Teach your parents well? Curious Kids introduce ‘EARTH DAY’ By Dayna Harpster
O
rganizers of the Earth Day Network say that 196 countries will participate in teach-ins and other projects to mark this year’s observance of the event that began in the United States in 1970. They claim that more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day events annually, which makes it the largest civic observance in the world. No doubt there will be a big turnout in Washington D.C. that day for the March for Science, too. See more at www.earthday.org. The network’s goal is for every high school student to graduate “as an environmental and climate literate citizen, ready to take action and be a voice for change.” ‘Kids’ ahead of the curve There’s a cast of Southwest Florida kids who are years away from turning their hat tassels but already are climate literate, thanks to their involvement as Curious Kids. A new cast has been chosen, and they’re getting their feet wet as environmental ambassadors by introducing some favorite segments in the Curious Kids repertoire in a compilation titled It’s Earth Day. Curious Kids producer Rosemary Emery recently held auditions for a new cast – the third in the years since the series debuted. (Kids don’t stay 8 to 14 years old forever!) When It’s Earth Day airs on April 22 (which really is Earth Day), watch for segment introductions by Isabella, Emily, Tyler, Eric, Rowan, Layla, Jiya, Nellie, Ilijah, Nadia, Leah and Evan. Segments feature a trip to Cayo Costa, an experience with horseshoe crabs and an introduction to geocaching. They meet some special kids whose therapy involves riding horses, and other special-needs kids who play in a local baseball program. n

Watch WGCU HDTV Frontline: The Fish on My Plate Tuesday, April 25 @ 10 pm

W
hat happens when somebody spends a year eating only fish? Frontline promises to have the answer on Tuesday, April 25 in a show titled The Fish on My Plate. The answer depends quite a bit on the health of the fish that a person is eating – something WGCU has been concerned with on behalf of local diners for years. The eater we meet on Frontline is journalist and writer Paul Greenberg, who apparently consumed seafood from Norway to Peru, farm to wild, in his quest to investigate the health of the ocean and his own wellbeing. This raises a number of questions that pre-show publicity has not answered. What do they mean by “only fish”? No fruits, vegetables or grains? Did he take vitamins? We’ll all have to tune in and see. In the meantime, WGCU has been pondering this question of seafood health – and sustainability – through documentaries, news stories and a blog. Our series on Sustainable Seafood includes two TV documentaries about local seafood – Pink Gold Rush debuted in 2014 and Mullet: A Tale of Two Fish in 2016. The TV documentaries are the most visible results of this focus, but the effort has included radio reporting, magazine stories and a healthy helping of online content from local reporters as well as national. A taste of what you’ll find there: Gulf Coast Live radio host Julie Glenn covered some not-so-good news about local shrimp and stone crab on the air in March. Hauls of both were poor during the winter, but according to a Gulf Coast Live segment on March 6, there were signs of an uptick in the offing. And no discussion of local marine health would be complete without a check-in about algal blooms, which Richard P. Stumpf, an oceanographer with NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, talked about on the show on March 13. A return to mullet locally has stepped in where some other deficits exist in seafood harvest, a practice that seems to be matched in the northeast with a member of the shark family found for years in British fish-n-chips and French soups and stews. Allison Aubrey reported on PBS NewsHour earlier this year that some fishermen are banking on the dogfish – see the story online for a clue to the name – to find its way onto local plates. Like the rest of the U.S. seafood harvest, most of the dogfish
catch, in this case 99 percent, is imported to other countries. With American appetites moving more toward fresh and local, Cape Cod fishers are hoping the odd-looking dogfish catches on here. Americans also have turned up their collective noses at the 20 million tons of wild seafood – a fourth of the world’s commercially caught fish – that ends up being used as fishmeal for aquaculture and other purposes. Comprising anchovy, menhaden, herring and other “trash fish,” fishmeal is actually just fine for “direct human consumption,” or “food grade” in industry lingo. PBS NewsHour reported this story in January. Meanwhile, further enticement to eat local seafood is clear in a PBS NewsHour report of slave labor in the industry in Thailand. It’s a disturbing story. Meanwhile, some U.S. entrepreneurs have turned to aquaculture to fill the gap between what’s commercially available

Mainlanders never quite leave their native Puerto Rico

icardo Rolon is 44 and has lived in Florida since he was 13 years old. He still thinks in Spanish, although he overwhelmingly uses English in his daily life. And no matter what language he is thinking or speaking in, the answer to “Where are you from?” is automatic. He could say Cape Coral, now, or Boca Raton, where he lived for years, or even Palm Springs, Calif., where he worked for years before moving to Southwest Florida. But the answer is always “Puerto Rico.”

He visits often, still, and has plenty of memories of growing up closer to the Earth than is possible on the “mainland.” He understands why the new Nature documentary airing in April is called Viva Puerto Rico. “Two things stand out when I think about Puerto Rico,” he said. “The island and beach lifestyle – because anywhere you are, you aren’t far from the beach. And music, which we called musica folklorica,” or traditional folk music. Rolon is a photographer, so it’s not surprising that to him,
images have particular power. A photo he took of a beach just a few years ago “brings me back to when I was 10 years old,” he said, “and riding my bike with my friends.” “I grew up about a mile and a half from the beach. Seeing it reminds me of the grainy sand on your feet and the breeze you feel in the shade. No matter how hot it gets, there’s always a breeze on the island.” The youngest of three boys, Rolon climbed rocks and swam in a pool fed by a waterfall at La Mina Falls in El Yunque National Forest – the same place he visited a few years ago on an assignment and photographed some students from Florida Gulf Coast University and Florida SouthWestern State College. Sophia Figueroa of Lehigh has
visited the rainforest as well, on summer trips to see her grandmother in Morovis, Puerto Rico, in the more mountainous center of the island. She has been ziplining at a park nearby and swimming in a river. And she said it’s never quiet at night: The noise of cars and commerce she is used to hearing is replaced with the sounds of nature – namely birds. Sophia visits not far from where her grandfather, Edgardo “Pete” Perez, lived until he was 16 years old and moved with a brother to the mainland. From a farming family, Perez – “Pito” to nearly everyone – grew up without running water or electricity. It was hard, but beautiful, he said. In addition to the crops his family grew on their acre of land, there was no shortage of edible, wild food, including yucca,
malanga, breadfruit and yautia. Perez’s mother relied on wild edibles for more than that. “Every time we got sick, my mom went outside and gathered a bunch of plants and made tea,” he said. At 8 years old, Perez was already working, picking coffee after school hours. When the chance to come to the mainland came, he jumped on it, landing first in New York, where he worked picking cauliflower, which was “stinky,” he said. After working in a winery in New York, he moved to Florida for factory work and eventually retired from the Purina company. The time is now to show your support for public media Once again, federal funding for the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting is being threatened. The
annual $1.35 per citizen foundational appropriation that provides Southwest Florida families with five streams of quality educational, informational and entertainment television programming and three streams of news and
information, alternative and classical music radio programming is at risk.
Legislation — House Bills 726 and 727, which would effectively defund public broadcasting — has been introduced in Congress and threatens to dismantle a 50-year-old public-private partnership that provides a free window-to-theworld to every household with a television and individual with a radio or internet access.
Unfortunately, Congressman Francis Rooney, representing Florida’s
19th Congressional District, which stretches from Boca Grande to Marco Island, has signed on as a co-sponsor of the legislation to end federal
funding for public broadcasting. I believe Congressman Rooney can be
convinced that federal support for public broadcasting is a worthwhile and
valuable investment in the nation’s information and education infrastructure. The $445 million appropriation for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
represents 1/100th of 1 percent of the $4 trillion federal budget! Eliminating it would have virtually no effect on the federal deficit and would deprive
many rural communities of their only communications lifeline and millions of children of the only preschool classroom they will ever know.
All of your elected representatives need to know how you feel about
funding for public broadcasting. However, it is critical that Congressman
Rooney hears your thoughts on this issue now — by phone, by letter to his
local district offices or by email. The Congressman’s contact information is available on his website at https://francisrooney.house.gov/contact/.

In New York’s Hudson Valley, Jean Claude Frajmund has launched an operation of what look like multiple above-ground kiddie pools, according to a report by NPR. At Eco Shrimp Garden, Frajmund harvests Pacific white shrimp in tanks. It’s not “pink gold,” though. Southwest Florida struggles to find its own answers to why the United States imports 90 percent of its seafood. According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, what Americans eat comes mainly from China, Thailand, 20 Expressions April 2017
Canada, Indonesia, Vietnam and Ecuador. Oddly, one of the top imported products is shrimp. It’s clear the American appetite for seafood is going strong. NOAA numbers show that people in this country eat about 14.5 pounds per year per person, which in 2013 (the latest year for which statistics are available) that worked out to 4.6 billion pounds. Ways of leveraging that fondness will continue to be a theme of WGCU’s Sustainable Seafood series. Follow that cat! Nature Cat seems to know that April brings something special: Earth Month! Each day, the mildmannered housecat known as Fred bides his time until the family is gone, and then heads out to the backyard to become Nature Cat, “explorer extraordinaire.”
Voiced by former Saturday Night Live cast member Taran Killam, Fred delights kids 3 to 8 with his adventures in natural science – in the natural world. He’s joined by current SNL players Kate McKinnon as Squeeks the mouse and Bobby Moynihan as Hal the dog.
