INTRODUCTION British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the voice for sport, fitness and physical activity on university campuses. It provides a comprehensive, multi-sport competition structure and manages the development of programmes, services and facilities for participative, grass-roots sports through to elite, high-performance athletes. Working with students, athletic union staff and elected officers as well as professional sporting staff, coaches and volunteers from over 150 higher education institutions, BUCS aims to improve the sporting offer to students, staff and communities. Additionally, an important activity in doing so is raising the profile of university sport within government, sports governing bodies and the media.
Its identity and how it is used on all materials is integral to building the image and reputation of the organisation and therefore its ability to achieve its objectives. It is very important that everyone who uses the BUCS Logo understands the elements that comprise the BUCS Corporate Identity and how to use them. On the following pages are a series of guidelines that govern their use. 01 BUCS LOGO AND BUCS SHIELD Clear Space
A ‘clear space’ is a minimum area around the BUCS Logo or BUCS Shield that must always be kept free of any type or graphic elements for visibility reasons. 1x sets the inner limit in this instance (defined by the distance between the bottom of the ‘C’ at the left hand edge of the BUCS Shield to the base of the BUCS Shield.)
Minimum Size Bellow is the minimum size at which the BUCS Logo with the legend can be used in order to ensure legibility of the full corporate name in most instances: 10mm

02 COLOURS Primary Colours
BUCS Red is the primary corporate colour and should be used as often as possible and should never be lighter than 100%. Three other supporting colours may be used: BUCS Blue, BUCS Gold and White. No other colours should be used as primary colours.

02 COLOURS Gradients
Where gradients are used, the BUCS Red Gradient is the primary and preferred choice. The specifications for both the darkest and lightest points are shown below.
BUCS Red Gradient. Used as a graphic element in backgrounds. It is the MAIN BUCS Gradient.
BUCS Gold Gradient. Used in gradient versions of the logo ONLY.

BUCS Red Gradient can be used either as a linear or radial gradient; the radial version being preferred above the linear version.

Bank Gothic: Caps Bank Gothic is one of the two BUCS corporate typefaces. When it is used, it should only be used for headlines and not for body copy.

Helvetica Neue Light Helvetica Neue is the main BUCS corporate typeface to be used for headings (where it is more suitable than Bank Gothic), subheadings, body copy (where Helvetica Light is the preferred font) and italic, which can be used for captions, or highlighting other text or words.

04 USAGE Embroidery Don’t use other BUCS Shield Gradient versions other than the flat colour specified for embroidery. 55mm
Don’t add any elements. 60mm
NORTH Logo version: The Flat Colour BUCS Shield is the only version that should be used for embroidery.
Don’t use the BUCS Shield any smaller than the specified size.
Minimum Size: 55mm x 60mm is the smallest BUCS Shield size that can be used for embroidery. Remember to leave the correct clear space.

04 USAGE Reproduction
The full colour BUCS Gradient versions of the logo or Shield should be use as the main options for CMYK and screen reproduction.
The greyscale gradient versions can be used for black and white materials. Example: black and white newspaper ads or articles.
Example: newspaper ads, magazines, posters, websites, Porwerpoint presentations.

04 USAGE Reproduction
When colour reproduction is limited, the flat, PANTONE® colours version can be used. Example: embroidery.
The flat black BUCS Logo or Shield should be used only in special cases that don’t allow either more than one colour or gradation to be used. Examples: embossing, trophies, faxes.
