Current Medicinal Chemistry Research in India: Progress and Opportunities

O

ver the past decade, medicinal chemistry research in India has made important contributions to further the knowledge of the field. The funding ecosystem has improved significantly with Indian Government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and international charities investing resources for drug discovery and clinical research. To celebrate research highlights that are the results of these positive developments, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters have partnered to publish a joint virtual issue on Medicinal Chemistry in India. Dr. Vishwakarma, Director of the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Jammu, India, served as Guest Editor for this virtual issue, selecting 10 articles from Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters that were published between 2015 and 2016, authored by groups primarily working in India in diverse areas of medicinal chemistry. These selected original research articles cover a range of medicinal chemistry topics, including infectious diseases, oncology, inflammation, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cardiac and neglected diseases (malaria, filariasis, and leishmaniasis) highlighting the broad spectrum of research in India. Both academic and industrial laboratories are fairly represented. All published articles were adjudicated by the Editorial groups Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters and have undergone rigorous peer-review against the high standard required for publication in these two journals. The virtual issue can be viewed at: http://pubs.acs.org/page/ vi/medchemindia. Dr. Vishwakarma contributed a detailed editorial on this topic, providing an outline of the medicinal chemistry research landscape in India over the past several decades and highlighting each of the selected articles. His editorial can be read in the March issue of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters (DOI: 10.1021/acsmedchemlett.7b00064). In closing, we thank all our authors in India who contributed their work to our journal. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for drug discovery research in India.
