At the cross

OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY

YOUR GRACE STILL AMAZES ME • ECBC CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA My faithful Father, enduring Friend, Your tender mercy’s like a river with no end. It overwhelms me, covers my sin. Each time I come into Your presence I stand in wonder once again. Your grace still amazes me. You love is still a mystery. Each day I fall on my knees ‘Cause Your grace still amazes me. Oh, patient Savior, You make me whole. You are the Author and the Healer of my soul. What can I give You, What can I say? I know there’s no way to repay You, Only to offer You my praise.

TRAITS OF THE SELF-LIFE FOR COMMUNION PREPARATION

As you make spiritual preparation for observing the Lord’s Supper, the following can be used as a help to self-examination. Here are some of the features and manifestations of the self-life (or a carnal heart). The Holy Spirit alone can interpret and apply this to your individual case. As you read, examine yourself in the very presence of God: Are you ever conscious of a secret spirit of pride: an exalted feeling, in view of your success or position; because of your good training or appearance; because of your natural gifts and abilities? An important, independent spirit? Love of human praise; a secret fondness to be noticed; love of supremacy, drawing attention to self in conversation; a swelling out of self when you have had a free time in speaking or praying? The stirrings of anger or impatience, which, worst of all, you call nervousness or holy indignation; a touchy, sensitive spirit; a disposition to resent or retaliate when disapproved of or contradicted; a desire to throw sharp, heated flings at another? Selfwill; a stubborn, unreachable spirit; an arguing, talkative spirit; harsh, sarcastic expressions; an unyielding, headstrong disposition; a driving commanding spirit; a disposition to criticize and pick flaws when set aside and unnoticed; a peevish, fretful spirit: a disposition that loves to be coaxed and humored? Carnal fear; a man-fearing spirit; a shrinking from reproach and duty; reasoning around your cross; a shrinking from doing your whole duty by those of wealth or position; a fearfulness that someone will offend and drive some prominent person away; a compromising spirit? A jealous disposition, a secret spirit of envy shut up in your heart; an unpleasant sensation in view of the great prosperity and success of another; a disposition to speak of the faults and failings, rather than the gifts and virtues, of those more talented and appreciated than yourself? A dishonest, deceitful disposition; the evading and covering eof the truth; the covering up of your real faults; leaving a better impression of yourself than is strictly true; false humility; exaggeration; straining the truth? Unbelief; a spirit of discouragement in times of pressure and opposition; lack of quietness and confidence in God; lack of faith and trust in God; a disposition to worry and complain in the midst of pain, poverty, or at the dispensations of Divine Providence; an overanxious feeling whether everything will come out all right? Formality and deadness; lack of concern for lost souls; dryness and indifference; lack of power with God? Selfishness; love of ease; love of money?

Oh, to be saved from myself, dear Lord, Oh to be lost in Thee; Oh, that it might be no more I, But Christ that lives in me. “Create in me a clean heart, 0 God, And renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

Your grace still amazes me. It’s deeper, it’s wider, It’s stronger, it’s higher Than anything my eyes can see.

LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER... MIRACULOUS SINGING

The Church in Corporate Worship Please use the following prayer to prepare your hearts for worship: We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather the crumbs under your table.

Deep and abiding joy comes through the knowledge of who Christ is and what He has done for us. Our worship is fueled by the reality of that joy this morning as we rejoice in the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah! What A Savior!

REFLECTION

THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION

But you are the same Lord; you ever love to show mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of the body of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his cup, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us.

Cheap grace means forgiveness of sins proclaimed as a general truth... an intellectual assent to that idea is held to be itself sufficient to secure remission of sins.

Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross.

Costly grace is the gospel. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and grace because it gives a man the only true life.

It is costly because it condemns sin and grace because it justifies the sinner.

Amen.

A prayer written by Thomas Cranmer, 16th century archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the English Reformation. He was martyred for his faith.

AUGUST 14, 2016

Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of His Son... it is grace because God did not reckon His Son too dear a price to pay for our life.

Costly grace is the Incarnation of God....

When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die....

That is why the rich young man was so loath to follow Jesus, for the cost of his following was the death of his will.

In fact, every command of Jesus is a call to die, with all our affections and lusts. -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Love so amazing, so Divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. -- Issac Watts

Not all singing is a miracle. Most of the music we’re exposed to any given day is beautiful in its own right, but it’s not supernatural. What makes a song a miracle is when it is offered with a redeemed and genuine heart of awe and praise to God. It’s not a song that comes from deep within, but from far above. It is an act of sovereign grace. [God] put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40:3) When God saved us, he retuned our souls to sing. He didn’t train us in music theory or give us vocal lessons, but he opened our eyes and made us alive. Our mouths look and sound like the same old instrument, but they’ve been radically and eternally transformed to declare the glory and goodness of our God. Singing that truly honors God isn’t just about singing. After all, Jesus said, quoting Isaiah, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Matthew 15:8). One category of singers are those who sing God’s name while their hearts chase after everyone and everything else. Those songs are not miracles. But by God’s grace, our empty songs can be filled with affection, enjoyment, and awe. David declares, I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. (Psalm 9:2) The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. (Psalm 28:7) - Marshall Seigal

ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS’ NAME

ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS’ NAME MILES LANE

This morning we join our hearts and voices in joyful praise singing the great and familiar text of the hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name” by Edwart Perronet and John Rippon (1760). In our Baptist Hymnal we have the text to this hymn set to three different and distinct tunes. The hymn tune this morning is MILES LANE, which is perhaps the least familiar, but equally wonderful tune, with which to carry the message of this text. I love the way the last phrases of “Crown Him!” are repeated, build in volume and go higher and higher as we exalt the powerful name of Christ Jesus! Sometimes singing a familiar text to a different tune allows us to think about the text in a new and fresh way, and speaks its truth in a powerful way to our hearts, leading us in miraculous praise. I hope that is what happens for you this morning.
