DIGGING DEEPER 1. Read John 9:1-5. In these verses, how do the disciples react to the blind man? What was Jesus’ response to their question? a. Theologian F.F. In His answer to the disciples, what does Jesus say about His purpose in coming? Does this only apply to the blind man, or does it also have application to us? If so, in what way? 2. Read John 9:6-12. In these verses, Jesus restores the man’s sight. When Jesus heals someone, does He always use the same method? Discuss other healings by Jesus and the methods He used. What does this tell us about Jesus and His abilities? a. What confusion amongst the people occurred after Jesus healed the blind man. What, do you believe, caused the confusion?

Discuss the events of these passages. What confession did the Pharisees seek from the man? What was the primary concern of the Pharisees regarding the healing of the blind man? a. When asked by the Pharisees, how did the man now describe Jesus? What is the definition of a prophet? Do you believe that the man could fully see who Jesus is at this point? b. Why did the man’s parents not answer the Pharisees’ questions? What would have been the result of their confession of how their son was healed? What was their son’s consequence as a result of his statements? c. Discuss the man’s statement in verse 25. How can we share the witness this man gave in terms of our own salvation i.e. can we describe our own salvation in the same way? d. Read Acts 26:17-19. Based on these verses, do you believe that the blindness experienced by the man in John 9 is a metaphor for something else? Discuss this metaphor. 4. Read John 9:35-41. After speaking with Jesus, who does the man now say Jesus is? What changed his view of who Jesus is? What was the man’s response once he believed? What should our response be? a. Discuss Jesus’ statement in verse 39 and his response to the Pharisees in verse 41. What do these statements say about belief versus unbelief? b. Can you use what you have learned in John 9 to speak to others about the impact of spiritual blindness? In what way would you use this passage to witness to others?
