Serving our neighbors

W

e had an outstanding celebration of mission with our Church Without Walls weekend May 14-15. Some folks got an early start on the work, as we had volunteers serving the weekend of May 7-8, too. On the 14th, we had people serving off-site working on the final Compassion Katy Habitat for Humanity house in the neighborhood we started work on in 2014. This project also included the dedication ceremony for two of the houses in this neighborhood. Everyone is encouraged to pray for the homeowners in this neighborhood, to which we are forever linked. On the weekend of the 14th and 15th, we did flood recovery work in the Bear Creek area and in Houston, our children made care packages for children in the hospital, we made plastic mats for homeless folks, we created blankets for the YMCA, we packed meals for children, and we continued on page 3

Fifth Sunday Family Worship on May 29

O

n Sunday, May 29, all of our worship services will be Family Worship Services, in which we encourage families to worship together. These services will engage children and spark conversations with parents. We ask everyone to be in worship to show support to these families, some of whom may be bringing their children to worship for the first time. We will not offer Sunday School, SPLASH, or SPLISH SPLASH for our children. Childcare will be provided for children 3 and younger. For information, contact Children’s Ministries at (281) 492-8031.

The power of the Holy Spirit Dear Friends in Christ, Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday, a day to remember when the Holy Spirit filled the disciples and gave them the power to change the world. I found an article that provides a good image for the way in which the Holy Spirit works in our lives. I would like to share it with you and then make an observation. The story is about a sunken ship and it illustrates the quietness of the Holy Spirit, but at the same time the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Several years ago, engineers building a new bridge over the East River in New York discovered that the wrecked hull of a ship, sunk many years before, lay right where the center piers were to be built. Powerful machinery was Dr. Pat Sparks, Senior Pastor brought in to remove the ship, but it would not budge. Then one of the engineers had an unusual idea. Why not have the tide raise the ship? Some strong cables were attached to the hull when the tide was low. The other ends were fastened to the barge above. As the tide came in, the barge gradually lifted the sunken ship. It was then towed out into the ocean and sunk at a spot that would not cause future problems. God’s Holy Spirit is like the tide, which comes quietly, but with enough power so that we might do the job God has called and led each of us to do. I pray that we will open our lives to the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us to “connect the world with God’s love.” Blessings,

Pat

CWOW continued from page 1 celebrated with communion and singing at the Brookwood Community in Brookshire. Next weekend, students will serve at the Katy Manor apartments and a group of St. Peter’s members will help senior adults with small home repairs. In our sanctuary worship services, we welcomed Rev. Gaston Warner, CEO of ZOE ministry. He preached and shared about the powerful work our church is supporting with our working group in Kenya, Precious, which is providing 105 orphans with a way out of poverty and instability. Our students worked in the Lobby, providing our congregation with more information about this life-giving ministry. Rev. Warner issued a call to people to visit our working group in Kenya. If you are interested in being part of a trip like this, please contact Nathan Bledsoe. These days have been a powerful witness to a church that truly believes in connecting the world with God’s love. Thanks be to God!

Learn how to help young clergy

D

uring Bishop Huie’s tenure, our conference has developed an incredible set of programs and ministries designed to recruit, equip, and support young clergy. These programs include deep theological education for high school students, internships in local churches for college students, financial assistance for young pastors with student loan debt from seminary, and leadership development and training for young pastors. We’re hosting a dinner Thursday, May 26, for anyone interested in learning more about how they can support these young clergy. Please register at stpkaty.org.

End of School Book Drive Children and adults are encouraged to bring new and/or slightly used books for children ages 3-14 as a gift to the children of Los Arcos Apartment complex, which we partner with through Fondren Apartment Ministries. Families needed to host camp counselors

W

e our partnering with T Bar M Discover 252 Adventure Camp this summer to provide a week-long camp for children on the St. Peter’s campus. A team of college-age counselors will be a part of this camp, and we need two more host families who can give them a place to stay from July 16 to July 23. A minimum of three college students of the same gender will stay at each home; you are welcome to host more if you like. The host families will provide a basic continental-style breakfast each day and dinner most nights. We need to know if you can help as soon as possible so we can plan. To serve as a host family, contact Shelley Keating at [email protected] or Elizabeth Bucher at [email protected].

Family Fellowship Fun Nights

F

amily Fellowship Fun Nights, from 6-8 p.m. on the first Sunday night of each month this summer, will replace Family Vacation Bible School. Each night will have a theme and will include a craft, game, dinner, and movie and popcorn. The fee per family for June and August is $20 each night. Financial assistance is available if needed by calling Elizabeth Bucher at (281) 492-8031. In July we will have food trucks, so everyone will pay for their own food. Sign up for Family Fellowship Fun Nights at stpkaty.org.
