CONNECTION VOL. 3, No. 14 February 1, 2013

Connecting the World with God’s Love

THIS ISSUE: Study on Poverty

The Lydia Circle of the

United Methodist Women will present this two-part study Feb. 21 and 28.

Do You Have a Heart for Mission? This Mission Ministries Team is looking for individuals who are willing to help St. Peter’s reach out to others in our community and in the world.

Home Groups provide a place for you to study, discuss, pray and make friends

H

ave you been looking for a way to get connected to your St. Peter’s family and grow in your faith through a small group? Are you looking for a group with a small number of members? Or a group that is just starting so that you can be there from the beginning? Maybe you would prefer to be in a group with people your age or stage in life. Home Groups may be what you are looking for. Home Groups are small groups of people who gather in homes two to four times a month to encourage members to grow in their faith through study, discussion, prayer and fellowship. Groups are usually formed around an age group, life stage, gender, or some other common attribute. We have several groups to choose from. If you don’t see a group that meets your needs, please contact Beth continued on page 4

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

T

he United Methodist Men invite everyone to the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Feb. 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Lott Hall. Cost for adults is $6 and for children 6-12 is $3. There is no charge for children younger than 6. Proceeds from the supper benefit the Cliff Lott Ministerial Scholarship Fund. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. In the United Kingdom, pancakes were traditionally eaten as a last feast before the fasting of Lent. Shrove is the past tense of shrive, which means absolution of sins.

Something wonderful

I

hope this finds everyone well. I would love to share with you two things that are dear to my heart. The first is our Ecuador trip coming up Aug. 4-10. We are able to take 20 people on this trip, which I know will be a remarkable experience. We will spend the week visiting the Compassion International facilities, where we can help and show love to children living in poverty. For two days we will be doing a service project at one of the facilities, including minor repairs as well as some Vacation Bible School activities for the children. On Friday of that week, if you have sponsored a child, your child (usually with his or her mother) will be brought to Quito, and you will be able to spend the entire day with them. This day will be spent sightseeing and taking in all that Quito has to offer. Scott Rawlings, Associate Pastor So even if you have not sponsored a Compassion child, this trip will be perfect for you. We are going to have an informational meeting on Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in Asbury Hall. You can also get more information at our website at www.stpkaty.org. Click on the Ecuador slide or click on the Register for Events button and you will see a link for the Ecuador trip. I would love for you to be a part of this wonderful trip where we are connecting the world with God’s love. Second, I would like to invite everyone to an authentic Passover Seder meal on Good Friday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Lott Hall. We can seat only 168 people, so please sign up today by clicking Register for Events on our website. The price for tickets will be $20 a person, and all proceeds will go to Student Ministries. A member of the element who is a world-renowned chef (at least in my mind he is since he has traveled the world as far as Guatemala with me) will be cooking lamb for our meal. So we are going to make this as authentic as possible (minus the wine … sorry people!) During the registration process, you will be asked if you would like lamb or tilapia for your meal. Also, we will be serving baklava, a wonderful Middle Eastern dessert. Members of our Student Ministries will be serving us as we spend about an hour participating in the Seder meal and placing ourselves in the Israelites’ shoes as they struggled with slavery and then experienced freedom. Many of the things we will do during this Seder meal will be similar to what Jesus experienced, and some things have become traditions from the time after Christ. This will be my first time leading a service like this, even though I have participated in a couple, so I am pretty excited. If anything, you will learn so much more about the Jewish culture and about Jesus Christ, and you will be eating some unbelievable food in the process. Plus our Student Ministries will benefit, so sign up today and be a part of something wonderful. God bless,

Our plan is to have this event following Sunday 11:00 worship in mid-February. We will make sure you receive sufficient notice of this event. The Building Committee and Board of Trustees are finalizing the construction plans with Hoar Construction and should be ready to release the final drawings soon. I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our District Superintendent, Pat Sparks, for his outstanding service to St. Peter’s during the past two months. Pat was an inspiration for much of the staff and was always available to talk. I especially appreciated the time Pat afforded me to listen to my ideas and the encouragement he provided during a difficult period. I am so confident that things happen for the best, and we are fortunate that the congregation and leadership of St. Peter’s have set us on a path to fulfill our mission. As part of this space in our newsletter, I am very pleased to recognize Elaine Saunders, St. Peter’s Communications Coordinator. Elaine has been a member of St. Peter’s since 1995 and joined the staff in 2005. Much of what you see and read from St. Peter’s is the product of Elaine’s

As always, I welcome your comments/suggestions, etc. Please let me

know if there is anything we can do to make your St. Peter’s experience better.

As you meet Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, Naomi, Daniel, Peter, and the unnamed woman, you will discover that God wants to be just as intimately involved in your story, offering an identity that shines with the purpose for which you were created. We will meet Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in E106. Register at stpkaty.org or by calling the church office at (281) 492-8031.

Monthly Mission Activities February Mission Focus. Our mission focus this month is Servefest and UMCOR Cleaning Kits. Please visit the Missions table in the Lobby this Sunday for more information on each of these missions. Servefest is a Katy-area service program that will be working on Feb. 16 and 23 at Katy YMCA’s Camp Cinco, Hip Hop Hope in Brookshire, neighborhood homes and at Habitat for Humanity in Richmond. You can sign up online for one or both Saturdays. We are also focusing on UMCOR Cleaning Kits to help replenish the Sager Brown relief supply depot. We invite you to make kits at home and bring them back this month. We will have a sample kit and complete information at the Missions table in the Lobby or you can visit the Missions page at www.stpkaty.org.

Get Involved in Missions. The Missions Team is looking for new members. If you have an interest in planning and leading mission opportunities at St. Peter’s, please consider joining our team. Several key events always need planners and leaders, including our local Church Without Walls and our international mission, Compassion International. We also provide a mission focus each month and need people with a passion or knowledge of that program to help us organize it and provide information to the congregation. If you would like to be a part of this exciting ministry, please contact Bill Land at [email protected] or (281) 492-8031, ext. 366.
