Darkness disrupts ‘midnight sun’ game By The Associated Press ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A summertime sports tradition in the land of the midnight sun was foiled early SPORTS Wednesday NOTEBOOK morning by an unlikely foe: darkness. The 111th annual Midnight Sun Baseball Game in Fairbanks, Alaska, was called at 1:30 a.m. because players had trouble seeing after sunset. Storm clouds added to the darkness. “Hitters were coming back to the dugout saying they were having a really difficult time. We don’t want to get anybody hurt. It was pretty dark,” said John Lohrke, the president and the interim general manager of the Fairbanks team, the Alaska Goldpanners. The annual game is played on the solstice, when there is more light than any other day. In Fairbanks, that means 21 hours and 49 minutes of sunlight. The sun sets at 12:48 a.m. and rises at 2:59 a.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Metzger said. Storm clouds that brought rain before the game started Tuesday evening made it even darker than normal. First pitch for the midnight sun game was 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Goldpanners were leading the Kenai Peninsula Oilers 8-0 at the top the seventh inning, about 1 a.m. Arizona moves on in CWS OMAHA, Neb. — JC Cloney pitched seven strong innings to lead Arizona to a 3-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in an elimination game Wednesday night, sending the Wildcats to the Bracket 1 final against Arizona. Cloney allowed just five singles and became the eighth straight Arizona starter to go at least seven innings at TD Ameritrade Park since the 2012 national championship season. Chile advances to final CHICAGO — When Chile saw an opening, it pounced. When its defense broke down, Claudio Bravo was there. When the rain stopped, it finished the job. Just another meticulous performance for Chile in Copa America. Charles Aranguiz and Jose Pedro Feunzalida scored in the first half, and defending champion Chile returned to the final with a soggy 2-0 victory over Colombia on Wednesday night. Next up is a match with Argentina in Sunday night’s final. NHL owners agree to Vegas LAS VEGAS — The NHL is making a big bet on Las Vegas. The league will expand to Las Vegas for the 2017-18 season after awarding its 31st franchise to billionaire businessman Bill Foley. Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the decision after the league’s board of governors met on a 109-degree day and unanimously voted to put an ice hockey team in the Mojave Desert’s gambling mecca. Foley will pay $500 million to the NHL’s other owners as an expansion fee. The new team will play in T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million building that opened just off the Las Vegas Strip in April. Bettman also announced that an expansion bid from Quebec City was “deferred” indefinitely, allowing Las Vegas to enter the league alone in the Pacific Division. The league’s alignment and playoff format won’t change.
