STUDENT DISCIPLESHIP CENTER ●

Why build student space at this time? For years the Carmel family has made plans for a Student Center, but we have opted to build discipleship space for our preschoolers and children first. The time has come to build a Student Center that provides a quality environment for student discipleship. Our desire is to create a unique space that can be identified as student space like our current children and preschool environment. Where do the students meet now on Sundays? How will the Student Center improve student discipleship? The students currently meet on Sunday mornings in the gym. They have a large group opening and then stay in the gym to have small group discussion by grade around tables. This location does not allow them to vary the curriculum for each grade level and is prone to be a noisy and distracting environment. The new student center will provide classrooms for each grade level that will be more conducive to learning and community. What is our strategy for discipling middle school and high school students? Why is this a priority? Carmel has made significant investments in the discipleship of our preschoolers and children. That investment includes around 100,000 sq ft of education space that we have effectively used to disciple our children in small group and large group space. Quality space is not only effective, but it sends a message to parents and children that we consider their spiritual growth a priority. For more information on our discipleship strategy for our Nearest (preschool through student ministry), view this video: https://vimeo.com/channels/996705 What kind of space will be in the Student Center? What will it be used for? The new space will have classroom space, community space, administrative space and a 400 seat auditorium. The classroom space will be used by the student ministry on Sundays and Wednesdays (grades 7-12). During the week, CCS will use the classrooms for grades 6-12. The auditorium will be used on Sundays and Wednesdays for middle school and high school FUEL (large group worship and teaching) while CCS will use it for high school chapel, fine arts productions and lunchroom space for middle school and high school. The community space is a large hallway area that will be used for a variety of student ministry and school functions. The administrative space will be shared for Student Ministry and CCS upper school offices. Once the building is built, will the facility’s operational expenses for the CCS space be paid by CCS? Or will the church pay for all expenses? Our practice for many years has been to allocate direct expenses to the schools (CCS and WEE School). In the budgeting process, expenses like cleaning, printers, facility maintenance and the like are expensed to the related school. Utilities for the CCS building and CCS modulars are all expensed to the school. Utilities for the main building

are not. We will continue to expense facility operational expenses in the same way and utilities for the Student Discipleship Center will be divided between church and school. WIll the new space allow WEE school children to have access (which they had in the past) to the media center and one of the gyms? An additional gym will allow WEE school to have access to the current gym for “rainy day” recreation. The library utilization will not be affected by additional space. Will we consider adding additional debt in order to build this building? Our current debt is $4.8 million. This debt will be paid off in mid-2019 through current giving to our regular operating budget. Our goal is to pledge all of the funds needed to build the building so that it is paid for by the end of 2018 and all debt will be retired a few months later. If we do not reach this goal, the elders will present a plan to the church which could include additional debt, and the church will have the opportunity to vote on that proposal. Carmel has always been a church that has “lived within its means,” and moving forward, we will maintain a conservative approach regarding debt. Do the funds we are raising include all money needed for things such as chairs, sound equipment, furnishings, etc? Yes, these are known as “soft costs” and are included in the total price. How can a non-CCS parent/Carmel member utilize his/her employer’s matching gift program to assist with his/her pledge? Unfortunately, unless your company will match funds given to a church, you will not be able to use matching gifts to contribute toward the Cultivate Challenge. The only exception is if you want your gift to be counted only toward Carmel Christian School's Cultivate goal; in this case you can direct your gift and matching funds to the Carmel Education Foundation. Is there a plan to remodel the existing building once the new building is complete? The Loft will be converted into classroom space, but otherwise, no additional remodeling is planned. Most of our facility has been remodeled over the past several years and is in good shape (e.g., restrooms, carpeting, worship center) What are we using the old gym space for? The existing gym is used Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings by our student ministry. Weekdays, it is used mainly by CCS. Will the exterior of the new building flow cohesively with the style of the current building’s exterior? The new building’s exterior will flow with the current building, but it also incorporates some more modern elements to make it fit with the style of the younger generation. Artist renderings of the outside of the building are available to be viewed on our web site: carmelbaptist.org/cultivate

Wednesday ministry space needs. This space along with our existing worship and educational space will allow us to achieve our goals of discipling our Nearest, reaching our Neighbors and planting new churches. Regarding CCS’s need, the School Board has developed a strategic plan which includes initiatives related to staff development, operations, communications and facility needs. The Student Discipleship Center will meet the needs of the school’s academic, fine arts and administrative space. The CCS strategic plan also includes plans for an upper school gym adjacent to the Student Discipleship Center and off-site ball fields for athletics. How will a gym and off-site athletic facilities be paid for? Since the use of the gym and off-site athletic facilities is primarily for CCS, these facilities will be paid for by CCS funding sources. How will gym construction be approved? Construction and related funding proposals will be vetted by the appropriate church leadership (committees, elders) and will be presented to the church for approval. If we are a Carmel family and a CCS family, are our gifts distributed to the church goal or the school goal? Will we be able to designate how we desire our gift to be applied? Families who are connected to both ministries need to clearly specify to which pledge goal your gift will be allocated. What the Lord leads you to give and who wish to allocate this gift is up to you. However, we want to transparently explain that if no designation is given as to where you would like these funds applied, your pledge will be evenly distributed 50% toward the church goal and 50% toward the school goal. We request that your pledge card and gifts be made payable through the Carmel Education Foundation (CEF) and given through the CCS Development Office.
