MARCH 2018

BY FAITH

On March 4th, we’ve been invited to bring our commitment cards to worship so that we might ask God’s blessings on our plans for giving. I hope you will consider participating in that ritual . . . especially if you’ve never made a commitment to congregation giving before. Sometimes when we complete our giving plan, it feels like we’re being revolutionaries! I don’t know if there’s anything we do that is quite as counter to the prevailing norms of our society as committing to support an organization that works to grow love in our community. That’s essentially what we’re doing. We believe that what happens at Redeemer changes life and helps to make this world a more loving place. That’s something we want to support. When we make our annual commitment to giving, we feel as though we’re making a commitment to everyone at Redeemer to be in this together, to work together for good, to support the kind of change that we believe God hopes to see in the world. In making our commitment to support the work of our congregation, it’s as if we’re saying, “Yes we can . . . change the world . . . together.” Planning to be regular and committed in our giving t is truly an act of faith. None of us knows what the future will hold, but by faith, we trust that God will provide all that is necessary. By faith, we share what is ours, trusting that God will use it for good. By faith, we trust that our combined gifts can make something happen to grow God’s kingdom here and now. In our commitment to give, we’re joining generations of faithful people . . .  like Abraham and Sarah who trusted that God would give them a son in their old age 

like Moses who trusted that God would lead the people to freedom

like the disciples who trusted that God would provide them hospitality as they worked to spread the good news

Like the founding members of our congregation who, 60 years ago, invested themselves in building a congregation to shape the faith of the generations that would come after them

Our campaign this year is “By faith we live, by faith we give.” I pray that we, together, we will join our faithful forefathers and mothers in investing in the future knowing that our gifts support the most important work that we will ever do. Let’s build a faithful future for the generations that come after us! Pastor Pam

Spring! After this frigid winter, who isn’t excited about the arrival of even slightly warmer temperatures, longer days, increased sunlight and all of the promises spring brings. Neighborhoods that appeared as ghost towns during the bleak winter suddenly come alive with people walking their dogs, pushing strollers, jogging, conversing, savoring the smell of fresh air. It seems that as the weather improves, so do attitudes and perceptions. We “see” evidence of new life all around us and in doing are filled with joy, thanksgiving and hope for all of God’s creation. In her book, Eyes of the Heart, Dr. Christine Valters Paintner explores photography as a Christian contemplative practice. As we open ourselves in prayer to God, so at the same time, we open ourselves to “receive” images and the world at a deeper level. Framing a moment in time invites us to stop, pause and appreciate the holy we may have otherwise missed. Dr. Valters Paintner writes, “The technology, speed, and busyness so prized by our Western culture foster a habit of blindness. We forget that there is a vast depth beneath the apparent surfaces of things. Art in general and photography in particular, helps to facilitate this awakening by granting us epiphanies through its transfiguration of the ordinary.” (p. 13) My deck is on the west side of my house and so I’ve received many, splendidly colored images of sunsets. But one in particular will always be my favorite. As I clicked away hoping to receive “just the right one” – one that would showcase the most vivid pinks and blues imaginable, I was the recipient of so much more. For when I looked at the photo, a cross of golden light appeared where none had been visible to the naked eye! Yes, a cross of golden light! (Now I’m certain that some of you could explain the technological reasons for this happening – the particular lens and filter, the angle of the light rays, etc., but please, don’t! To be a contemplative photographer is to marvel and behold what we see, both physically and spiritually – not to analyze and explain.) What a gift reminding me of God’s love and presence not only for me but, for the world. The psalmist wrote, “Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” (Psalm 119:18) My invitation to you is to find joy and meaning as you receive beautiful, photographic images and discover the holy within. Spend some time in prayer asking God to help you see with the eyes of the heart and then venture out and about. Let me know what you find. I’d be delighted if you would share your images with me either in an email or on Facebook. Also, please let me know if you’re interested in forming a contemplative photography group. The only requirements are an open mind and heart, a camera and purchasing a copy of the book previously mentioned. Peace, Pastor Candee

John Walsh-Stewardship

Candi and I joined Redeemer in the 1980s upon our move from Willmar, when our two boys were in elementary school. Redeemer has always been a welcoming and supportive congregation. We now have six marvelous grandkids who live nearby, allowing us to see them

Florida, taken our first cruise together, gone to Arizona and California. We finally took in Mount Rushmore. We spend time with our entire family at a resort up north each summer. In August, Candi and I will travel to Sweden to visit her cousins. When I think of Redeemer in the future, I expect that we will expand even more our service opportunities to address pressing needs in a way that demonstrates our love of Christ and His teachings.

regularly. When we married, I was serving in the US Army as a Russian Linguist. Candi and I had to suffer through one year in Monterey, California; then almost three years in West Germany, living in a small village of 200. Learned to ski in the Alps, climbed the tallest cathedral spire in the world and enjoyed traveling—especially to Vienna. Our older son was born in Germany. I am now retired and my career has spanned working for non-profits, running my own medical supply company and working for a local manufacturing company selling packaging equipment, which allowed me to travel throughout most of the US. Candi is retired from Regions Hospital, where she worked as a mental health nurse educator.

I was drawn to the church by its focus on community service. It is remarkable to think of the myriad of ways our members serve the community. It has been very humbling to see the spirit of God at work in our church. Many would be surprised at the high proportion of our members are active in one of the many ongoing service projects.

Spiritual Growth Opportunities for March and Beyond

Lenten Midweek Worship For the Father has chosen to give you the Kingdom During the season of Lent, we'll experience the Passion of Christ through the lens of John's Gospel to see just what it means that God has chosen to give the kingdom to us. On Wednesday evenings, we'll meet people who encountered Jesus on his way to the cross and see how they responded to this precious gift.

A new Sunday event, “Ruminating on the Text” will be available March 4 through March 18 between services. This will be an opportunity to further consider the text for the day. Led by a member of the congregation, we will read the text again and have an opportunity to comment. Copies of each text will be available in the library a week prior to discussion of that text so that participants have some time to consider it. So grab a coffee and donut, and head on in to the library to share your thoughts. Upcoming Events: April 4: Marilyn Sharpe on “Being the AAA Christians Kids Need Us to Be” April 11: A group perusal and discussion of the latest ELCA Social Statement on Women and Justice April 18 & 25: Charlie Brown leading a discussion on “The Shack” May 2: Spring Fling

Worship at 6:00 PM A Simple supper will be served starting at 5:00 PM. Services will be held on February 28, March 7, 14 & 21. No service on Wednesday, March 28.

Look for further details in the April Crossroads. On Ash Wednesday, cards with a nail were given out as a tangible reminder for the Lenten practice of reflection. If you did not receive one on Ash Wednesday, please feel free to take one from the basket and bring the nail back for the Good Friday service on March 30 at 7:00 PM.

What: The Hindu Mandir Temple of Minnesota is the new spiritual center for the Hindu populations of the Twin Cities, Minnesota and the nearby six states. Construction began October 2003 for the 43,000 sq. ft. $12million Mandir Temple in Maple Grove MN. Soma Yogadevotion offers the same faith-based class structure that other Yogadevotion classes do. Soma yoga is safe for “every body”. The classes are for all levels, and students can practice on a mat, chair, or standing at wall. Please bring a yoga mat and blanket to class. Cost is $56 for the session. Sign-up by bringing a check to the church office payable to Redeemer Lutheran with “Soma Yoga” written on the memo line. Questions? Contact Jane Schroeher at [email protected].

March Redeemer Book Club We would love to have you join us in the discussion of this wonderful novel set in London in the early 1900’s.

We will meet at 7:00PM on Tuesday, March 13 in the Library. Book: The Memory of Violets by Hazel Gaynor Leader: Sue Johnson In this unforgettable historical novel, you step into the world of Victorian London, where the wealthy citizens and poor flower girls exist side by side. This is the story of two long-lost sisters, whose lives take different paths, and the young woman who will be transformed by their experiences. Full of twists and surprises, it leads the caring and determined young woman into unexpected places, including the depths of her own heart. Page 6

Why Do You Give? In the last few days of 2017, a non-profit called my office asking about the impact of the new tax act. They heard some buzz that charitable contributions would no longer be deductible, and they were concerned their donors would cut back on giving. First off, I assured them charitable contributions are indeed still deductible under the new law. Then, I asked if they thought the tax deduction was the reason their donors supported them. With this question, the conversation quickly turned from anxiety about the tax law to a rich discussion about why people give. Do people really give solely for that tax deduction? I think not. I work with high-income households and people who would benefit greatly from the deduction. Yet they don’t give anything. The tax deduction alone doesn’t seem to motivate them to give. I also work with households of very modest means. They pay little or no tax and don’t really benefit from the deduction. Yet they’re very generous givers. Clearly both households are motivated by something else. Why do you give? Do you give to bring about change in the world? “I want the world to be a better place.” Do you give to have an impact? “I want to make a difference. Do you give out of compassion for others? “I want to help people change their life.” Do you give out of gratefulness for what you have been given? “I feel fortunate and want to give back something to others.” Do you give used items so they can be reused by someone else? “I feel good knowing others can benefit from things I no longer need.” Do you give to support the work of the organization? “I feel a sense of closeness to a community or group.” Do you give to feel like you’re part of a larger movement? “I feel good wearing my yellow wrist band or pink shoes and feel the strength in numbers when I see someone else wearing them too.” Do you give in response to a sudden need? “I feel compelled to help the victim of the hurricane.” Do you give out of a deep sense of faith? “I feel more connected to God when I give.” The tax deduction for charitable contributions may be a nice perk or added benefit, but the deduction alone is rarely or never the sole motivation for action. Ultimately, people give because it’s good for them. Because they want to help. Because they want to make a difference. Why do you give? Tom Bulger – Stewardship May you seek a journey of generous living that will deepen your relationship with Jesus. What a blessing it was to receive your gift! Thank you so much for your check for $760 from Worship on the Farm and your check for $325 from Holiday Fair, designated for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota. With all of the ways your benevolence dollars might be invested, we are so grateful you have shared them with those who use the services of LSS of MN. It’s because of you that LSS is able to provide:  a hot nutritious meal or a caring companion for an older adult  financial or family counseling for a returning veteran  a second chance for a homeless youth  independence for a person with a disability  recovering from natural disaster for a family trying to rebuild—and so much more! Thank you again for your important contribution. Your gift will provide new life and hope to the 1 in 65 Minnesotans who utilize the services of LSS of MN each year. The Rev. Kathryn A. Tiede, Director of Church Partnerships, LSS Page 8
