Let’s break it down…

CREDIT SYSTEM VS. ACCREDITING BODY Credit System  Provides and/or defines the

CME credit as markers of educational achievement that learners can use for MOC, MOL, membership, etc.  Focus on the quality of the specific CME activities produced

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS (AAFP) CREDIT SYSTEM  American Academy of Family Physicians  Credit system established in 1947  First CME body in the United States  Independent entity, sets its own rules  Recognized by all state licensing boards  Recognized as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM  Recognized by CMS as one of the five bodies whose CME is eligible for

exemption under the Physician Payment Transparency Program (Sunshine Act)

AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AMA) CREDIT SYSTEM  AMA Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA) established in 1968  The AMA PRA Credit System – metric for the PRA  Independent entity, defines the standards and policies for the credit system  As the previous accreditation systems failed to achieve the desired result,

the AMA joined with the ABMS, AHA, AAMC, AHME, CMSS and FSMB to form the ACCME in 1981, and offers deemed status to accredited organizations to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ as long as AMA rules are followed  Recognized by CMS as one of the five bodies whose accreditation or certification requirements and standards make the activity eligible for exemption under the Open Payments Program (also known as National Physicians Payment Transparency Program or Sunshine Act)

THE ACCME  Founded in 1981  Voluntary, self-regulatory system  Accredits organizations directly and recognizes state

medical societies which in turn accredit organizations within their state or region  Once accredited, these organizations are granted the privilege of certifying activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™

requirements by your organization

 ACCME Accreditation is used by the AMA to grant the privilege to

certify activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ as long as all the requirements of the AMA credit system are met  The AMA reserves the right to withdraw an accredited CME provider’s privilege to certify activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ should the accredited CME provider fail to bring the program and activities into compliance with AMA PRA policies, regardless of accreditation status  Funders want evidence of reputability; accreditation helps

THE THREE MAJOR PHYSICIAN CREDIT SYSTEMS American Academy of Family Physicians American Medical Association American Osteopathic Association

CREDIT SYSTEMS: SIMILARITIES  Promote and validate quality, evidence-based medicine for

the betterment of patient health outcomes  Activities must demonstrate how the educational needs and gaps in knowledge were determined  Governed by elected physicians committed to life-long professional development  Compliance with Standards for Commercial Support

CREDIT SYSTEMS: DIFFERENCES  Primary Audience  AAFP - Family physician relevant  AMA – Physicians (MDs, DOs)  AOA - Osteopathic physicians (DOs)who are members of the AOA

 Who Can Claim Credit  AAFP – All physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants  AMA – Physicians only (other health care providers can receive certificates

of participation)

 AOA – DOs. Physicians (MDs) and other health care professionals may

earn credit if their society recognizes Category 1-A or 1-B CME.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.

Formal CME activities approved for AAFP Credit are recognized by the AOA as equivalent to AOA Category 2-A credit. Informal CME activities approved for AAFP Credit are recognized by the AOA as Category 2-B credit.

The AAFP CME Credit System requires providers to comply with the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support.

D.O. members in specialties with <300 board certified members may use up to 15 AMA credits to satisfy the 30 credit 1-A requirement.

ACCME/SMS accredited CME providers may certify CME activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, according to AMA guidelines, and subject to the review of the AMA.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™ are recognized by the AAFP as Elective Credit.

Formal CME activities approved for AAFP Credit are recognized by the AOA as equivalent to AOA Category 2A credit. Informal CME activities approved for AAFP Credit are are recognized by the AOA as Category 2-B credit.

AOA credit may be self-claimed and self-documented by physicians as AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™ if the physicians individually determine that it meets the requirements outlined on page 10 of the AMA PRA booklet.

HOW TO GET IT: AMA PRA CREDIT  Within the US, only organizations accredited by either the

ACCME or a recognized state medical society may certify activities for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM  AMA PRA Category 2 CreditTM is self-claimed and self-documented by physicians  There are some activities for which physicians can receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ directly from the AMA as the owner of the credit system, not as an accredited CME provider:  Teaching at a live activity

Medically related advanced degrees ABMS member board certification and MOC ACGME accredited education

HOW TO GET IT: AOA CME CREDIT  Category 1-A is offered by Category 1-A CME sponsors  Each Category 1-A sponsor is evaluated every three years  Category 1-B credit must have a tie into Osteopathic CME
