EPA Lead-Safe Certification According to the EPA 2008 Lead Rule, anyone who disturbs greater than 20 square feet of lead-based paint on an exterior wall, or disturbs an area greater than 6 square feet of interior paint per room, needs to be trained in lead-safe work practices. Kaplan’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program gives you all the information, training, and forms you need to comply with this federal requirement. This hands-on course will walk you through job setup, lead-safe construction techniques, and the proper methods for jobsite cleanup and verification.

Contractor Licensing How to Pass the Minnesota Contractor Licensing Exam To obtain a Minnesota Residential Building Contractor License, you must pass an exam administered by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. The exam covers Minnesota laws and business practices plus construction techniques and building code requirements. How to Pass the Minnesota Contractor Licensing Exam covers everything you need to know to pass the exams. This course takes a comprehensive in-depth approach to cover all the exam content, preparing you for what’s on the exam and how to study for it. Using a series of practical, easy-to-follow steps, our knowledgeable instructors cover critical content from employment laws and OSHA to financial statements, admixtures, nailing schedules, and building code requirements. The exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions, and a score of 70% or greater is required to pass. Applicants are given four hours to complete the exam, which includes questions on Minnesota laws and business practices, plus construction techniques and building code requirements. A copy of the State Building Code will be provided for reference during the exam.

EPA Lead-Safe Certification Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program (RRP)* This is a federal regulatory program affecting contractors, property managers, and others who disturb lead-based paint. This program was enacted by the EPA 2008 Lead Rule. The EPA has increased enforcement of the rule by finding and fining non-compliant contractors. This rule applies to anyone who is paid to perform work that disturbs paint in housing and child care facilities built before 1978, such as: • Residential rental property owners and managers • General contractors • Special trade contractors, including:

– Painters

– Carpenters



– Plumbers

– Electricians

This work includes such activities that disturb greater than 6 square feet of interior paint per room inside, or activities that disturb greater than 20 square feet on the exterior. This work also includes window replacement and projects involving demolition. Generally this work includes, but is not limited to, the following: • Remodeling, repair, and maintenance

• Painting

• Electrical

• Carpentry

• Plumbing

• Window replacement

In many municipalities, prime contractors need to show their certification before pulling a permit. The EPA can levy fines up to $37,500 per day, per incident. Energy hour will be offered free of charge to contractors taking this course. Check www.KapRE.com/Contractor-HI for class availability.

Exam & Certification Registration Contractor Licensing Exam The State of Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry offers four types of contractor licenses: - Residential Building Contractor

- Residential Roofer

- Residential Remodeler

- Manufactured Home Installer

To qualify to become a licensed MN Residential Building Contractor, individuals must pass the Residential Construction Contractor Exam. The exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions, and a score of 70% or greater is required to pass. Applicants are given four hours to complete the exam, which includes questions on Minnesota laws and business practices plus construction techniques and building code requirements. A copy of the State Building Code will be provided for reference during the exam. There are no prerequisite experience or educational requirements to take the residential building contractor or remodeler exam. You can apply online or submit an application to CCLD along with the required $50 exam application fee. The exam is offered at DLI’s offices in St. Paul, as well as sites in Duluth, St. Cloud, Detroit Lakes, Granite Falls, and Owatonna. EPA Lead-Safe Certification Individuals must successfully complete an 8-hour initial renovator training course offered by an accredited training provider. This training includes a hands-on training component, as well as an exam which is administered by the education provider. Upon successful completion of the course, individuals will be given a certificate of completion with a unique identification number showing you have received the mandatory training. Home Inspection National Exam While there are no licensing exam requirements to become a private home inspector in Minnesota, individuals may wish to become licensed nationally. Individuals can become licensed nationally by taking the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE). By taking this exam, you will be able to assess your skill, knowledge, and experience against national standards. These standards need to be met to join many of the Home Inspection Associations.
