TEACHING & DIALOGUE

This week’s sermon points to deepening your relationship with Jesus. The gospel is not what “gets you in”, but rather it is the path you walk every day of the Christian life. To deepen your relationship with Jesus is to dive deeper into the gospel.

Have someone read 2 Timothy 4:1-4 out loud. Paul charges Timothy in these verses to keep it simple and teach God’s word. It sounds easy, doesn’t it? God’s word and the gospel of Jesus Christ are consistent and never changing. Our world tends to attempt to drag us away from the gospel. Part of equipping Timothy and us is an increased awareness of this dichotomy. 1. What is one thing that stuck out to you from the sermon this weekend? This could be a point Pastor Joby made, a lyric from one of the worship songs, or something that landed on you in a new way… (Answer as you feel led...) 2. Why does Paul remind Timothy to preach the word? Why is it important for Timothy to preach God’s word versus his own opinion? (Paul is reminding Timothy that he is called to preach the Word of God, which is God breathed, gospelcentered truth, as opposed to his own opinion, It frees us to share the Good News, and not have to try to give good advice.) Have someone read 1 Corinthians 15:1-6 out loud. 3. What is Paul reminding us about the Gospel in this passage? (It’s of first importance. Paul received and is now delivering; doesn’t happen too, but through. Christ died for our sins, buried, resurrected, and the resurrected Jesus was seen by many. The gospel saves you, you then live by it and are sanctified through it.) 4. These verses show the simplicity, the depth and the certainty of the Gospel. Do you struggle with believing in, or sharing with others, any of these three elements? How so? (The gospel is not just merely what “gets in you”, but rather it is the path you are to walk every day of the Christian life. The gospel not only makes us right with God through justification, but it also gives us the freedom to delight in God through sanctification.)

The Church of Eleven22 offers an interactive workshop that teaches you to identify your testimony, clearly present the gospel, and other practical ways to intentionally live out the Great Commission as taught in Matthew 28. Check out the next “Share Your Faith” class on at coe22.com/events on April 6th from 8:30am – 12pm.

This weekend, Pastor Joby shared a diagram that illustrates our view of God’s holiness increasing as our view of our own sin increases, portraying a gospel-centered life.

1. Does considering God’s holiness move you to fear or to worship? How do you feel about seeing the depths of your brokenness? (The top line of the diagram doesn’t mean that God’s holiness is growing, it means that your awareness of His holiness is growing. Likewise, the bottom line doesn’t mean that you are becoming more sinful, it means that you are realizing more and more just how much you need Jesus as He is the ONE who fills that gap. As Tim Keller puts it, “The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed than we ever dared believed, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.”)

2. Which do you struggle with more? Not fully recognizing God’s holiness, and therefore trying to perform up to His holiness, or not fully recognizing our own sin, and therefore pretending that we have it all together. (Examples of performing (legalistic thoughts of): job, family, theology, intellect, mercy, schedule, flexibility, or financial. Examples of pretending: Defending, faking, hiding, exaggerating own righteousness, blaming, and downplaying.)

ACTION STEP

Growing in the gospel means seeing more of God’s holiness and more your own sin. This week, we challenge you to commit to praying for God to increase your awareness of His holiness and your awareness of your own sinfulness. Because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, there is no need to fear seeing God as He really is or seeing how broken you really are because your hope is not in your own works but in Jesus – the perfect Redeemer.

MEMORY VERSE:

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus. - 2 Timothy 2:1
