Character Stories  Lesson 4

David and Goliath Bible Verse David answered: “You’ve come out to fight me with a sword and a spear and a dagger. But I’ve come out to fight you in the name of the Lord All-Powerful. Today the Lord will help me defeat you.” (1 Samuel 17:45-46)

Teacher Enrichment This is the fourth lesson in the Character Stories series which encounters characters from both the Old and New Testament; some very well-known and others you may have never “met.” Each week will explore the actions, motivations and experiences of a character and determine what that person’s story teaches us about how God wants us to live. The account of David and Goliath is one of most popular stories from the Bible. It is a lesson of courage, faith, and overcoming what seems impossible. David is the youngest of eight brothers. His older brothers are soldiers in the Israelite army, but David is a simple shepherd. He’s only finds himself on the battlefield because he brings food to his brothers. Yet it is he who has the courage to fight and defeat Goliath; the biggest, strongest, most feared solider in all of the Philistine army. And he uses only a stone and a slingshot to do it. The little guy triumphs over the big, scary giant. But David didn’t win because he was a good shot. He won because he asked God to help him and he knew God is more powerful than anything and anyone. David wasn’t scared to fight Goliath because his bravery rested in God’s power. Today we may not fight 9 foot tall men with armor and a sword, but we all face giants. A giant is something that seems too big for us to handle by ourselves. When we are worried by or overwhelmed by “giants,” David teaches us to turn to God for courage, protection and power. This lesson will help children identify the “giants” in their lives and teach them that trusting God’s power can provide bravery when they feel scared or overwhelmed.

Before Class Begins  Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival.  Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival.  Check that you have supplies for this lesson: - Arrival Activity, David and Goliath coloring page – 1 per child - Stones – 1 per child - Sharpies - Bravery Bible Verses Handout – 1 per child - David Bible Character Profile – 1 per child  Place an arrival activity at each place on the table.

with a sticker to place in today’s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to complete David and Goliath coloring page. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships.

Children’s Worship Character Stories  Lesson 4

11:05. Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children’s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 105. Encourage children to participate in Children’s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children’s Worship leader as needed. During Children’s Worship there will be a short, small group breakout. Children will identify and write their “giants” (something that seems too big for them to handle by themselves) on post-it notes. The Children’s Worship leader will provide direction and you will assist children with ideas and writing. The post-it notes will be placed on a large poster of Goliath. At the conclusion of Children’s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 105.

The Lesson SUPPLIES: Stones, Bravery Bible Verses handout, Bibles, sharpies  Note that Children’s Worship will be longer than usual and include a short, small

group activity (see instructions above under Children’s Worship). The stone craft will also be introduced in Children’s Worship. ASK: Today we met a man named David who defeated a giant named Goliath. What did David use to defeat Goliath? (A stone) SAY: David used a stone to defeat Goliath, but it was God’s power that helped David be brave and face the giant Goliath. When we face something that seems big and scary, God can help us be brave and face our “giant.” You each wrote some things down during Children’s Worship.

Character Stories  Lesson 4

SAY: Now, each of you will get your own stone to help you remember to ask God for bravery. You can decorate your stone however you choose. I’m also giving you a Bravery Bible Verses handout that lists Bible verses about courage and bravery. You can look up the verses, see if you like them, and then write the scripture reference on your stone. (For example Deuteronomy 31:6) I’m also going to write some words on the white board that you could use. (Write some of the words below on the white board so children can reference them for spelling)  Show children the sample craft.  Give each child a stone and provide sharpies for decorating.  Place Bibles on the tables.  Provide each child with a Bravery Bible Verses handout.  Assist children with spelling and decorating ideas. - God - God is Bigger - Brave - David - Giant - Goliath - Bravery - Be Brave - Trust God

Closing SUPPLIES: David Bible Character Profile  Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the

children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for helping us to be brave! Amen  If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their David and Goliath coloring page if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation Character Stories  Lesson 4

between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom!  Send each child home with a David Bible Character Profile. Remind children and parents this worksheet can be completed at home as a family.
