our mission

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING Jordan Maddex CONTRIBUTING WRITER Sarah Schreiter Harvey

Thanks to the vision a few entrepreneurs have for taking private aviation to new heights, and the hundreds of millions of dollars their companies are pouring into these new ventures, space tourism will soon become a reality. This push by private companies today to conquer the new frontier of personal space travel is awesome. Yes, "awesome" is the only word to describe what we're on the cusp of experiencing. While it’d be thrilling for us to be part of this personal space race (Jet Linx Galactic does have a great ring to it!), our focus remains on the countless opportunities we have right here on earth to provide a private jet service and experience unparalleled in this universe. While our mission may sound simple in comparison to commercial space travel, the plan we have and the goals we’ve set are equal in ambition to those companies now reaching for the stars. Our mission here on earth, specifically in 14 U.S. locations today (and growing), is to personally serve and exceed the expectations of our local clients on each and every flight. Our drive to exceed the needs of our clients, no matter how lofty the request, pushes us daily to improve as an organization. Through the successful, local delivery of our industry-leading programs, our team experiences a feeling of satisfaction equal in comparison to sending space travelers to the moon – we truly love what we do. Although our business plan today does not include space tourism, I wouldn’t put it past our team to try to reach for those same stars someday. But in the meantime, we’ll continue with our mission here on earth – to personally serve you. Sincerely,

Jamie Walker President & CEO, Jet Linx Aviation

// TRAINING Every Jet Linx pilot completes an initial training when hired, and a recurrent training every year. Captains have a six-month instrument competency check as well. With the amount of training required, it is important to note that Jet Linx has negotiated for the best training rates with our partner FlightSafety. “We get more training dollars per hour than you can get anywhere everywhere else,” said Mike Kopp, Jet Linx Aviation Director of Operations. “A lot of operators will go with two simulator training sessions and a check ride, but we do three simulator training sessions and a check ride without any additional cost.” PICs also complete four hours of ground school and a practice simulator session before a check ride, at no cost above just the check ride. “That is additional training at no extra cost, that

Jet Linx is able to select a training plan that is most cost effective for each pilot, whether they are a PIC, a Second in Command (SIC), or if they fly multiple aircraft types. Training costs are negotiated on every level, including volume discounts based on the types of aircraft in the Jet Linx fleet. “For example, we have a lot of Beechjets,” said Jes Wingad, Jet Linx Aviation Training Manager. “So

• Flight Coordination reviews the flight – Specific weather information is available – Pilot crew duty time from the day prior to the trip is reviewed to ensure proper duty time & rest requirements – “Ops review,” including master summary of any potential for changing details, is sent to internal teams • Fleet Optimization works through details with off-fleet partners • Client Services reviews flight information with Jet Card clients and aircraft owners • Maintenance teams approve the airworthiness for each trip • Pilots officially accept the trip after receiving a flight brief • Flight Coordination and crew review outstanding operational questions, like weather, runway limitations, or NOTAMs (Notice to All Airmen, with timely information for the flight) • Passenger count or airport changes require a new crew brief from Flight Coordination

THE OPS REVIEW “At that 24-hour standpoint, every trip receives an ‘ops review,’” said Meric Reese, Flight Coordination Manager. “That is sent to Client Services and Fleet Optimization, and Charter if it’s a wholesale trip.” The ops review is sort of a master summary of any detail that could change, or anything that could possibly affect the flight. “It has every potential issue we may have with the trip that’s going to happen tomorrow. It’s a summary of weather, NOTAMs, any restrictions we might face, and any alternate plans that we might need to make,” he said. “It’s a recommendation of adjusting a departure time, or planning for an alternate airport if we can’t get into the primary airport – so Client Services can arrange for ground transportation; things like that. We provide that for every trip.” Just as Client Services addresses the ops review with aircraft owners and Jet Card clients, the Charter team will review the same with wholesale clients. “Charter sends out a final itinerary to the brokers and addressing any concerns raised from the ops review,” Reese noted.

IN 2016, FLIGHTSAFETY CELEBRATES 65 YEARS OF TRAINING EXCELLENCE.

“The best safety device in any aircraft is a well-trained crew.” This maxim was more than just words to A.L. Ueltschi: it was a way of life. Ueltschi founded FlightSafety International in 1951, in order to help build a culture of safety in the industry he loved. When Ueltschi founded FlightSafety, business aviation was in its infancy. A handful of corporate pilots flew converted military aircraft for industry leaders and wealthy individuals. These pilots, unlike their commercial airline counterparts, did not have and were not required to undergo any formal training. “All of us with FlightSafety are pleased and proud to serve Jet Linx,” said Bruce Whitman, Chairman, President and CEO. “We appreciate the trust they have placed in us, and are committed to continuously provide the highest quality training and outstanding services Jet Linx deserves and expects.” “Today, FlightSafety conducts over 1.4 million hours of training each year. It is delivered by our 1,800 instructors at more than 40 centers throughout the world,” said Steve Gross, Senior Vice President, Commercial. “We want to make sure that every pilot, maintenance technician, flight attendant, and dispatcher has the information and training needed to operate or support their aircraft safely and efficiently.” FlightSafety is the preferred training partner for Jet Linx Aviation: read on to learn more about their dedication to ensuring that every pilot has the best training possible. >>

“We’ve had such a long-lasting relationship with them that they understand what our training goals are, because we ask them to train above and beyond what is in the training program. For example, we ask for additional training for crewmembers in the simulator for specific airports such as Aspen and Eagle, where we have a tremendous amount of flights.”

“The majority of my personal experience is with FlightSafety, which includes a Falcon 900 type rating; Falcon 50; Hawker 800XP, 850, and 900; and then the Lear 45. Every facility I go to, I see a consistent quality in the training, and I’m very impressed.”

“We have a great working relationship with FlightSafety and we chose them as our preferred training provider because while we have diversity in our fleet, FlightSafety has as much diversity and as much ability to train as any other training center or provider. Gross recalled a time when the training program for an airplane with newer avionics had a higher than normal failure rate with pilots new to the type. “We stopped and looked at the program and asked, ‘What’s going wrong here?’” he remembered. The class had been structured with aircraft systems the first week, then avionics, then simulator time. “We actually had to turn that whole program nose-to-tail, and we learned that we had to start the pilots on the avionics day one.” FlightSafety’s organizational knowledge of how a pilot or a

In order to make sure that pilots are scheduled in a timely fashion, the teams stay in close contact. “We maintain constant communication with them,” Kopp said. “We have a phone call every single week with FlightSafety – with our Talent Acquisition team, with our training manager, with myself. We go through what’s been requested, where do we need slots available, and what do we need to move. Today, the training has less of a system-by-system approach, and uses flight profiles instead. “It’s like the beginning to end of a particular trip, where everything is incorporated: from the preflight planning and the preflight inspection of the airplane, to the line and the cockpit checks,” Kopp said. “Then there will be this electrical system issue, and this hydraulic system issue, and you train on the systems as if these things were occurring in a real-life scenario.” This allows the pilots to cover much more ground during one training session.

Jet Linx pilots complete intensive groundschool and rigorous training sessions in full flight simulators,” said Gross. “The advanced technology simulators and other advanced training devices replicate an aircraft’s performance characteristics. TODAY IS A GOOD DAY

LIVING A PRODUCTIVE LIFE IN THE FACE OF CANCER Today is a good day. That’s the name and founding philosophy of the foundation founded by Bob Sharpe and his wife, Deborah. After Sharpe received what could have been a devastating diagnosis – glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer – at age 62, he decided, as he said, that “being sad, disappointed, bitter, or worried were unproductive.”

Sharpe’s quick with a smile and a kind word, and possesses one of those unique auras that immediately puts you at ease when you talk to him. A successful businessman, he delights in relating the accomplishments of Rancho Sahuarita, but Sharpe paused when asked what was next on his agenda. “My new goal is to cure cancer,” he said, quietly, yet firmly. “For over 20 years I have been an active participant in the Urban Land Institute (ULI), which is the premier real estate think-tank whose members implement best practices in creating communities,” Sharpe recalled. A past ULI trustee, Sharpe currently serves as the Council Counselor for the Community Development Councils, a governor, a national program committee member, and an executive board member of ULI’s Arizona District Council. “My mission for over 20 years has been focused on trying to create a better life for people by building a great place to live,” he smiled. Sharpe has been a managing partner in more than 50 real estate ventures, and has sold over 10,000 lots in the Tucson area. His current project, Rancho Sahuarita, began as around 3,000 acres of dormant south of Tucson, and his vision, he said, was simple. “Our mission is to create a better life for the rest of our community,” Sharpe explained. “We made it our employees’ motto, too. I was trying to build a better place for people to live.” With six schools (and another on the way), clubhouses, a water park, and numerous other amenities, it’s no surprise that the community has been well received. “We wanted to create a healthy place. Rancho Sahuarita was recognized as one of 13 projects in the world that represented

66 // J E T L I N X . C O M

the best practices in terms of creating a healthy place, and in 2008 ABC News Nightline did a segment on ‘The Last American Boomtown,’ and they picked Rancho Sahuarita,” he recalled. “That year, we were the number one best-selling community in Arizona, which is shocking considering that Tucson is 1/5 the size of Phoenix.” Rancho Sahuarita has received its share of awards: in 2015, Sahuarita ranked #29 on Money magazine’s top 50 best places to live list, and in 2014 Rancho Sahuarita was named Project of the Decade in Southern Arizona by the Metropolitan Pima Alliance. “I accepted the [Project of the Decade] award at a black-tie dinner with 300 people attending, and it was one of the highlights of my life, after 20 years of perseverance and lots of luck,” Sharpe recalled. The world was wide open to Sharpe when he received his brain cancer diagnosis in March 2015. Originally given four to 15 months to live, with a 2% chance of survival after that, Sharpe has truly beaten the odds to be where he is today. “After my terminal diagnosis, I quickly concluded that I had everything to gain by spending the remaining days of my life having an optimistic, positive and grateful attitude, being thoughtful and encouraging, and doing things that bring joy, happiness, and fulfillment to others,” he mused. “Improving the lives of others is inspirational and makes my life more productive and meaningful.” >>

The Jet Linx family was glued to the last round of the PGA Championship July 31, as friend and client Jimmy Walker brought home his first major. Walker and Jason Day kept it close during the final round, with Day (who played one group ahead) walking off the course one shot behind Walker after an eagle on the final hole. Walker sunk a difficult par on the 18th to stay ahead of Day and claim his first major championship on the PGA Tour. A friend of Jet Linx and a client of our San Antonio Base, the team at Jet Linx is proud to support him on tour and in his demanding travel schedule. Tom Northington, Jet Linx San Antonio Base Partner and President, first introduced Walker to Jet Linx because “his need for travel from tournament to tournament was a perfect fit for our

business.” The on demand, personal nature of Jet Linx’s private jet service plus a private, local terminal in Walker’s hometown makes travel convenient, comfortable and specifically catered to the needs of Walker and his family. "Flying private with Jet Linx makes sense, especially when flying to spots that are hard to get to," noted Walker. "It's easier on my family, easier on everybody, and it sure is convenient. With our schedule, it changes daily, sometimes hourly, and Jet Linx is great about getting us what we need when we need it." “We’ll be there every step of the way,” said Tom Northington, Jet Linx San Antonio Base President and Partner. “Jimmy is a special guy, a gifted golfer, and a friend to everyone at Jet Linx.” Cheers to your continued success, Jimmy!

MAN HAS LOOKED TO SKY AND DREAMED OF TRAVELING THROUGH THE AIR SINCE THE BEGINNING OF MANKIND – ANCIENT LEGENDS OF GODS WITH WINGED FEET, AND THE FAILED FLIGHT OF ICARUS SHOW US EARLY LONGING FOR FLIGHT. From the story of Wan-Hoo, who attempted flight to the moon in a wicker chair attached to 47 rockets, to the 15th century designs for military rockets by Joanes de Fontana, attempts at spaceflight began almost as early as man could dream of it. Today, dreams are closer to reality than ever before – and for a select few with the cash to finance it, that reality is here. Space tourism isn’t here for everyone, yet, but it’s no longer

Both enjoy astrophotography, as well as studying the history of space travel – and keeping their eyes on what’s coming next. “I think there are a lot of people who want to go up into space, but who don’t want to spend the $20-40 million to go up there,” Donohue said. “That’s kind of what Virgin Galactic’s plan is.” Virgin Galactic, advertised as, “the world’s first commercial spaceline,” gives captivating headlines: “Ready To Become an Astronaut?” or “Only 553 people have been to space. Virgin Galactic is opening space to the rest of us.” A seat with Virgin Galactic “and membership of the Future Astronaut community” carries a price tag of $250,000 as a deposit. For that, SpaceShipTwo, carried by WhiteKnightTwo, will launch passengers above the NASA and US Air Force threshold of 50 miles (80 kilometers) and the Kármán line of 62 miles (100) kilometers so passengers earn their astronaut wings.

THE SPACE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE “As SpaceShipTwo coasts up into space, our astronauts will leave their seats and experience true, unencumbered weightlessness. THE PLAYERS IN THE RACE TO

COMMERCIAL SPACE TRAVEL // BLUE ORIGIN Founded by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin is based in Kent, Washington. The company has slowly shifted its focus from suborbital to orbital flight, and in 2015, announced plans to manufacture and fly its orbital launch vehicle from Florida Space Coast. // BOEING Yes, “that” Boeing! Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is one of the company’s five divisions. Its portfolio includes manned and unmanned aircraft programs, space and satellite systems, intelligence and security systems, and extensive integration expertise. BDS is a $30 billion business with about 50,000 employees worldwide. // SPACE ADVENTURES Space Adventures offers space camps and astronaut training, but is planning to offer travel around the moon on a 10-day space journey. The company was founded in 1998, and boasts that its clients have cumulatively spent close to three months in space and traveled over 36 million miles. // SPACEX Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX designs, manufacturers, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. Its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy craft launch from Cape Canaveral, and the company has boasted successful missions launching spacecraft and satellites into space. // VIRGIN GALACTIC Called “The First Commercial Spaceline,” Virgin Galactic and its enigmatic founder Richard Branson have sold ($200,000) tickets to more than 700 people for a two-hour spaceflight – including Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Bieber, and Tom Hanks. Of course, they’ve also handled the in-flight entertainment: the company has announced that Lady Gaga will be scheduled to perform on a Galactic flight. // WORLD VIEW Although its silhouette is familiar, the vehicle preferred by World View might seem an odd choice for space travel. The stratollites, as they’re called, resemble a transparent, jellyfish-like hot air balloon, can reach an altitude of up to 46 km and haul a payload capacity of up to 4,500 kg.

WHAT'S NEW WITH

NOULLI

The Noulli Nation is taking shape – you can be a part of this upcoming private aviation community.

Private jet travel just got a lot more flexible! Introducing Noulli – a new private jet service, born out of the innovative minds at Jet Linx Aviation – and complementary to Jet Linx clients! The service can be used on its own, or in tandem with Jet Card or aircraft management solutions. Noulli is on a mission to make air travel enjoyable again, by offering the most affordable and flexible option for flying private. Noulli is here to revolutionize the way people travel. Noulli offers a new way to book private jet travel, solving a longtime frustration: being able to book your private jet travel on a per-seat basis, instead of the entire aircraft – and being charged accordingly. “Being able to share an aircraft, or ‘jetpool,’ is something our clients have asked for,” said Jamie Walker, Jet Linx Aviation President & CEO and Founder of Noulli. “Noulli makes it easy to find others to share a jet with you, reducing the cost per traveler. The entire process is stressfree.” Noulli is the first network of like-minded travelers to coordinate and book private flights for multiple passengers on a per-seat basis. Noulli is truly the easiest and most costeffective way to fly privately.

90 // J E T L I N X . C O M

Members wanting to share a flight log into the Noulli website, and select their trip details: departure and arrival airports, the day they’d like to travel, and an approximate time they would like to depart. “There’s a comments section, and you can say something like, ‘I set the time for 6:00 p.m. but I’m willing to leave as early as 2:00 p.m.,’” said Elizabeth Schneider, Noulli Travel Concierge. “That way, if someone is interested in the flight but wants to leave at a slightly different time, there is some flexibility.” Trips fulfilled with light jets, which traditionally seat up to six

behind the name noulli

The name Noulli has deep roots in the science of aviation, specifically in the concept of Bernoulli's principle. Bernoulli's principle can be used to calculate the lift force on an airfoil, if the behavior of the fluid flow in the vicinity of the foil is known. For example, if the air flowing past the top surface of an aircraft wing is moving faster than the air flowing past the bottom surface, then Bernoulli's principle implies that the pressure on the surfaces of the wing will be lower above than below. This pressure difference results in an upwards lifting force.

passengers, and the trip creator selects how many seats he will use. “After you select your trip details, you click ‘quote flight’ and select how many passengers must book the flight before it will be fulfilled – whether it’s two, or three, or six – and it adjusts the price accordingly. If you choose that you’ll use two seats, then it will say you’ll pay this price based on the total number of seats filled,” Schneider explained: the more passengers on the flight, the lower the price per passenger. “You’ll know that if you have two seats and only three seats are filled, you’ll pay this price.” The trip creator sets the minimum number of seats needed to be filled, based on his desired >>

WITH THOMAS ARVID Thomas Arvid is surrounded by inspiration at his home wine cellar (right). His passion for wine and incredible skill can be seen in his completed paintings (such as "Bin There," shown above) that are coveted by galleries and collectors across the country and the world. "Wine is a great subject because people are familiar with it; they really connect to it. My paintings are really the landscapes between people sharing wine – it's amazing that my collectors find personal fulfillment in my work, especially when I'm just doing what I love," Arvid said. He dazzled guests at the Jet Linx Atlanta event with a live demonstration (below).

1) A LEGACY OF LUXURY The event at Jet Linx Atlanta featured two static displays, including the new Legacy 500 from Embraer Executive Jets (check out our story on page 108 for more on this aircraft!). The jet dazzled guests, who sipped cocktails on the ramp and had the chance to explore the interior of the jet for conversation.

2) DETAILED EXPLANATION Thomas Arvid is known for the precision and detail in his works, characteristics that have earned him the title "America's preeminent painter of wine." With a glass of Silver Oak in hand, Arvid spoke to the crowd about his artistic process and his favorite subject – wine!

3) A TALENTED TEAM Members of the Jet Linx Atlanta team were on hand at the event to mingle with current clients and meet potential members. From left to right: Natalie Snodgrass, Client Services Specialist; Beau Freeman, DIrector of Jet Card Sales; Chandler Hartley, Client Services Specialist; and Tami Reynolds, Client Services Specailist.

4) COME TOGETHER Jay Vidlak (center, with Base Partner John Snodgrass, left), Executive Vice President at the Jet Linx National Operations Center, joined Jet Linx Atlanta for the event. "Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy Thomas and his beautiful art collection on display," Vidlak commented. "His passion for what he does is obvious, stunning, and infectious!"

5) A SPECIAL SURPRISE Thomas Arvid, who is soon moving from Atlanta to the islands of Hawaii, was surprised by a longtime friend and the Jet Linx team with a special send-off – a ukulele made of Kona wood. The gesture brought many smiles to the artist as he proudly displayed the gift. The back reads, "From all your fans in Georgia – Mahalo!”

6) PHENOMENAL RESPONSE Also on display at the August event, a Phenom 300. Beau Freeman, Jet Linx Atlanta Director of Jet Card Sales, noted the warm reception to the special event. "As one client put it, 'art, wine, and airplanes…. my three favorite things!'" he exclaimed. "We were excited to bring these elements together for a memorable night."

JUST IN CASE Beautifully in focus, “Just In Case” demonstrates Arvid’s flawless mastery of composition. The artful jumble of corks presents a harmonious juxtaposition of order and chaos brought to life by Arvid’s unerring ability to use light, texture and depth to his advantage. Accepting the invitation to savor the symphony of details, we savor the final few sips and look with pleasure on the collection of memories laid before us.

O WHAT A NIGHT In exquisite detail, Arvid introduces us to a whole new world of wine. Evoking the ethereal beauty of the Willamette Valley, the contrast of soft blues and golden browns echoes the rolling vistas of Oregon vineyards. With three great bottles to share, reminiscing about a great trip is the best part of the evening... “O What a Night” indeed!

CURRENT WORKS of THOMAS ARVID

IN GOOD TIME Savoring the last glass of an old favorite provokes an interesting dilemma... continue the celebration or save the last bottle? With the rich crimson in the glass and fresh stain on the cork you can taste the nostalgia of that first night years ago. Resisting the temptation to keep the memory going, the final bottle remains just out of reach, reminding us that all things come “In Good Time.”

WELL TRAVELLED A worldly celebration, “Well Travelled” captures the rare opportunity to savor the best of three continents. Golden threads in earthy granite cast an old world charm on a modern setting, an enviable sampling of newly accomplished and traditionally honored estates. With a big night ahead and friends ready to share, the only journey to make is one to the cellar. Collected throughout the country and abroad, Arvid’s art inspires international acclaim with its ability to evoke memories beyond the canvas.

Molly Brady While each and every event has been special, I most enjoyed the horse show at Upperville. I learned a lot about the sport and now share a passion for both the owners of the horses and the jumpers! It was an honor to be part of such a historic event. I grew to love the Upperville/Middleburg area and it was a breath of fresh air to get out of the DC traffic for a week and mingle with the horse show's finest. I look forward to attending again next year!

A DREAM TERMINAL AT DULLES The Jet Linx private terminal at Dulles International Airport (IAD) offers comfort and a place to unwind.

Jet Linx offers our clients something often overlooked in private jet travel through third-party FBOs – actual privacy. "You really can't get more private than our Dulles terminal in the DC area," said Molly Brady, Direct of Jet Card Sales for Jet Linx DC. "Our members and aircraft owners enjoy the space before and after their flights as if it was their own home." The DC team takes great pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere for Jet Linx clients and their guests in a space with a very modern yet friendly feel. "We often cater lunches for business meetings, pour afternoon cocktails preflight or provide morning breakfasts including a bloody mary bar to get your vacation started! It doesn't feel like a terminal at all!" The private terminal at Dulles offers many of the comforts of home, including Wifi and a bar stocked with beverages and snacks. In fact, the kitchen-esque features in the space exert the same influence as they might in your own home. "I notice when our passengers come in they tend to 'hang in the kitchen' first before relaxing on our couches and watching TV, which makes me laugh and think – isn't that what usually happens when you visit someone else's home?!" laughed Brady.

For the average pilot, [NextGen] has become ADS-B Out, because that’s its first mandate, but worldwide it has all different meanings. dr. woody saland, director of avionics programs & pilot training, dassault falcon jet corporation

what is nextgen?

The phrase NextGen is used to refer to a wide group of initiatives the FAA is implementing in stages, starting in 2012 and going through 2025. The overall goal of the NextGen program, or programs, is multifold: as a whole, NextGen will relieve air traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and improve location and communication technologies. “If you’re flying just domestically, NextGen affects business jets really only with the first mandate, which

When the Wright Brothers first took flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the aircraft they used was built largely of wood and fabric, with a homemade engine. Indulge for a moment in the idea of Wilbur and Orville seeing a modern-day private jet: the awe of seeing the shape, the luxurious interior, and all of the technical specifications. Modern-day range and flight capabilities have advanced tremendously – and new safety requirements, like NextGen, are far removed from the technology available to the early pioneers of aviation. Take a look at current flight technology, like the NextGen requirements, and then see how some of today’s aircraft are incorporating those technologies while paving the way toward the aircraft of the future.

today is ADS-B [Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast] Out by 2020,” said Dr. Woody Saland, Director of Avionics Programs and Pilot Training at Dassault Falcon Jet Corporation. Dr. Saland, a typed and rated pilot, holds a PhD in aerospace engineering and works with teams across the company. An industry veteran, he has seen the mandates and programs change and grow in the United States and abroad. “For the average pilot, [NextGen] has become ADS-B Out, because that’s its first mandate, but worldwide it has all different meanings,” he explained. ADS-B Out lets aircraft broadcast information to other aircraft and Air Traffic Control; ADS-B In allows the aircraft to receive broadcasted information. “Europe has Single European Sky, and other initiatives, and ADS-B is required now in Australia across the entire continent. Our Falcons go worldwide and we’ve got to be able to accommodate

both mandates and technologies worldwide. It’s a bigger program and a different concept sometimes than just the United States.” “ADS-B Out is an evolutionary step in communication between the aircraft and other airspace consumers. Current transponders enable ATC and other aircraft to know your aircraft's relative position and altitude. ADS-B adds important information to help project and prevent traffic conflicts by estimating intent," explained Jake Biggs, Textron Aviation's aftermarket engineering manager. The FAA refers to ADS-B as the future of air traffic control and the backbone of the NextGen system. GPS satellite signals determine ground speed, aircraft location and more, while also sending traffic and weather information to the aircraft. “It’s going to give

>> As of April 2016, more than 18,000 general aviation aircraft and 510 commercial aircraft have been equipped with ADS-B Out avionics, and aircraft operating in most of the United States’ controlled airspace will need to be equipped for the technology by January 1, 2020. The FAA announced in June that it would offer a rebate program to offset some cost of the equipment. “To further demonstrate our commitment to NextGen, we will soon offer some general aviation aircraft owners a $500 rebate to help defray some of the cost for purchasing ADS-B Out avionics,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, in a statement from the FAA. To be eligible for the rebate, the aircraft must be a fixed-wing, single-engine piston aircraft, registered in the United States before January 1, 2016; however, most business jets have more than one engine and will not qualify for the rebate. Even though other components of the NextGen program may not affect the airplane’s avionics, they’ll still have a lasting effect on how airplanes are flown in the United States. “From an end-user point of view, I think the biggest thing that NextGen has to offer is a more efficient air traffic control system,” Saland explained. “There’s a NextGen component called SWIM, Surface Wide Information Management, at all the centers, that has nothing to do with the airplanes: it has to do with the modernization of the ATC system.” Additionally, clearance systems will start to use Controller Pilot Data Link Communications-Departure Clearance. “They’re rolling out, for instance, at Teterboro, a DCL where the clearances are coming in directly from ATC right to the cockpit,” he noted. “They’ve had PDC, pre-departure clearances, always available, but that was secondhand from your service provider. This new rollout of DCL will be the first time FANS [Future Air Navigation System]

THE BEST VIEW

THE SKY CAN OFFER Seeing the view from the airplane can be one of the best parts of the trip – so why not soak in as much scenery as possible! The design team at Embraer Executive Jets took on an exciting challenge in creating the “Airship Kyoto” concept for its Lineage 1000 – and completed it masterfully, including a window the size of a standard airplane door to allow for an abundance of natural light. “The Kyoto Airship project was inspired by our quest to personalize a customer’s aircraft to the extreme resemblance of their style,” said Jay Beever, Vice President of Interior Design, Embraer Executive Jets. “While personal styles in homes, cars, and yachts have a higher degree of feasibility than in an aircraft cruising at Mach 80 or above, due to airworthiness certification limitations, Embraer leveraged its experience with Maritime Patrol aircraft to create a viable project for a figurative customer who would want their aircraft to reflect their personal style, to the last detail.” The project took off when Beever worked with Boat International and Yacht Designer Patrick Knowles to develop an aircraft that would challenge status quo of aircraft design and passenger experience (seated facing forward or aft in a standard aircraft seat) and allow Japanese passengers to have an experience that they could have at home or on their yacht.

THE NEXT GENERATION

FALCON 8X

BY THE NUMBERS 3 engines 42.67 feet – cabin length, excluding cockpit & baggage 74 inches – maximum headroom Over 30 possible cabin layouts 12 passengers **

ABOUT THE FALCON 8X The Dassault Falcon 8X debuted at the end of 2014, with a cabin over 3 feet longer than its 7X predecessor. The Dassault team made innovation a key factor in the design of the 8X, making adjustments to all major structures and systems for an efficient airframe. The internal architecture of the wing lightens wing structure and gives more room for fuel. The ultra-long range can handle flights from Hong Kong to Paris, London to Cape Town, and Los Angeles to Beijing. The flight deck features a new generation of Dassault Falcon’s EASy flight deck and offers an optional widescreen head-up display, integrating enhanced and synthetic vision for vastly improved situational awareness in low-visibility conditions. It will also feature Honeywell’s next-generation 3D color weather radar system with enhanced turbulence detection capability. ** based on floor plan http://www.dassaultfalcon.com/en/Aircraft/Models/8X/Pages/ overview.aspx
